So we had a look in Loebethal and a few other little towns around but just couldn't find anything that looked appealing. Well, luckily we decided to drive the extra 17km to Birdwood because Pomegranate Cottage is a truly lovely place! They have a very cute outside garden, with a fountain and surrounded by lots of trees and flowers so on a sunny day it's probably the best place you can find in Birdwood for lunch. (Mind you the choice isn't that big either) Great setting, friendly service and a good selection of food, ranging from pies to salads, fish to meat and some sandwiches. I had the beef pie for $14, which came with a small salad (no dressing though) and fries. You could tell the pie was homemade and not coming from a freezer. Very tasty and in terms of size I think the dishes are alright for the prices they charge. One thing that bothered me very much though is that the waitress came clearing the plates of the 3 people that were with me while I was still eating. That's an absolute no-go and would be a reason for me not to go back. However, the food was very good so I still recommend the place.

Plus many more options for the non-glutards. I had to opt for the meat pie with chips and gravy. Don't know how long it's been since I had a pie! Home made in store, it was full of juicy mince with a crisp tasty pie crust. It's impossible to make gf pie crust taste the same as the gluteny variety, but this is a great approximation and it hit my pie spot and filled me happily. The staff were a father and son team who were hugely welcoming and friendly, making it a lovely place to be. I found out they have been the owners for 2 months now, and while the owner was unsure whether to continue the gf menu, he's had a positive response from people excited to have gf yummies. I do hope he keeps it up! It was a great surprise to find a very gf-friendly cafe in a small place like Gawler. Also must be mentioned - great coffee and excellent prices! Lunch for $7-$13? I'm good with that. But really, great coffee. Not too strong but with a lovely nutty flavour. Goes perfectly with a homemade gf muffin for just $5.90. Big thumbs up from a happy glutard.

The Topiary is located Newman's Nursery, and is a picturesque setting from what we could see in the dark. Keep an eye out while driving down Northeast Road at night so that you don't miss the driveway as the lighting on that road is pretty dim. Once inside, there is ample parking, and you'll likely be greeted on the way up to the restaurant by a friendly, vocal cat that hangs around. We enjoyed an excellent six course meal, each meal being made from locally sourced or foraged ingredients and paired with a different wine. One of the standouts for me was the sou-vide egg with pork belly and forest mushrooms. At the end, the chef introduced himself and talked about the final dessert item, garnishing it with a sprinkle of carrot seeds from the garden. It was a nice touch, and we were all very appreciative of the hard work and attention to detail that went into the food. This was a really good night! The food was excellent and the staff were welcoming and attentive, but not needy. The building has a real rustic charm to it, and my only regret was that we couldn't go out to see the outdoors as it was dark and freezing. I'm looking forward to coming here for breakfast or lunch some time and see the place during daylight hours.

The coffee and food was really good to-boot (? Is that the right word, not sure... But you get the idea). The Throttle Shed has that tucked away feeling but it's actually not very far off Main North Road at all. They seem to have their regulars as others that came in to the cafe all seemed quite familiar with each other which just added to the overall pleasantness. My husband and I were really glad we stopped to check this place out. Ps. They also appear to be open every day except Tuesdays. (They were even open on Christmas Day according to the signage we saw).
