Newburgh has been punching above its weight for a good 10-15 years or so now with cafés, gourmet…read moreshops, art galleries and a variety of antique shops. Prior to that, it was zilch and downright brutal. But now, this city is more than the eye-candy shops- it's also been home to the most ornate Victorian architecture I've ever seen in NY State. Don't want to take you too far down memory lane, but hubs tells me when he was at a Newburgh Navy base training site in the 80s, this area was dilapidated down to the bones. Fast forward- Brooklynites and Manhattanites have been coming in droves nowadays to set up their homes in greener pastures. When we head up to Woodstock, hubs and I at times take a detour and see what's new in the hood despite its lows. I know gentrification is a double-edged sword and can save a crumbling city from the wrecking ball- yet that true Newburgh social piece isn't going anywhere. But we also like the changes we've seen over the years: the Art flair that's so visible, eateries and the culture that still remains and the best hole-in-the-wall shops we've run into. This is a good example of how some neighborhoods are best off-the-beaten path.

The Town of Newburgh is an absolute Gem. The homes are a bit pricey and the residents lean…read moreconservative. Their are a lot of trendy eateries and some night life. The residents tend to be older and established. there is little to no crime in the "Town" of Newburgh. The residents in the town are Pro Police and welcome the Police. The "City" of Newburgh is a different story. it's high in crime with liberal policies destroying a once historic City. The good residents of The city of Newburgh should change their political views since the progressive way of thinking is not doing any justice for the City. many residents in the City are not as friendly toward the police and have negative views of the police. The Town and City both have separate Police Forces. Both police forces are professional and have outstanding police officers.

Julia L. Butterfield Memorial Library - Love this library!

I adore libraries - must be the nerd in me - and I love the Butterfield Library in Cold Spring. The…read moreadorable brick building aside, it is everything I think of when imagining the perfect library: historic, well-preserved interior, complete with (nonfunctional) fireplace; large guilded paintings of the founders, dressed in fine 19th century garb; neatly stacked shelves; graceful tables for sitting and reading; and a friendly staff. The library is small - the literature/fiction section is in front, while most of the historical and non-fiction texts are located in the larger room, which has a stage for presentations. There is also a children's section downstairs, and the library has two computers for browsing the card catalog. I've been able to find books I've wanted here, but just as often end up requesting items through Butterfield's interlibrary loan system (remember, it's a small place). But I don't care where the books come from, really - I just love climbing the front steps, opening the door and entering Library Land. Not chaotic, we-must-queue-up-New-York-Public-Library-land, but Old Fashioned Library Land, where you can gather your books together and linger, because lingering is necessary and encouraged.

I've got my own library locally to visit for books, reference material, periodicals, media, etc., but if I lived in Marlboro I'd be at their library often. Besides a good inventory of books, there's several dozen periodicals available, a movie library, several computers, and more. In this age of ever-increasing dependence on digital, they're keeping current. But what I really like is that they have a large children's area - it's important to get children interested in reading (and libraries) at an early age. They have 2 large parking lots which can easily hold regulars and folks who might be attending a function in the Community Room. The bathrooms are always clean and well-maintained too. The Community Room has enough space, tables, and chairs to accommodate several dozen people. Multimedia services are available. There's also a side prep room with a small but full-service kitchen. I've always found the staff of the library to be extremely friendly and helpful. You should take advantage of their occasional fund-raisers, such as their book sales too.

There are computers and a printer for public use. You can pick up dvds and audio books. The library also has an online catalog that is extremely convenient. Every time I visit I see people of all ages using computers, being tutored, selecting books, it makes my heart happy!
