The Vasa Museum on Djurgården in Stockholm is a 15-20 minute walk from the harbor. This is where the famous warship Vasa is, the ship that sank after a 14-15 hundred meters on its maiden voyage. August 10, 1628 and was raised from the bottom in 1961 after 333 years underwater. The ship is the world's best preserved 17th century ship and consists of about 98% original parts. You walk over several floors and can admire and speculate about how they could make such a ship at that time. You get the whole story by looking and reading the information plates. They have had a copy of the ship made in 1:10, which took 5 years and 12,000 working hours, while the original took about 2 years, started in 1626 and was finished in 1628. Most of the paintings are Swedish artists I have never heard of but here and there were some names that I did recognize. Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet and Paul Cézanne. There is a large Asian exhibit, a display of jewelry (brooches, bracelets and rings), pocketwatches, and much more. Expect two hours at minimum, a half day if you truly want to see everything. First, it needs to be noted that the museum was created with a large amount of support from the band, so it's had an incredibly positive spin put on the story that's told - especially when you realize the group hated touring and both couples divorced during it's run. My favorite part were the costumes, which were incredibly interesting to see up close but the space was quite crowded and poorly designed for crowd control. The lobby was flashy with lights and music, but after entering the museum it felt like window dressing to try and make the experience look better than it is. So is the museum worth the $34 usd ticket cost? In my opinion no. It's overhyped and rather unpleasant when it's busy, but if you're a fan I could see it being worth it to you, if not just to get a closer look at ABBA's fabulous costumes.

After entering we decided to walk the path up to the park instead of buying a ticket for the funicular. It took roughly 10 minutes on a slight incline. Skansen was huge and does take time to go from place to place. Initially we wandered from building to building and many were not staffed or only viewable from the outside. While it was interesting to read the posted signs it wasn't too interesting. At the Oktorp farmstead, we finally found the first staffed location and got to see and learn about dying of yarn. Here we also learned which buildings were staffed and from that point forward gave us a plan of how to tackle Skansen and made the visit much more enjoyable. We had a great conversation about politics in the People's House which was very appropriate and compared it against present day in both our countries. Many parallels. We learned more about typical farm life in the Skane Farmstead while stooping low inside the house and that led to the Delsbo Farmstead. Delsbo was quite the opposite as it was ornately decorated with detailed wall paintings paid for by the well to do family per the staff. I highly encourage anyone visiting to engage with the staff as they were very enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge of the period or activities that went on in that particular farmstead, building, church, etc. We skipped seeing all the animals they kept towards the back of Skansen as well as the aquarium. Overall spent over 2 hours here and likely could've spent more if more buildings were staffed and open. Glad the weather held throughout our visit.

When we visited last week, I was really blown away by an exhibit made up of works from their permanent collection: "Pink Sails: Swedish Modernism in the Moderna Museet Collection." I wasn't familiar with too many Swedish artists, so it was a pleasure to explore this exhibit and experience art that was new to me! The museum is open late (until 8pm on Tuesdays and Fridays), which was great for us - it let us tag on a visit to the museum at the end of a full day of touristing around Gamla Stan. The museum is gorgeous, very modern, with a great gift shop, cafe, and restaurant. A really beautiful museum and well worth visiting if you're interested in modern and contemporary art.

We can recommend it, too, because it's informative and engaging in a way that is different from academic or national history museums. TIP do attend one of the staff talks TIP Travel to Djurgården, a destination in and of itself, via ferry, if convenient. We took ferry 82 from Djurgården, behind the Backstage Cafe next door to the Abba Museum, to Slussen using our SL multi-day pass; very nice.

The museum has several levels and well layout and organized. Staff are everywhere and friendly. On top level, there is a restaurant overlook the city. The view is just amazingly breathtaking, service is great. Foods and drinks are also good too. On street level, before you leave the museum, a small but plenty of variety of shops for shopping. There are several exhibitions throughout the year and they're all fantastic. Love this museum.

This building was converted and reinvented from a former train station to a museum. The tour was detailed and moving. I heard the history of the museum and of the many people that they honored. I was moved by The Nobel Field located on the second floor. There, each winner have their life story and their contribution on a screen surrounded by lights. When you touch the screen, you can hear each story, lives, speeches, of each Nobel Laureate. I was in awe. The lights throughout the field move. I was drawn to the Martin Luther King Jr exhibit. Dr. King won the prize 1964 for peacefully protesting the lack of civil rights for Black Americans. Former President Barack Hussein Obama was the recipient in 2009. We had an "Oslo Pass" which included the price of entrance. The staff answered questions and were engaging. I would definitely come back here.

The museum itself has free entrance but a ticket is required to go to cosmonova (some sort of planetarium film thing, I suppose) so we stick to the exhibition only. Even that, there are so many to choose from and we wouldn't be done in one day, so we chose to go to the polar region and the Swedish nature. Both exhibitions are very entertaining and educational. I got to know a lot more that I thought I already know about these two regions and when you're in Sweden, you have to check out how big a moose actually is (yes, I have never seen one for real) or that how fluffy and white arctic fox is - especially if you have a fjällräven bag :) (good thing that the fox itself is only just a logo in the bag!) A must go for a science lover like me.
