This is where I go every Spring to buy my plants and flowers. The key here is to go around Mother's Day weekend. That's when the selection is the best. The staff have always been very friendly and helpful to us, and I don't find the prices too unreasonable. Especially considering whatever you buy is going to last. I've gotten herbs, indoor and outdoor plants, planters and garden decor here. I've always been pleased with my purchases, and have tried other places but always end up back here. Some of the home decor and other items can be a little pricey, but they do offer a large selection to look through so you can pick what works for you. read more

Stopped in at Steins to take a look at the Christmas trees. Found one in the 6-8' White Pine section I liked for $39.95. Took it up to the checkout to find out it was a black spruce and total price approx. $52. I asked why it was painted green and was told it's a fire retardant and helps the needles stay on longer. I asked if it was safe for cats and was told it was. 1. The manager would not honor the price of $39.95 even though there were 2-3 other Black Spruce in the area that said $39.95. 2. Researching the green paint, it's painted on trees because the needles turn yellow and are unattractive, though it does help the needles stay on longer. 3. The green paint it TOXIC to cats, as is the pine water. So, cat owners with real trees, cover the base with a tree skirt to protect your pets. Left and was driving south on Wauwatosa Road and passed a tree lot on the west side of the street. Pulled in and bought a freshly cut, unpainted 6' Balsam fir tree for $55. Thank you Mequon Stein manager for not honoring the price of the row the tree was in. Not only did I find a beautiful Balsam fir but potentially prevented my cat from ingesting toxic water. read more

I love this Steins location, the staff is always so friendly & helpful and it's never too busy. It's conveniently placed right of Port Washington with easy access and a huge parking lot. We love coming here for seasonal decor, they ALWAYS have sales - a hidden Christmas/Holiday mecca with well-made decor that doesn't look too tacky and is priced well. They also allow dogs in the store which I find helpful as we often stop here after grabbing our pup from doggy daycare. read more

I bought a raspberry bush from this store and it died within a week, before I even had a chance to get it in the ground. I didn't ask for a refund, I just wanted a different plant, but they refused. They said they couldn't tell for sure when the plant died. So not only are their customers not entitled to any quality in the products they sell, they're also liars who can't be trusted to tell the truth. Take the time to go to Bluemel's or Milaeger's. They stand by their products and know how to treat their customers. read more

This Steins is very large but for as much variety as they have they didn't have many choices for each type of plants. I was shopping for arborvitaes and they had 2 sizes, I wish they would have had a smaller option. The checking out process is a bit tricky of lots of people are there with lots of carts. They have a good amount of registered, but they are very close together and the cashiers are behind a wall, so it is awkward. Most of the cashiers seemed pleasant. However, there was one who was crabby and I'm glad she wasn't my cashier. read more

I purchased a six ft cone Christmas tree a week before Christmas from Steins in Mequon. I live in Wisconsin Rapids. I got my purchase home and the tree only lite brightly on half the tree. It did not even get into the yard for display. After Christmas, my son-in-law tried returning the tree for me as he lives in Mequon. They would not reimburse my credit card but only give store credit because it was a 'Christmas' item. This item is defective. Whether it is a Christmas item or not, this item should be reimbursed not given store credit. I would not recommend shopping at Stein's. Obviously, customer satisfaction is far from one of their core objectives. Because I live three hours away, it will be a long time before I shop at this store again. I will have to shop there once in order to use the store credit. I wonder if they will put a time limit on the store credit and I will loose the whole thing!!!! read more

I have been shopping at Stein's since it opened in Mequon. They are very helpful and when I needed sod and topsoil they lifted it and put it on a cart,brought it up to the counter, and loaded it in the car. I have bought many fruit trees from them and only one died. They quickly replaced it (you have to bring in the dead plant/tree). They have very healthy plants. I am an avid gardener and they have many "hard-to-find" plants. If you are a Garden Club member and you lose your receipt, they can look it up for you if you need a refund or replacement. read more

Holy Overpriced-ness. We went here the other day for a squirrel baffle to put on our bird feeder. I found that everything in the place was way overpriced...included the baffle which ran $25. They were having a Tent Sale outside which consisted of junk that I don't think they could GIVE away. It was like weird dolls that had scary faces, ugly lawn decor. I don't mean to sound rude but I can't believe people would even buy that crap...it was that bad. I think the positives would probably be their selection of shrubs and trees but at this point in the year, everything was on sale and they were trying to get rid of inventory. So, for us, the positive was leaving with some money still in the bank :-) read more

Hi Everybody, Even though today was a cold and windy day (wind gusting up to 36 mph and wind chill sometimes as low as 24 degrees) in Wisconsin, I ventured into my local Stein's Garden to take advantage of some of the good fertilizer sales. End up having a very a good visit because of the knowledgeable and professional staff who helped me. My cashier, Rianne was a very friendly and patience young lady who did not mind that I asked a lot of questions and also that midway through the sale, I changed my mind and asked for a different fertilizer. She pleasantly took those back to exchange for the ones I wanted. She was very friendly, accommodating and patient with me; I noted and appreciated that. These days, I never take good customer service for granted. Nathaniel was very helpful while taking my fertilizer and other items to my car. He made sure the car was lined with the plastic so I would not have a car-cleaning job after this transport. Thanks Nate. In addition, if you cannot get a good working botanical answer for your garden/yard question or concern at the Stein's Garden Center near you, then try contacting Becka at the Mequon Stein's store....guaranteed to help you with all of your garden/yard concerns. All in all, though the weather today in Wisconsin was nothing reminiscence of spring time (quite the opposite), today I had a very "warm" and "sunny" experience at my local Mequon Stein's Garden Center. I was buying plants at Stein's Garden Center in Mequon yesterday. I noticed that none of the employees were wearing masks. When I stood at the cash register to pay for my purchases, the young employee, who was not wearing a mask, had a forceful sneeze and did not even attempt to cover his face with his elbow. When I said he needed to wear a mask, he said : " our policy is that masks are optional for employees " and was totally unconcerned. I spoke to the manager who was nearby and was not wearing a mask either. She repeated that the company policy was to leave wearing a mask optional; she also appeared unconcerned. When I was asked to sign the credit card slip , nobody wiped the " electronic pen " attached to the pad. Altogether nobody at Stein's seems concerned about taking basic precautions to protect their customers and employees from COVID-19 risks nor help contain spreading the virus. I will not shop there again. read more

We will no longer do business with Steins. There guarantee that they verbally state when you make a purchase is NOT what you get. We returned several flats of annual flowers because they were dying. We spent many hours trying to get them to grow. When we returned them, we were told "Oh no, there is not guarantee on Annuals." Well that is not what we were told when you were talking our $1000.00 just a month and month and a half ago. Also, YOU lost our Garden Club membership. The first time we spent close to $500 we were told there were 2 families under our number. Now we are told you can't look it up by our number. If I would not know any better, I would guess you are a government agency, loosing all our pertinent information, not doing what you say, having us run from Cedarburg store to Mequon with our paperwork. What a wild goose chase. Honor your warranties. You will not be seeing us this next Fall, Winter or Spring. You took our last hard earned $1000.00. You don't even deserve a 1 star in my book. read more
