When I lived in Northern New Mexico back around 1980, Truchas was a remote place that you drove through, but rarely stopped as the locals didn't take too kindly to strangers. Maybe the influx of artists into this area has softened the cultural differences. Anyway, High Road Artisans is a nifty co-op that is worth a stop. When you enter the building, there's a big room in the back and some smaller rooms in front that feature a wide range of local art. I think there's also some studio space in other places. It's a very friendly place and folks here are really nice and helpful. Clean restrooms too. I ended up with a ringed barbed wire piece with a cross, that reminded me of this area's unique Easter-time religious practices. I'd love to come back and take another look.

Highlights include hand woven wool rugs, jewelry, Bill Loyd's bells, traditional weaving, pottery, Gerrard Durand wooden bowls, Sally Delap John paintings, Mary Hockenberry photographs, Betsy William's little plates, Kathryn Blackmun's whimsical tiles and plates, Jean Nichol's watercolors, handmade soap wrapped in high road illustrated papers, gourd art, prints, cards and tchotchkes.

You make an appointment to visit Eric and Shaun who represent some of the finest modern and contemporary artists in Taos. I just bought a painting by an artist whose work I had been eying for three years. They were terrific at showing me a number of works and giving me the history of the paintings and the artists. They host openings and receptions, and it is well worth your time to get on their mailing lists. This gallery is not just for seasoned collectors who have a ton of money; it is also a great place for new collectors who are drawn to the best work of Taos artists.

It was absolutely one of my favorite shops while visiting Taos. It was filled with all sorts of little knick knacks and treasures. My eyes were on a Mickey Mouse inspired ring (which I will go back for so keep your paws off!!). My wife ended up picking up some rare out of print book and a few southwestern style gifts for her sister. If you've visited an art gallery in NM you've probably been looking at a lot of landscapes and…read moredesert scenes, but modern art is alive and well in El Prado at Carol Dee's Art Gallery. Just a few doors down from the Farmhouse Cafe (see my review about them) in what must be El Prado's version of a mini mall, sits Carol Dee's gallery. A somewhat small, rectangular space brims with some of the most unique modern style art you might see in NM this side of Meow Wolf. It all starts out in front of the gallery, with the spinning metal creations made by the guy with the patent on the spinning mechanism. Once inside the gallery space, you will find a variety of mostly local artists and their unique take on modern styles and expressions. Tomas created a warm and inviting atmosphere helping me to exploring each and every piece of art, and there is a lot of work fit into this space. If you're an art lover and tired of seeing the same old NM style art, this is a must see for you. Come for lunch at the Farmhouse Cafe and stay to browse the wonderful creations inside Carol Dee's gallery. Highly recommended.
