Loved the historic feel of the playhouse which was very appropriate for the play. Pasadena Playhouse. Brigadoon. If you're considering…read morespending your hard-earned time and money at the Pasadena Playhouse, do yourself a favor: skip opening night. Wait for the unbiased reviews to trickle in before committing to their latest offerings, because if Brigadoon is the current standard, the bar hasn't just been lowered--it's been buried. Wednesday's opening night was, to put it bluntly, a stinker. We arrived with open minds and tempered expectations; we weren't looking for a Gene Kelly reincarnation or a Broadway-scale miracle. We understand the constraints of regional theater. However, what we witnessed was so profoundly lackluster that it felt less like a professional production and more like a mediocre college workshop. The "Highland" Lowlights: * Atrocious Casting: With the sole exception of Betsy Morgan--who possessed the only singing and dancing chops worthy of the material--the casting was a disaster. * Cultural Caricature: The premise of Brigadoon relies on a town preserved in time to protect its Scottish heritage. Why, then, was this cast like a generic Disney Channel original movie? The "Scottish" culture on display was a cringeworthy caricature reminiscent of a Mike Myers sketch. In a city like Los Angeles, home to thousands of versatile actors, is authenticity really that hard to find? * Anemic Energy: The choreography was limp, and the vocal performances were consistently weak. The sound system was so quiet it felt like a mercy killing; perhaps turning it up would have provided the "punch" the performers so desperately lacked. I cannot remember the last time I saw a professional audience flee after only a few scenes. We endured the first half, but left at intermission. It was simply that unbearable. While the Pasadena Playhouse relies on the generosity of donors to stay afloat, one has to wonder: is there any quality control left? Or is the current mode of operation simply to shovel substandard content at a captive audience? Thank God we aren't trapped in this version of Brigadoon for a hundred years. 45 minutes was more than enough.

I am shocked that we live near The Huntington, yet we visited for the very first time two days ago…read more The garden was pretty and spacious. The good part was that I enjoyed the garden and had my daughter all to myself for a few hours. The bad part was that we did not have enough time for her to visit the museum. She did not even tell me until after we left, and she blamed me for wasting too much time in the garden. In my defense, we did arrive only a few hours before closing. What you need to know before going: I recommend going early in the morning so you have all day for sightseeing, especially if you will be photographing the place. They are open from 10 AM to 5 PM, six days a week. They are closed on Tuesdays. I suggest booking tickets in advance. I am sure they allow you to purchase tickets there, but to be safe, go on their website and book ahead. https://www.huntington.org Parking is free and there is plenty of it. They do have ticket windows like the ones we see at amusement parks. You come up to one of the windows and they scan the barcode on your ticket for entrance. You may come any time after your booked time that same day. They do ask to verify ID if you choose the student ticket. Student is $28 per ticket. Adult is $34 per ticket. Check their website for more pricing. They offer membership as well. Ladies, do not wear heels. You will regret it. Make sure to bring flats or other shoes just in case. I seldom wear heels now, and my tennis shoes sure saved the day. They do have shuttles to take people around the garden, but I could not find the shuttle stops. Plus the garden was too beautiful to waste sitting on a shuttle. The Huntington includes the following landscapes, but is not limited to: the Japanese Garden, the Chinese Garden, a bamboo grove (my favorite), a koi pond, an arched stone bridge, open lawns, and beautiful flower beds. After the garden, my daughter and I dropped by 1919 Cafe near the entrance to grab a quick bite and get refreshers. It was a fulfilling visit, at least I thought so. Not so much for my girl, but there is always next time. SYOY!

The Chinese Garden & Japanese Garden was especially stunning, with peaceful ponds, traditional architecture, and incredible views around every corner. The Japanese Garden, bonsai collection, and conservatories were equally impressive. The grounds are spotless, the staff is friendly, and there are so many quiet places to slow down and appreciate nature. If you enjoy photography, this place is a dream--there are beautiful photo opportunities everywhere you look. I also enjoyed browsing the gift shop before leaving. Whether you're looking for a relaxing afternoon, inspiration, or just a break from the city, The Huntington is absolutely worth visiting. I'll definitely be back.

You can see the motivation of the students, motivation driven by a far more motivated owner/instructor - Emily. I had a front row seat, far right. Not an ideal seat for a show, but I was uniquely positioned because I could see behind the curtain. I could see Emily. Most of the time she had her typical serious demeanor. But every once in a while, I'd see a smile. It wasn't for anyone. No one was looking at her, the girls were performing. But in that moment, I could see her joy, her dedication, her passion. What a beautiful smile. And what joy she's given our daughters - and certainly to many others. I'd post a picture, but "NO PICTURES ALLOWED!"... so I don't have any. Highly recommended. Not just for the instruction, but equally for the love of the art.

I also love that the policy on masks is that they are allowed in class AND allowed in performances as long as they are of an appropriate style. So for the families where this is important, this is a place to go! There is plenty of parking around the studio and lots of different classes and times to choose from. You can watch the students dance from a tv in the waiting lobby. The staff is friendly and they provide you the costumes for each performance. The only thing that kind of bothers me is the very long flight of stairs that you need to walk to get to the studio but it just means I get to actually get some exercise in! lol
