This cellar door is not necessarily far away, it's just on a relatively unpopulated road through the 'town' of Bethany and past both it's accommodation and reserve. Essentially it's the last Bethany structure on the road. We were served a delicious array of wines by a knowledgeable staff member who obviously loved the industry she is in. There were quite a number of whites/roses to choose from (perfect for the 29 degree weekend days we enjoyed), including a very sweet riesling - sampled after the reds as a dessert wine, that's how sweet it was!

I have to say, despite the gorgeous view, I was a bit let down. The cellar door, while seemingly rustic and aged/cosy from the outside, beautifully cut into the hill, was actually quite sterile and plain inside. It had a funny sort of feel to it - there was one group sitting down doing an extended tasting, hidden behind a couple of port barrels, and not much space at the bar. There were a couple of ladies behind the bar serving, but one took, I don't know, maybe five minutes while we were standing there before she even acknowledged us, even though we weren't being served. But not just that, she was looking straight at us the whole time, and continued to polish the wine glasses in the back of the bar! That annoyed me a little. Following this, we got a half-hearted attempt at talking us (by us, I mean a couple of South Aussies and an English Tourist) through some of the wines. The majority of what was on offer was 2011 vintage, which was again, not to my liking. I understand that, at the end of the day, especially on a Sunday, serving customers non-stop can get a little tiresome but you should never show that to the customer. Or make them feel like you're doing them the favour by being there. I got an inkling of that feeling and, looking back on it, it didn't impress me much. I hope to return to see how they go on a Friday or Saturday soon enough. But in the meantime, there are a few other places I'd recommend before coming here.

Was not disappointed, Michael Papps was a fantastic host making spectacular wines that speak for themselves. Walked away with probably the best Pinot noir I have tasted of Australian origin, with only 600 bottles made I count myself lucky. Minimal intervention wine, relaxed tasting experience without the snobbery very commonly linked with some places in the industry. Will be back again for sure. Good range of home grown goodies (lentils etc) to take away if you aren't a big wino, with regional cheese platters on offer. Great outside area for chilling out with a few wines and good company.

Not only were the wines fantastic, but this was a real cellar door experience. It's just in a room in a nice rustic house, where you're seated down, music put on, and we were treated to breads and olive oil as well as crazy-good chocolate truffles to pair with the tasting. The winemaker has no vineyards and buys all grapes from selected growers across the Barossa valley. Production is only a bit over 10 tons where 1 ton produces ~140 dozen bottles. Wine maker is multi-talented. His paintings, which form the labels, line the tasting room. A tasting at this place requires an appointment (although, we got lucky and drove up unannounced, and found another group - who *had* made an appointment - about ready to leave!) Note: review and rating is for cellar-door *experience*, but the quality of wines and olive oil was also very high here.

This winery is only about 15 minutes from my friend's house and the view was splendid. We drove up to a packed parking lot and were hoping we'd find a seat. It's a boutique winery only open on the weekends. After heading straight to the open lawn and taking in the scenery, we headed inside to see if they had tastings available. They place all the bottles on the counter that they are available to taste so sometimes the items on the tasting menu they have in front of you isn't the same. The man who started our tasting for us wasn't the kindest and that's unfortunate because it cost the place a star. He was short and got us started for our tasting but then started serving other customers that came in. Another staff member continued and served us a few other options but a smile and a little more attentiveness to your customers would go along way. I loved the 2013 Sparkling Frontignac. OMG! It was very me. It's fresh, crispy, bubbly, and has touches of peach! I love peaches and the sip from start to finish was great! I really wish that I had purchased a bottle now. The food coming from the kitchen smelled wonderful! They had cheese platters, brushetta, and pizzas available. I wish we could come a little later so we could have had lunch but we started our tour here and ended up having coffees or a glass of sparkling in my case! Great place where I saw families with kids, big groups, a 50th birthday celebration, and couples. It's a place for everyone!

For such a long drive you would expect a lunch with fresh local produce but all they offer is set pre made pizza or bruschetta and that's it. If on a budget and you just want a big slice of pizza and a glass of wine then this place is perfect but the winery lunch has moved so far from this place in recent years. Even with the pizzas after getting used to gourmet wood fired thin pizzas now available in so many places it was a bit hard going back to these old style thick greasy cheesey salty Pizzas. The bruschetta was good though but after that you don't feel like more of the same on a pizza. I suspect they cater mostly to locals and they do what they do well. With their set system they can serve a large number of people quickly so unlike other winery restaurants that try to get too complex you won't have to wait long. Great lawn area for kids and a great place for a big group on a budget. The service was prompt and everything was hot.

It is such a heaving, complex beast, the winery, if you ever get a chance to check out the guts of one on your travels. Everything from planting, protecting, feeding and nurturing (I'm not kidding, Turkey Flat sprayed sunscreen on their vines last vintage! Who woulda thunk it!?) the vines, to the picking, producing, fermenting, bottling, marketing etc etc etc, there are a LOT of moving parts! And to try and understand them is why some people spend years at university learning the craft. However, most wineries won't give you all of their dirty little secrets (alright, some of them might, but they don't want to ruin their chance of a sale so it's unlikely!) that most of the winery workers know. Turkey Flat is the exception for me here. Not that there were any dirty little secrets to be told this time around, but the cellar door attendant, despite only doing 1 day a week, was extremely knowledgable about all of the wines and provided us with some great info on the various vintages, grapes and also general goings on in the area, following the Annual Barossa Vintage Festival which was held last weekend. Go check out the website for more info on the wines, and do yourself a favour and pop in here while you're up in the BV. It's a worthwhile experience and you will taste some truly magic wines.

Now, we could not talk to each other and the baby was going nuts because it was just so loud in there. When our food did come my blood pressure was so high from all the noise I gulped it down! We were forgotten about and given no bread with our meals which was a real dampener and hubby's schnitzel came with a free hair.
