The first she kind of half-listened to what we wanted to work on (a very specific communication issue), trotted out some gender-essentialist ideas about how sex between men and women works, and was real insistent that my husband must have abandonment issues because he never met his biological father (he does not). Second session, she clearly hadn't read her notes, so we had to reiterate everything we'd come there to be helped for. She then informed us that my dysregulated emotions were the main problem in my relationship with my husband and that she couldn't possibly see us until I'd had DBT. Thank God I have a stable, loving, non-abusive relationship. Imagine the kind of nightmare that situation would have been otherwise-- abruptly discharging a couple after two visits after blaming the entirety of their problems on one person.

I was reluctant to start therapy, as an independent and self-driven man. I was concerned about retaining a relative stranger to who'd try to tell me what to do. This was not THAT. For the past twelve months my therapist has been very instrumental in supporting me in a myriad of ways, while simultaneously enhancing my sense of self-efficacy.
