Well, besides the fact that we didn't take proper measures to get internet during our stay since we relied on our cousins to do that, all I did was check-in to areas with my spotty internet and didn't think of checking in to the actual town. Well, here I am, five months later with a few shots from some of the most beautiful views I captured during my visit to Stockholm. Monteliusvägen is a gorgeous walking area about a quarter-mile long that shows gorgeous views of historic buildings, the glistening water and gorgeous homes and businesses surrounding the area. We arrived to the country at a good time during the summer, although they are known to have sudden changes in the weather in the middle of the day where it'll begin raining with thunderstorms out of nowhere. This day in particular served us well. One of the pictures was taken from the water because my lovely uncle and cousins gave us a tour around the city with their boat. It was a magical experience and I could not stop taking photos. If you visit Sweden and want to avoid the cold, visit during July (when they celebrate Midsommar) or August...just bring an umbrella.

There were five elements to see at the Royal Palace that were still open during our visit…read more The changing of the guard/marching band on Wednesday at 12:15pm was free. We arrived about half an hour to secure our spot. The event lasted for half an hour and was a mixture of ceremony, band marching and playing and some history about the tradition and the regiment of guards. The highlight of our visit. One tip that worked for us was to split the visit of the palace itself and the changing of the guards. When we visited the rest of the palace the day after there just wasn't that many people. The chapel was free to enter and was located on the second floor opposite of the entrance to the treasury. It wasn't as large or ornate as other palace chapels we've visited. The treasury showcased many crowns, scepters, keys, orbs and other objects used by past and current royals. Placards in English was available just after the ticket desk. We saw everything in around 20 minutes. Tre Kronor museum was located underground in the remains of the previous palace that burned down in 1697. The artifacts were limited but the signage throughout was helpful in context. Near the end was a movie about the fire and construction of the replacement palace. The Royal Apartments had the first and second floors open for viewing but not all of it. Most rooms were darkened for preservation but the White Sea Room (last available room on the second floor) was our favorite as it was so much more inviting. Since the tour deadends on each floor, one has to backtrack the same way to exit. Next time we're in town we'll go to Drottingham and compare palaces.

Stockholm's tiniest statue, Järnpojken is "little boy" and he sits in a small courthard. He is only…read more6 inches tall, sitting on a small table on a metal plate. Different times of year will find him dressed in appropriate clothing for current events or the weather. Knitted scarves are popular as are sunglasses. The statue dates back to 1967 by artist Liss Eriksson and it was originally titled, "The Boy Who Looks at the Moon." Rubbing his head bestows good luck as does leaving a small gift. This was a very nice panoramic vista of Stockholm and easy to access! We parked just down the…read morestreet and walked up the road until we reached the rocky hill, then it was time to off road a bit until you end up on top of the hill and get rewarded with the view of the city and the water. This is the highest natural point in central Stockholm. From here enjoy the Saltsjon and the Gamla Stan side of Stockholm. You can even see the iconic steeple of Riddarholmskyrkan in the distance. There's plenty of space to sit and relax, even bring a picnic, or just take lots of photos. Just down the street there's cafes and a little playground for the kids to get their energy out before piling everyone back in the car. Definitely a nice little stop.

This is a great viewpoint of Stockholm and definitely a hidden gem…read more It's a short little walk up a gravel road and then a few rocks, probably only a quarter of a mile. It's walkable from the subway as well. Once you get to the top, there's a great view looking back to the main island of Stockholm and Gamla Stan. There are also some good views of houses of Södermalm. You won't find this on many lists of things you should do in Stockholm and it's a little off the beaten path, but it's definitely worth seeing. I highly recommend stopping here while in Stockholm.

Once they were open, it took a long time between us being given menus to finally getting our food- 50 minutes. They should've given us our side while we were waiting for the board. We ordered a side of salami and Swedish cheese and the hairy pig board. I enjoyed the side, but the board not so much. The board consisted of wild boar sausage with broche bun, wild boar taco, peppercorn fries, and wild boar lasagna. The board was quite heavy and salty. I didn't have enough stomach space to even try the taco. I did enjoy the fries, but it's not enough for me to want to return.

This place is tucked below street level and is very intimate and downright cozy with its low beam wood ceiling, wood tables in every cranny it can fit to accommodate guests, and a tiny little bar. You can find this place outside by the wooden sign with the boar on it, then simply peer down into the low window and if you see a hairy pig nomming on a sausage, congratulations! You're in the right place. We stopped in not long before closing time and that was probably the only reason we were able to get a much coveted table. The barkeep was nice and let us put in a quick order while also getting us drinks. Unfortunately for me, there were not very many gluten free tapa options on the menu, but there were a few naturally gf. The salami and sausages were thought to have gluten so I went with the smoked shell on shrimp, a cheese dip, and some salad with olives. I wasn't crazy about the smoked shrimp but the olives and cheese were good. The husband enjoyed a sausage in bun which he said was great. Overall we liked the vibe and I think if you can eat the locally sourced meats like my husband it's probably a pretty solid place. If you're gf or allergy you'll probably still be hungry at the end of the meal like I was.

Riddarholmen forms one of the more attractive views of Stockholm's old town when looked upon from…read moreSodermalm, with the gorgeous Riddarholmskyrkan rising impressively to dominate the skyline. In truth, it's main attraction is itself - there are no cafés or restaurants to draw the visitor - just a series of amazing views across the bay towards the City Hall, where two attractive statues can also be found to frame your pictures, one of which is Birger Jal, the apparent founder of the city. It's a peaceful spot, once the busy arterial road from Gamla Stan is crossed - probably the quietest part of the city, apart from Djurgarden of course. There are also a number of impressive old buildings and former palaces to take a look at. But the main appeal of Riddarholmen is to be looked upon from afar, or to look afar from. Definitely worthy of an hour's diversion from Gamla Stan itself. But make sure that you're not looking for somewhere to eat or to drink!
