What a cool shop! There's even crafty stuff in here if you're not a knitter. There were gorgeous stamped patterns for needlework, and a huge display of drawers holding lots and lots of buttons. Besides all the beautiful yarns and projects full of potential, the best thing about this shop was the people. The owner, Charlene, is very helpful and willing to assist you at any point in your project. The rapport between her and the shopping and knitting guests is warm and wonderful. Love the shop but the sales clerk could be coached on how to better interact with customers Greeting a customer with "we close in 15 minutes" wasn't the best approach when I stopped in to buy a sweaters quantity of malabrigo. I opted not to spend my money there that day and chose a $10 item Instead only to be told "we prefer another form of payment for anything under $25" You've got to be kidding me. I offered to come back another day rather than not use my debit card and she gave in by saying ""we're supposed to say that" I give up The store stock is fabulous, the displays are beautiful, samples really are lovely but it's all diminished by sub par customer care. read more

"Come on in! We're AWESOME!" This was the sign I noticed - much smaller than the sign out front that declares that YARN is sold here, but it's what grabbed my attention and made me smile. The chalkboard by the door made me laugh out loud (do take the time to walk up and read it for yourself). My first experience at Stitch in Time began with these positive postings outside, and I had been hopeful about this local-enough-to-me shop (I live in Brighton) after having learned that it has been in business 27 years and that the owner, Charlene Hatfield, is a certified instructor with the Yarn Council of America. Wow. And wowed I was upon entering. Among the first items I spied were my favorite brands of needles, then some beautiful yarn, and more beautiful yarn. Then Charlene popped around the corner - it was a Wednesday, and she was at the table with those gathered for open knitting each week, available from 10 AM until 6 PM. I was given a verbal guide to the store, invited to open cupboards and doors to look and touch anything, and had some of the specialty yarns highlighted - some from Dublin, Stitch in Time's own line, and others from indie dyers from the US. The armoire stocked with Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift has to be seven feet tall, six feet wide, and stocked with more colors than I have seen anywhere I have looked (as I haven't yet been to Scotland)! I have found *my* LYS here in Michigan! The feeling of warmth and welcome exuded by each person I met, the caliber of Charlene's knitting knowledge and ability to elevate my skills, and the inspiration that adorns the walls, tops of cabinets, and shelves all combine to make *this* the Gold Standard shop in The Mitten! Charlene was very sweet and knowledgeable. I loved the vast sections of yarn and notions! She appears to have great crafting classes such as a rug hooking class that I'm considering for me and my mom! I'll definitely be back! I love this store! It is a warm, friendly place to go with yarns beautifully arranged. In the middle of the store there is a big wooden table with chairs all around it where you can sit and talk, knit or crochet, look at different combinations, or choose your pattern. This about a 400 sq. ft. of space has a homey feel. There is yarn and project bags, and cones of thread and other gorgeous stuff in every nook, drawer and corner of this place. Can be very busy with just handful of people coming in there, since the shop is in a very small space, but the shop owner is wonderful. Charlene has a knack for selecting a great variety of yarn, books, needles, kits for her store. Not to mention the classes and group knitting Wednesdays. She brings in instructors to teach everything imaginable from tatting to rug hooking sunflowers to crochet, and Charlene teaches knitting classes herself- what an absolute treat! She very patiently let me pick out yarn, and change my mind, and peek around her shop for about an hour. She has great staff and great customer service. Offered to order a yarn I was looking for, even though they didn't stock it. Also, always something going on in this shop. Has a lively Facebook page, and sales events and birthday coupons,- so worth a trip! read more
