I would NOT recommend getting your hair dyed here. I had an appointment with Leah yesterday. I asked for deep subtle navy blue hair, which we discussed the appointment before. First, she suggested we highlight my hair and then go over it with blue. After 3 hours at the salon, my hair was a gross green color. My entire scalp was blue and the rest of my hair were all different colors (dark brown, bright blue and green) I politely told her that it didn't come out as I hoped it would. Leah insisted that she would come in another day this week to fix it for me. This was sweet of her but I didn't live locally so driving back down would be a hassle for me. When it was time to checkout, the hairdresser Leah was standing there as I was told my total came to $145. I felt uncomfortable because I didn't want to upset anyone but I was surprised they were making me pay this amount. I left a 30$ tip for Leah despite my disappointment. Half an hour later I called the salon to speak with a manager and was told Stephanie left for the day. I gave my name and the reason for my call (inquiring about a refund). I called back the next day and was told Stephanie (the owner) was with clients, but that she would return my call. I received a voicemail 20 minutes later from Stephanie. She stated that she was aware of what happened because she spoke with Leah. She said, "This sometimes happens with funky colors" and "We don't do refunds here at the salon. It's in our policies". How would I know that this is their policy? I was never made aware of this or signed anything. I'm angry and upset that I'm not getting at least a partial refund for the hair coloring service I received and was not happy with. Although they're saying I can come back to get it fixed, I'm afraid to will look worse and become even more damaged. Be warned and take this into consideration if your thinking about getting your hair colored here. read more

I would only recommend this salon to those I don't actually like. This establishment is nothing short of an embarrassment to the beauty industry. Not only was the manager (I believe her name was Maureen) racist but she insisted that I didn't give enough cash when I was more then sure that I did. Her personality and inability to tend to her clients revolved around her broken ankle and blatant racism. I hope no one else gives this place another dollar because of you do you would be feeding a monster. I tend not to be a bias perspective, however people like Maureen take it out of me. I have been a faithful client of Stephen & Co. for 10+ years and am unabashed, raving fan. I have been consistently impressed with the professionalism and knowledge demonstrated by the staff at this salon. Stylists are personable, well informed and realistic. They use excellent products, and remember your preferences between appointments. The salon is invariably clean, organized, and runs on time... Amanda is a superstar behind the front desk. Stylists sometime deliver hard truths (your naturally curly mane may not turn into silky smooth locks with a magic elixir), but some realistic coaching is much preferred to disappointment post processing. Stephen & Company's pricing structure is very fair, given the overall talent of the staff. I am faithful to Leah and Sarah, but all of the stylists have their specialties. They also train all of their staff to perform killer blowouts! I get a minimum of 3 days of lovely hair after a blowout at Stephen & Co., and 4 days if Kiki does the blowout. read more

Love this place! I am a guy and after several typical experiences at the chain hair cut places in the mall, I need something new, and I found this place. I was a bit nervous at first, as it was going to be only for women or to high strung, but my nerves were calmed very quickly! This place is great. The people at the front desk are wicked nice, very friendly, offering you a drink as soon as you come in. If it is your first time there, they even offer to take you around on a little tour of the place. The cosmetologists are all awesome! The senior staff know what they are doing, and if you have any questions, they can answer anything with great suggestions. They give a great cut, but it can be a bit pricey, so when you go you can save a little money by asking for a rising star. These people are just as good!!!! I have referred a total of 4 new people to go here, my partner, friend, cousin, and mom, all of them who continue to go back here! If you are looking for a new place or a new style, check them out, it cannot hurt! They also offer other services, such as spray tans, massages, and other things, not too sure as I have not checked those out, but you can look into it! read more

I have been a faithful hair client of Sarah at Stephen & Company for years. As a testiment to my devotion, for the past 5 years I travel to Dartmouth from Providence (a 45 minute ride) because I can't bear the thought of someone else coloring or styling my hair. Unlike some other reviewers, I find that the pricing is very fair given the quality of service and the clean/bustling/professional enviroment. The front desk staff is consistent, efficient and very well trained. The products used during the hair services are high-quality and appropriate to specific hair concerns, etc. This salon differs from almost every other salon that I have ever frequented in that it takes customers on time, every time. I don't know how they do it, but it is refreshing. I don't think that I have ever waited more than five minutes past my appointment time. The only difficulty is rescheduling appointments. Regular clients are stongly encouraged to book ahead. To that end, I book my entire year's appointments in January (which is unbelievably convenient!). However, when last minute changes need to be made it isn't always easy to get in with your preferred stylist. Obviously I am a raving fan of the salon... the reason that I didn't give the salon a full five stars has very little to do with the hair service. I have been disappointed with varous nail technicians the few times I have made an appointment here. I want to love the experience, but I've never been able to latch on to a consistenly good/professional manicurist. There also seems to be a fair amount of turnover in that particular department relative to the other departments in the salon. read more

as a broke graduate student, finding a decent haircut for a reasonable price was a difficult task. Stephen and Co definitely delivered on both counts. they offer a student discount with current ID for a haircut for $19. i have no idea if this discount extends to other services, as this is all i got at the salon, so i can't speak to their abilities as colorists, etc. however, they do great cuts for a really reasonable price. i had a number of different stylists over the time i went there, and each one was just as good as the last. i have short hair that i like cut in a pretty precise manner, and they really listened to what i wanted and did it well. i always felt a bit pampered when i went there, starting with a complimentary coffee or tea and a vigorous, soothing shampoo. i never knew getting my head rubbed that hard would feel so great (ha). the stylists are all really sweet and chatty and fun to talk to. the interior of the salon is beautiful - homey and comfortable with huge windows and lots of natural light. the reception staff is always friendly and organized. i wish i still lived near here - my haircut misses Stephen and Co. read more

I recently went to Stephen & Co for a facial as a birthday gift from my boyfriend. The aesthetician, Laura, was excellent. It was my first facial ever and I had no idea what it even was, but she let me know exactly what was happening and what products she was using and why. The service was prompt and the bed/room was extremely comfortable and relaxing. My judgment of the salon atmosphere however can be described as hectic. They do seem to generate alot of business, but they seem properly staffed for the volume of customers. Overall, I don't think I will be leaving my current hair dressers for the ones here, but their spa is fantastic. read more

It seems that Stephen & Co is one of the few places in the New Bedford area to get a decent haircut. I have been going here for years because I have not found a comparable salon in the area. I have seen many different stylists here (I like trying new ones) but have recently been happy with Kayla. I have found an amazing salon in Boston so I am not sure I will be back here, but for anyone locally interested in trying something new, this is your place. The salon had a major renovation fairly recently (the last couple of years) and the resulting building is beautifully furnished, welcoming, stylish, and more spacious as they took advantage of their second floor. They offer an extensive array of services including massage, nails, wedding and special occasion, any type of hair treatment (cut, color, extensions, etc), waxing, and more. They are pricey and because of this I am often hesitant to schedule an appointment. I would feel differently if I left with amazing hair each time, but that just is not the case; paying $60 for an okay haircut is not exactly my idea of fun. My whole wash, cut, and dry usually has me in and out in 20-ish minutes. In my experience, however, the staff has been professional, helpful, and enjoyable to talk to. I do not want my partial negative feedback to cloud the fact that Stephen & Co is a classy salon with many talented stylists. Just find a stylist who listens to and gives you what you ask for and stick with him or her. Note: another nice, full-service salon in the area happens to be just seconds away from Stephen & Co, MedAesthetic Salon & Day Spa. My situation was a little funny. MIL booked a wash and dry whem what we really wanted was a styling for a wedding, also a few people in my party were late, so there was a problem with the ammount of time scheduled for us. Not everyone got what they wanted because of time. My stylist actually took someone else I think while I waited for my party so I had to wait longer when they came but it ended to my advantage because she was able to style my hair. I showed her a few pictures of the general idea for what I wanted, she did a great job! I had sticker shock when I got the bill though. I've never had my hair styled professionally before so I don't know if it's fair or not, you can decide if it's worth it yourself. $80 for a style alone without wash, dry, cut or anything else. read more

We were so lucky to find this awesome hair salon. We were vacationing nearby in Marion, MA when our daughter joined us. She really wanted to have a balayage and I needed a haircut, too. Stephen's is a clean, modern facility with a family atmosphere. I have been a client there for many years. I book my appointments a year ahead. On the few occasions I have had to change them, the staff tries very hard to reschedule with my favorite stylist. I find the pricing a bit high, but fair for the quality of the coloring and styling. Stylists are professional and regularly update their skills. My regular stylist was quick to notice the development of a skin cancer on my face, so I was able to receive prompt treatment. I would urge anyone who has a bad experience to bring it to the attention of the receptionist. The behavior of the manicurist described here would not be tolerated if the management were aware of it. read more

I had my keratin treatment done here 1 month back. It was really bad. Did not last a week.Hair became very coarse frizzy and started to lose some hair. I will never recommend this place for keratin treatment. Don't waste your money. They are ok for cuts only. My color came out immediately after washing first time at home. The only reason I used to go there was massage therapy is awesome but now I don't plan to go there at all after number of unhappy results. That one star is for massage therapy they have. read more

Stephen & Co is a reliable salon with hair dressers that I trust. I tend to jump around from salon to salon - going wherever is most convenient but whenever possible I try to make it to Stephen & Co. I've visited many salons and Stephen & Co is by far my preferred spot. While at Stephen & Co I've had a ton of different stylist (I book based on dates and times that work for me rather then what works for a specific stylist) and all of them have done a great job. I would say that overall the price is average and what you're going to pay at a reliable salon. I wish they would expand their locations up North so I could visit on a more regular basis. I don't recommend to color hair in black with their product. Not sure what brand they used but it took me 2,5 weeks to wash out the black color during the shower. Every time after a shower the bathtub was in black-purple color and it stays for long if I don't rise away. read more

Stephen and Co did our wedding hair and make up for myself and my large (11 people) bridal party. Everyone looked stunning! Kiki, Sandy and co did a great job! They had mimosas ready for us, too, and allowed us to bring bagels and fruit salad to enjoy. We had the salon to ourselves, and it was super fun. Very very disappointed! I went in with black hair, yes I dye the roots frequently. I explained this to the stylist and she said it was not a problem. I requested purple highlights, from a photo from a salon in NH,on woman with black hair!!! She highlighted my hair to this light brown color, which I knew the purple wouldnt show up on! She tried 2 times, to lighten my hair! Hell I can lighten it lighter than she did. She tells me after the color doesnt take, oh you have a film on your hair?! A film, um no You just washed my hair 2 times. Yes i dye my hair, so does everyone else. I explained I had bought violet red and had no problem getting it to lift to the red 4 months ago . Then she said I needed to cut 4 inches from my hair, it would help it take. We cut the 4 inches and nothing. I have 3 spots under the light you can see a tint of purple! The purple I requested was beautiful. She tells me she wont charge me for the purple, but has to charge me for the highlights!! are you kidding me! The highlights did nothing,, you did not go light enough on top of my black!!! I get the bill after 2:45 minutes of now shorter hair ,with no purple.. a whopping 78$ !! For freaking what??? I was kind and gave a tip of 10$. I will not return , nor recommend anyone. Funny any other salon can pull this off np! I would also like to add, another stylists came over and was shocked no purple. She could see my frustration. The stylist said feel her hair, dont you feel a film ? The woman said," no not really," and gave me this look of oops sorry your not happy. I went there because their website states that they have different levels of hair stylists and training. I made an appointment with a "Master" stylist. I brought in the photos of the haircut I wanted and asked if she could do it. She said, "Yes." I left there with a horrible haircut and definitely not what the picture was. The picture had straight bangs, she gave me this huge space missing in the middle of my bangs. The whole cut was horrible. She told me should would call me and followup because their clients matter - apparently she knew how bad the haircut was because she never even called me back. I paid "Master" prices and then had to pay another hair salon to fix it. Horrible. read more

Never again. I have been going to Stephen and Co. for the past 8 years. But that all ends today. I have referred friends and was embarrassed when they left unhappy with recent services. Unfortunately, I gave Stephen and Co the benefit of the doubt and paid the price, literally. During my recent visit all the warning signs were there. After I checked in I observed a customer being turned away because they had mistakenly canceled her 8:30 am appointment and asked her to come back at 10:00. To their credit they did give her $25 towards her next service. I continued to wait 15 minutes and then confirmed with the receptionist that I was checked in for hair and makeup. I was having a very special photo session with my 8 month old daughter that morning. Apparently the receptionist had not checked me in. Then I met my hairstylist who will remain unnamed. She was clearly a bit frazzled. Because I had not been checked in she was now late for her next appointment. Her mind was not on me as she was giving her next customer a consultation. My hairstylist was distracted the entire time. I requested a rather significant transformation and gave the stylist several cuts to choose from that I had researched to be good for my thick wavy hair. I also wanted something easy to style and maintain as I am a mom who works full-time. Well, my stylist did not give me the cut I wanted and I could tell that she knew it. She called in for reinforcements and her hands were noticeably shaky. She even left me to consult with other stylist who I could see looking at me. This made me very uncomfortable. I do believe she did the best she could but if she knew her best wasn't going to be good enough she should have told me this was not a cut she could execute. During the cut I could tell the stylist was trying to shirk responsibility. She told me my hair was "deceivingly thick" and the cut was for fine hair. But I picked the haircut from research I did for thick, wavy hair and my face shape. Then I was told by the stylist who my stylist brought in for help that I had "funny little cowlicks". The fact is, my stylist cut my hair too short and did not master the style I had requested. And to top it all off they did not do my makeup. The same receptions who did not properly check me in told me they didn't have anyone available because my haircut took too long. She blamed me for this, stating I got a complete make over and this didn't allow for the time for my makeup. She said they didn't have anyone, that the makeup artist waited and waited. When I explained to the receptionist that this is something that should be communicated to the customer she blamed my hairstylist for not telling me. There was only excuses. They did not take any responsibility and did not offer any complimentary services. I was visibly upset and explained I had I photo shoot with my daughter within the hour. The receptionist only tried to make small talk with me. This was one of the most unprofessional experiences I have ever had. I left there without my makeup and with a botched haircut. I will not be going back. I will not refer people to Stephen and Co. In fact, I will warn people to stay away from a place that provides inconsistent haircuts and terrible customer service at a high price. read more
