For those of you that live where the weather turns frigid and frost bite is a real danger, these boots are for you! I've spent extended time outside is temperatures well below freezing and my feet stayed toasty warm in my Mukluk boots. You can order online, but it is well worth your time if you get near Minnesota to venture to the quaint northern town of Ely and get fitted for the perfect pair of boots. I spent a week chaperoning middle schoolers in -20 degree cold in northern Minnesota and my Steger Mukluks saw me through. My eyelashes were frozen, but my feet were warm and comfy in my "Arctic" Mukluk boots. You have perhaps seen "Mukluk" brands at some chain department stores and that's fine, but for true hardcore outdoor boots Steger Mukluk is the place to visit. read more

My mukluks are very warm, not much support. After a few years, the soles stared to decompose. They are becoming like chewing gum. Steger support said they can't resole them. I talked to people at Marshall Hardware about trying to recoat them, they said others have come in with the same problem. Someone reported this on Redit. I really do love my Steger Mukluks. They are light and very warm. The main drawback, and it's pretty bad I think, is that the soles get all gummy and gross. I'm on my 3rd pair of boots, plus have had the moccasins. All did this. The company is zero help. They don't fix or replace. The last 2 pair started getting gummy right away, which is so sad. I've had my Mukluks for a very long time (10+ years). I have loved them. They are by far the warmest boots I've ever owned. Mine are suede and come up to my knee, and I can never go back to lower boots. With my long jacket, the only part of my leg left exposed to the Michigan cold is my knees. Love love love. OK. That said, after about 7 years, the bottoms of the boots disintegrated. They turned to a mushy, sticky liquid, getting stuck to my hardwood floor, as well as other boots in my closet. As far as I can tell, there is not an easy fix. The local shoe repair shop won't touch them with a ten foot pole. It's a real shame. The uppers are in great condition, as well as the felt bootie inside. I would've liked to continue to care for and wear these boots for 10 more years. In fact, when you buy them, there were instructions about how to care for the boots to "last a lifetime." I wrote to Mukluk, and this is a problem they know about. (Google it.) I reviewed the boots accordingly on their website (not a bad review -- but not a 5* review -- just to let ppl know). The review was never posted to their site. If this is a problem they know about, it's a shame that they haven't made moves to resolve it. Beyond that, it's a shame that they swept my comment under the rug. My sister and I both bought boots at the same time, and had I had a good interaction with customer service regarding the problem, I may have purchased another pair. read more

Ok, so I went back to Steger's upon the owner's recommendation (Patty contacted me via Yelp) and changed my chocolate mukluks to the Artic, which she recommended. She suspected that I wasn't counseled correctly on my initial purchase, hence, the cold feet. Upon returning, they took back my older mukluks and exchanged them without any problem. I was counseled to get the reflective liners to help with warmth (and to increase to a double wide size). So, 4 stars for the great customer service. I'll see how they do at my next sled dog race... I have worn Steger's mukluks nearly all of my life and finally stepped foot in store last weekend. Selection of the mukluks were a little disappointing but I will chalk this down to my pair of mukluks being over 30 years old and a lot has changed since then! I bought my own pair and a matching set for my partner for Christmas...I can't wait! I wish you could customize the boots because I loved the style of furred ones but didn't want the fur. (I settled for a plain pair but in the end I know I will be happy with them) The store itself is beautiful. Besides the boot fitting area and display (which is spacious) the rest of the store felt cramped. (They are dog friendly! I bought my wife a pair of regular Mukluks and a pair of Mukluk Extremes for myself. They are very warm when they are dry. Good for dry fall hunting and extremely cold snow. When there is wet snow, you will get wet. (Even with waterproofing). Just like wearing slippers at home with no heal or support. If you are walking up slight hills that are slippery due to leaves or snow, you will fall!!!!! If you wear them any where near salt, it will harden and discolor the leather. Keep them away from sharp objects, my 8 y/o son stepped in my foot during hockey and sliced one boot. Called company and they would not suggest any means of patching it and would not tell me how to recoat the black outer coating. If you are using them for show, get a pair. If you are a hunter, you will only use them for a portion of the season. Aside from all the negative, they are very light and easy to pack. I just think they should be about 40% less considering. Finally ventured to Ely from Duluth to try on Steger mukluks (well, and bring the kids to the bear center and just enjoy cute Ely- go to Insala for dinner!). Buying online just is way too difficult with uncertainty to how they'll fit and shipping costs etc, and since I tried on different boots in the store, glad to share my results. The all moose hide ones (the quetico talls and the calf ones-klondike) were too big, I had to size my 7.5s down to a 7. But the artic and the canvas north country were better as 8s. Cray. They were a little snug on the sides of my feet but the saleswoman assures me they would stretch sideways with wear. I'm debating what to buy but luckily we are staying the night with our crazy kids and I'm drinking wine right now, so who knows What tomorrow will bring. I'm leaving to the black and camel north country but the hubs likes the looks of the white arctic with the ribbon. The lacing is cute, but it does mean you need to spend time lacing them. I have become not just a mukluk fan, but a mukluk evangelist. I have lived in Minnesota/North Dakota my entire life. Needless to say, I've tried every winter boot on offer. Here's the run down. Sorels: expensive, clunky as hell, do not keep feet warm at minus 20, despite claims, impossible to drive in, build quality issues... Uggs: waaaay overpriced, make feet STINK, not good to drive in, look like soririty girl in them, don't keep feet warm at minus 20 despite claims to contrary due to the fact that they make your feet sweat too much. Kamik: klunky, build quality issues, can't drive in em and again with the not being warm enough... You get the idea. And then I found Steger Mukluks. They work because they allow blood to continue to circulate in your feet because of the thin sole. This makes for an awesome driving shoe. I can actually drive to and from work in minus....well the coldest temps Minnesota can throw at me and me feet are not cold at all. They are expensive, a base pair will set you back $160 and they go up to $270 for the super tall fashion models, which is about the same for a pair of Uggs, but I've had mine for three winters and I wear them every day that snow is on the ground and they still look great. I may have to replace the liner this year, but that's very cheap. I've bought a pair of these for everyone else in my family and am considering a second pair in a different color for myself. I have had to completely change the way I dress in the winter for my mukluk lifestyle. You needn't necessarily do this, but it makes life fun. I wear wool tights and skirts now in cold weather with my mukluks and I'm actually warmer, and I think, more fashionable than I did when I wore jeans tucked into other kinds of boots or worse, yet, had to change into shoes when I got to work. Who needs that hassle? The only drawback to these as footwear is that they don't have a tremendous amount of support. So don't plan on wearing them to the mall you will kill your feet. However, I've hiked miles in the woods in them, which is afterall, what they are designed for and my feet were fine. Edit: After five winters my first pair developed a hole in the toe. I got it patched and I still wear them, but I bought a second pair just because I wanted a different color. I only wear them when there is snow on the ground (I got a pair of Sven waterproof sheepskin clog boots for winter days where there is no snow or it is too sloppy for my mukluks) which makes a difference to the life of the boot. This second pair has been through three winters now with almost no wear. I also got a wider size and got a second liner for those super cold days, which was a real bonus during the Polar Vortex winter of 2013. read more

I can't even handle how much perfection oozes from these boots. I've had them for SEVEN years now and they still look amazing, feel amazing and keep my feet amazingly warm. They are so comfortable that I wear them around the house, but most importantly, they are SO WARM. My aunt and uncle in Two Harbors, MN and my aunt and uncle in Zumbrota, MN have been telling me about how great these boots are for a while now. I'm in Two Harbors every once in a while to visit, and finally found time to make the drive to Ely at the end of September (2013). I am so glad I did. I had been wanting a really good pair of boots. Wisconsin winters are cold. Steger has a huge selection meeting different needs. After browsing the website a few times, I thought I had settled on the Traditional Mukluks. All I had to do was try them on... I walked into the store and was greeted by the friendly sales representative. Just a friendly hello. Not following me around, not completely ignoring me. I wandered the store for a while and, when I was ready, asked for assistance picking out my boots. The sales representative asked me a bunch of questions about what I was planning for the boots and I realized the Traditionals weren't for me. I wanted the Arctics. A little thicker, a lot warmer, oh and hey they come with wool inserts and liners and the snow repellant. She showed me how to tie them correctly, let me know how to wear them the first few days, and told me the best way to store them. It's the middle of February now. It hasn't gotten as cold here in Milwaukee as it does in Northern Minnesota but, hey. -40F is nothing to shrug off. I am so glad I had my Mukluks. I can wear them all day and they keep my feet warm and my toes from getting cold and my feet don't get *too* warm. I'm not ringing out my socks when I get these boots off. That's gross. I'm sorry for that visual. High quality, Hand made in the US boots for a decent price. I mean, they're not cheap. But my aunts and uncles have had their boots for over 10 years and they are still going strong. I'm willing to bet these are durable and comfortable and warm enough to be worth the price. Phenomenal boots. Wouldn't wear anything else ever again in the winter. Super light, great for driving, and feet stay WARM. No, it's not some sort of magic material. It's just moose hide and wool liners. Your feet stay warm because they're f-l-e-x-i-b-l-e, which means that your feet keep circulating blood, thus keeping them warm. Yes, the materials are superior, but the constant flexing of the foot really helps to keep you warm. And I agree with Caitlin, you do feel like a sprite the first time you run around in them. My hubby bought me a pair for Christmas this year and I am in love with them. He bought me the "Arctic with Ribbon" in a regular width size 9. I typically wear an 8.5 shoe but when I first tried on the boots, I was quite worried that they weren't going to fit because I was having a hard time getting them on. After I finally pulled them on and walked around in them for about ten minutes, they fit great and I haven't had a problem getting them on since. I would recommend sizing up if you're wanting to wear a thick sock in them also as they fit snug - although I don't think you'd need a thick sock because the wool felt liner is plenty warm. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada and it is -35 out today and I've been out and about all day and my feet have not been cold at all. My only complaint is that the inside of the left boot feels a little off, almost like I'm wearing a right foot on my left, although I'm sure it'll feel better as I wear them more. I definitely recommend this brand over Laurentian Chief or Manitobah Mukluk brands - and I like the look of the Steger brand better too! read more

Warm, indeed! My first pair held up well over a Minneapolis winter. I literally pranced the first time I took them to the woods; it was the most natural feeling walk I've ever had- like a fucking woodland sprite. One caveat, I bought them at Steger's in Ely. I hate cold toes in the winter. Even worse, I hate spending a lot of money on boots that promise to keep my toes warm but don't. I found Steger Mukluks on the internet. Patti Steger is the founder of this company. She makes mukluks for men and women who travel to really, really cold places, so I thought to myself, "Ok, here's a person who will know how to keep my toes warm." Got my mukluks the other day. I bought the traditional style in black leather and canvas. I thought they'd be heavy and clunky -- mukluks is kind of a clunky word -- but they are surprisingly lightweight. I wore them around town yesterday and kept telling the teenager, "I can't believe how warm my feet are!" They make lots of different styles/colors, and shipping is quite fast, considering that they are coming from northern Minnesota. Anyway, if you want really warm boots that are 100% American-made, check out mukluks.com. The prices are not cheap, but I've probably spent a lot more than $150 over the last 25 years on boots that soon went into the Goodwill pile. read more

I adore my mukluks - but the soles have turned into a mushy, gooey, sticky mess. I see that other people have had the same issue, and I have a friend who has the same complaint. I contacted the company and they acknowledged the "inconvenience", offered some products to try, and said,"We have tried numerous ways to re-sole our boots, but unfortunately have not been successful.". Seriously. You would think that after all these years, and many people having the same problem, that they would come up with a sole that doesn't not disintegrate or could be re-soled - especially if you are spending between $200-$300 a pair. The best. I ordered my boots 6 weeks ago and they were still back ordered for another week or so. We went to the store just to check it out because we happened to be in Ely, and I told the 2 gals about my situation and one of them said "hang on a sec" and ran to the back. She came out with a men's size 8 which is equivalent to the women's size that I ordered. They fit perfectly!! Jenny (I think that was her name) was so knowledgeable and helpful, showed me how to lace them up and gave me lots of tips. We (my husband and I) are about to buy new Steger mukluks. The soles of our old Steger Mukluks are finally dissolving entirely after 15 years! That means for 15 years they have kept our feet warm and super comfortable throughout the winters. The only sad thing is that the uppers are still in excellent condition and we would love to reuse or recycle the moose hide... I never write reviews but a product this good demands my time. I live in the interior of Alaska so it's fair to say not many people see the temps I do for the duration I do. I've worn LaCrosse, Cabela's, Irish Setters, bunny boots and so on, I'm sure you get the point. There is no boot out there that provides warmth with the light weight and flexibility as Steger. If you've ever worn bunny boots then you know the ability to submerge you feet in glacier water, empty them out and put your feet back in the boots and have them be warm is nothing short of a miracle not to mention a foot saver... literally!! However, those situations are few and far between. I just bought my first pair of Mukluks and have worn them a few times. Yes they are comfortable, I mean they feel like a dam pair of slippers. They are nice to run to the store in and what not but how many people really put them to the test? In November we had a cold snap so I decided to try them out. I went out snow shoeing at -30. I hiked 4 miles while predator hunting and the boots performed far beyond my expectations. My feet were warm but not wet from perspiration and I didn't even have any extra insoles in them. Of course I bought the Arctic boots being they are rated for the coldest temps. I paid $190 for them and they're worth every penny. I usually wear a 9-9.5 so I ordered a 10W but it was way too small. They were happy to send me a new pair and recommended an 11WW so I would have room for extra insoles. They were right and it was the perfect size. I broke them in enough to put the first insole in and will add a second when I have room. I can't say enough about these boots. The only advise I have is to stay off the rocks with them, I don't consider this a negative because they obviously aren't made for that but it's good to know none the less. I saw these fringed moccasins on their website and fell in love with them. When I visited Eli this was one of the first shops I visited. Luckily when I tried them on, they fit like a glove. It rained some while in Ely last may 2018, but my moccasins never stained. I know these will last me to my last days and them some. The shop people were very helpful and the shop its self is a dandy. A few minutes ago, I had the worst retail experience of my 66 years. Receiving a pair of Kamuks as a gift for Christmas, I needed to up-size and get an extra wide to have a good fit. I was absolutely flabergasted when the Manager, Kim, I think, told me that mine were a discontinued style and it was the company policy not to exchange or make the purchase good for the customer. I offered to pay an upgrade charge for a new model but she was steadfast in her anti-customer position. So now I am stuck with a pair of boots that do not fit and I am angrier than hell. I will spend the next week or so writing as many bad reviews of the Steger Mukluk Company as I can to provide a safety valve for my frustration and disappointment. LL. I purchased my Steger Mukluks Quetico 3 years ago. This is my 3rd winter wearing them. Last winter the long strap on one of the boots broke, I called Stegar and they sent me a replacement piece but I still had to take them to a leather shop to get fixed and pay for the repair. Yesterday 12/22/13 the small loop that holds the long strap broke. I live in Montana and this is the time of year I need them and once again they are in the leather shop and costing me more money to get them fixed. Not happy with the craftsmanship of the product. I purchased three pair of mukluks from Steger. Two held up very well, but on one pair the soles turned to goo. They were all stored under the same conditions. I bought the mukluks with ribbon as a Christmas gift for my mother, who lives in Fairbanks. While she seems to really like the boots, their service could be improved and more organized. She needed to exchange the boots for a larger size (she's a size 8, ordered a size 9, ended up needing a size 10), and instead of shipping the new-sized boots to her in Fairbanks, they shipped them to me, in California. After speaking with their office, they said that they would refund the shipping costs, so after going to the shipping store and sending them to AK, and then sending the receipt to the Seger office, I waited patiently for my refund. I called a month later, having not received my refund, they called me back two weeks later to say that they had refunded the money, but not to my card, but to my mother. At this point, I don't care, as long as somebody got refunded, but I didn't think the whole process of ordering boots as a gift was such a confusing process. Trash, would not even give them 1 star. First time i went in, salesperson led me to buy a pair that were too small, saying they would stretch, never did. Had to get rid of them. The 2nd pair i bought had visible manufacturing defects (tried to return them, the salesperson saw the defect and agreed with me) but the manager would not admit it and refused to help me in any way.) Even other people in public have made the comment it looks like you got two right feet. They even admitted the sole was malformed. These boots are not made professionally and are not warm. I recently tried of obtain a pair of mukluks from Steger. The largest size they offer, which has worked with a previous pair I owned. The problem I had was that the ankle was too narrow to fit my foot through. I have heard similar stories of this happening. They recommended an alternate style, but had the same problem. The boot sizes do not take into consideration how wide the ankle must be to get your foot inside the boot. I returned them, but they didn't want to refund my postage. After some pestering, they agreed to refund my return postage at least, but not the original postage I paid stating it was the customer's responsibility for shipping. So, I am paying for shipping on a product I no longer even have, and could not ever use. I continue to complain about this, but their 'policy' does not allow for a complete refund. Save your money for a competitor brand, one that will refund your full price if not happy. I am not happy with Steger. read more

I saved up for Steger mukluks for AGES, and was so excited to try my first pair of Lakota mukluks. They look so much more stylish than UGGS. I live in Tasmania, Australia so the postage was fairly expensive, and when I received them they didn't fit properly. I don't think this was due to them being the wrong size - the Steger website gives detailed advice about choosing the right size, and I had measured carefully. I have fairly narrow feet, but while the toe box was perfectly snug, the heel was very loose, so the boot slipped off my heel every time I walked. My heel would be about 3 inches above the inner sole of the boot, and the back of the boot would drag my socks off so I'd have to keep pulling them up. A smaller size would have been too small. I emailed Stegers and they were very helpful, suggesting different ways I could pad the slipper to stop it slipping off. I was quite desperate, because the boots were beautiful. I tried thicker socks, sheepskin in-soles and half-soles (to elevate just the heel). I even tried slipping padding in behind my heel, but then they were too tight. Nothing worked. I consulted the Steger website for return information, but it clearly stated that boots which showed any signs of wear whatsoever would not be accepted. I hadn't worn my mukluks anywhere but around the house, and only for an hour or two in the hope that I would get used to them, but because the leather is so soft they did look wrinkled, and I knew they wouldn't be able to resell them. Additionally, it would cost me about $125 in non-refundable shipping if I returned them. I ended up selling them as "slightly used" on Ebay and recouped only a fraction of what they cost. I don't have a lot of money, so it was a bit of a disaster and extremely disappointing. I'm pretty sure I actually cried. The mukluks are stylish and beautifully made, and I fully understand that the company can't hand-make these lovely boots only to have people wear them around for an hour or two and then return them, but sadly my recommendation would be only to buy these if you're able to try them on in-store first. read more
