SHOTWELL -- I camped at a lean-to at Showell camp grounds. The shelter was great, had plenty of space for my queen sized bed and my double seater folding chair. I used my small portable generator for power/lights. Wood purchased at the ranger station seemed to burn better than any wood I found around the campsite so I used purchased wood to start camp fires then used wood found around camp. What I didn't like was the shower facilities are at another camp entirely, Lake Ocquittunk, and that kind of sucked especially when I went looking for it at night. It's about 6 miles away but it gave me the opportunity to pull off at the gas station for some snacks, still it's location is super inconvenient. This place is great for winter camping and although the shelters are relatively close to each other, it's so cold that nobody is out bothering anyone. I plan on visiting this place in the summer to see how the tent sites are but I'll bring a portable toilet since the bath rooms are relatively far from the better more private camp sites. read more

Stokes State Forest located in Norhern New Jersey is 16,000 acres of preserved natural habitat. It is composed of deciduous trees mainly oak, maple and beech, as well as, various pines and firs. The Appalachian Trial runs through Stokes which has an elevation of 1,653 at Sunrise Mountain Overlook, a far cry from western mountains which range from 7,000' to 20,000+ feet. There is an entrance fee after Memorial Day and which continues to Labor Day. The fee is collected at a toll booth near the Visitors Center. The week day fee is $5 for N.J. residents and $10 for all others. Weekend fee are $10 and $20. Lots of information can be gathered at the Visitors Center including: informaton on camping, boating, swimming, hunting, fishing and hiking trails which are numerous. In the off-season entrance to the Stokes State Forest is free. Camping sites have picnic tables, tented areas, fire rings and some furnished cabins which during the summer require reservations. The Tillman Ravine Natural Area has steep slopes and waterfalls while the Shotwell area has an extensive trail system. Stony Lake has a pavilion and restrooms. This is a bear habitat area and precautions should be taken to the extent that they can be. Fortunately, New Jersey has only a black bear population. There are no Grizzley bears. read more

We have camped in the lean-tos several times during the winter. The park is very peaceful And the lean to sites feel very private even though they are close together. The bathrooms are kept clean and are centrally located. There are plenty of restaurants nearby if you don't want to manage food because of bears and wild life. We have stayed a few times in the winter and never a tent site. read more

Came for group camping for July 4th weekend. The camp grounds are amazing. Although the maximum capacity for my site was 25, the clearing could easily fit 50 people or 100 to be honest. We were surrounded by trees which gave us the nature feel we wanted without it being too "woody" for us. There were a lot of mosquitos and other bugs around but I only got 1 bite my whole trip so I guess they don't bite much. Love that there are 2 fire pits and 2 grill stations that each have 2 grills. Lots of space to cook so we never had to take turns waiting for food. We also really enjoyed the lakes near us. Some people went fishing and caught some dinner at one lake while a few of us were able to bring our kayak to a different lake and have some fun. The main issue was that the bathrooms and showers are pretty dirty and the showers barely worked, no water pressure at all. Most of my group ended up just wiping themselves down with wet wipes instead. Our neighbors were also obnoxiously loud all night but the camp office is so far away, you can't expect them to know about it. Everyone in my group liked this campsite and would definitely come again. read more

THIS PARK IS BEAUTIFUL! I went for a hike two days after a rain storm so it was slippery and a good challenge. I took a star away because there are a lot of trails to choose from and most of them arent clearly marked on the map or on the trail. It was kind of confusing to get around. Spent a holiday weekend here camping on Lake Ashroe and thought the campgrounds were very luxurious! The parking lot was literally at the entrance to our campsite which made setting up a breeze, as well as keeping food and toiletries sealed off away from bears. There are 8 grills, two fire rings, and about 6 poles to hang garbage bags from. There was a potable water station and the water was cold and delicious. There was a large structure with a roof, about 8 picnic tables, and outlets - perfect for big communal meals or hiding from the sun. We decided to make some ridiculously elaborate meals and had enough space and outlets for multiple stoves, a food processor, a dish washing station, etc. We were not able to find a switch for the overhead electrical lights there, so if you want to see at night bring lanterns, but know that the bugs will be on ya! There were three bathrooms, all with soap, toilet paper, and paper towels that were refilled by awesome park rangers every morning. Finally the showers: were air conditioned! They have a seat/shelf attached to the walls and a hook on the back of the door so your stuff stays dry. There's a large dumpster at one end of the parking lot for trash. The campsite is also a 5-10 minute drive from bars, restaurants, and stores. So if you forget something or run out of something it's no big deal. Peter's Village and the town of Lafayette are close drives if you want to wander through some cute shops and see some artwork. The forest itself is beautiful, lake Ashroe offers kayaks to rent if you don't have your own (there is no swimming at this lake but there is at another nearby). I hiked the maple trail to the white trail to the Appalachian trail. The Maple trail is pretty overgrown and not very well maintained, but it's not a big deal. The views from the ridge of the mountain are lovely, but was told they're better in winter when there is less foliage. There are mosquitoes, we did spot one tick, one snake, a chipmunk, and multiple large daddy long legs. No booze allowed and dogs must be leashed, but if you behave no one bothers you. read more

I loved this place because my family used to go a couple times every spring/summer. I last went August of 2021 and it was kind of a sad sight. As nostalgic as it is while walking through the forest on the trails I remember walking on almost 10 years ago, the place where we used to swim and have fun is no longer open. Grass growing out of the sand, no more playground, no more lifeguard, no more people. It was sad too see that my favorite place growing up is now gone in the past. I'm assuming the water was not safe for us to swim so I guess it is what it is. But overall the place is great to go for adventures. read more

I have been to this state Forest a bunch of times and I really enjoy it. I've been camping here a few times and always stayed at a different site. Each site has a little something different to offer than the others. Some have a lake near them while others are very secluded. I've enjoyed each different site I've stayed at. The hikes here are also really good. My favorite one is tillmans ravine which is actually across the rode from the campground. This hike bring you along and across a stream the runs through the woods. It is an easy but very nice hike to take. read more

Fall camping @ Shotwell (2019) I have special memories of my singlehood days going to the Hashkin's Group Camping Area about 3 times with a large group each time. I persuaded hubby to try camping at Shotwell, campsite T130 on Rosh Hashanah weekend and loved our campground overall. To be fair, will give the pros and cons of the site we were on. * Pros * OUTHOUSES - Good for females who need to relieve themselves quickly! I was surprised that there were actually not just 1 but 2 of them at this site. One is right behind where you could set up your tent and the other is further back. The one closest to our campsite had many rolls of toilet paper in there. FIRE RING - As others have noted, it has an adjustable grill with handles that are coiled so you can use your bare hands to lower or raise it different levels! LANTERN HOOK - Can be used for hanging your gas lantern so you don't burn yourself or for hanging a garbage bag. SPOT FOR TENT - The ground where you can place your tent is not rocky. We used a 10' x 10' 6-person tent (so we could fit our air mattress easily inside) and saw that this ground area is large enough to even fit a group tent that is 12' x 12'. LAKE NEARBY - This campsite is RIGHT next to a large one facing a nice-looking lake. In fact, one good idea a camping group may have is to reserve a bunch of sites facing this lake since it's actually a large open field. WILDLIFE - Saw the following during our time over there: Great Blue Heron, salamanders, chipmunks (tons of them!), Downy or Hairy woodpecker (don't know which one), deer, porcupine (but was roadkill) CELL PHONE RECEPTION - It was decent, hubby and I have AT&T service so we had 3 out of 4 bars. Not too bad, and necessary for emergencies (which we did have - See "Poison Sumac" section below). * Cons * OUTHOUSE CONDITIONS - Although there are 2 outhouses here, they were poorly maintained, looked like they were trashed. This is toilet seat above a pit and no, there is no hand sanitizer dispenser like those port-a-potties you would find at street fairs or apple picking farms. SHOWER HOUSES ARE FAR - We tried going to Stony Lake's but the showers there only trickled cold water. :( We had to go all the way to Lake Ocquittunk's instead to take a shower. We were very grateful that the temperature of the hot showers is JUST right. On the slightly side so you feel completely warm the whole time! And there is a small seat inside of the private shower stall room to place your bag or clothing down and 2 hooks for your towel and other stuff FAR away from where the shower head is so nothing could possibly get wet and you can stay nice and warm between showering and getting your towel. THE ONLY ARTESIAN WELL THAT WORKS IS FAR - One main reason why we chose this site is that we saw on Google maps that there is a water pump located close to our site doesn't work and as we found out through the Stokes Forest office, they haven't been working in years. (!!! :( ) The only one that works is the one that's far down near the intersection of Shotwell Rd. and Struble Rd. where there is some kind of park ranger house and parking lot for employees. (Coordinates are at: https://goo.gl/maps/HfUoTh5esYwUrHvf6). Note: One is NOT allowed to wash one's dishes here which I assume means that you must stock up gallon-sized containers of H20 to wash them at your site in the bushes. MOSQUITOES - Yes, be prepared for them. They are quite sneaky when they bite, you don't really feel them until after you already have been bitten as they aren't very large. (Note: For some reason, I never needed any bug spray for the 3 group camping trips I made over to the Hashkins' tenting areas over 15 years ago. Never understood why, even for the trip where it rained some before and during the time we were there. POISON SUMAC - WARNING: TAKE NOTE TO AVOID MY MISTAKE!!!! Now this ALMOST ruined most of my vacation. When I was collecting small branches for tinder for the campfire, I unknowingly grabbed at a poison sumac bush since its leaves were nearly all gone from it. MY ENTIRE LEGS COVERED IN HIVES THAT WERE LIKE ITCHING HELL AND SPREAD TO THE REST OF MY ENTIRE BODY IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS. Fortunately, my face and scalp were spared and the soles of my feet but it awoke me in the middle of the night in absolute agony. (Lesson learned: DON'T pick just any twigs from anywhere there!) Thankfully, a park ranger at the main office suggested that I use Tecnu wash (which we bought at Walgreens in Newton which was at least a 20 minute drive away from Stokes State Park). But thanks to the internet, I found the best solution is to scrub down also with a ton of baking soda and sea salt to absorb and flush out every bit of oil possible. THANK GOD FOR THE HOT WATER SHOWERS - I was in there for 2 hours in 2 days. It took 2 full days after our trip of scrubbing and rinsing to get rid of all of the poison sumac from me and to heal from the ugly hives and red rash everywhere. read more

Went on a hike while on vacation. Checked out a few trails. The markers and maps around the park are super helpful and Stony lake was gorgeous. Just wished the parks were open but can't complain during times like this. A must visit attraction that will take days to see more and more. Most likely going back very soon! read more

I mean, this is pretty awesome. I went for hiking purposes, but this forest has it all: camping, hiking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing are here along with if you happen to have a horse, you can bring 'em along as well. The forest is massive with lakes, streams, and the Appalachian trail of course. The hike I did was not my favorite. I find that I like climbing rocks not walking on them, and this trail was suuuper rocky. Just a heads up: since people ride horses on the trails, there are huge horse dumps everywhere; be alert or you'll def step in that crap as my fiancee can attest, which was clearly the highlight of the day. $20 for non nj residents and $10 for nj residents for day use which is a bit steep but whatevs, it goes to keeping NJ green, I'm all about it. Definitely another great nature spot in Jerz. read more

Camped at site #1 (per reviewer David's recommendation) and it did not disappoint! Lovely woods on one side, felt quite secluded. Bathrooms were indeed clean, although we were flummoxed by the absence of a camp sink for washing dishes (ranger advised to use bathroom sink or the outdoor water pump, which seemed counterintuitive). We drove to the day area at the lake for a hike. It looked great! Nice swimming area, playground, covered picnic pavilion and ample clean bathrooms. We did the easy Lackner trail (2 miles each way), which was amazingly pretty poison-ivy free around the path - big bonus since I am highly allergic - and had a nice sandstone outcropping just off the trail. Would definitely come back and bring the kids next time! read more

I've been coming to stokes about twice a year for the past 4 years. This place has always been pretty cool, you can hike through the woods, fish, and i think even swim at the lake. We normally stay at groups sites and just get a bunch of people together and go. Your not allowed to bring any alchohol into the campsite, not saying whether or not we have, but your not suppose to. Probably the best memory i have of this place was when a bunch of us rented group site C which is in a row with A-D the people for site A and B didnt show, in site D was the national guard. Well it started rainning and just never stopped for the whole damn weekend! Eventually in the middle of the night we heard a lot of hustle and bustle outside so we went out to look. Apparently the national guard had packed up and was moving out! At that point we figured we were probably screwed but we stayed anyway. Normally the ranger will check on you every now and then. Never gave us a problem usally very friendly. If you were thinking of camping this place it worth it. Pretty cheap too imo. read more

I've stayed here in the cabins and in regular tents. The place is beautiful and depending on where you're located can feel quite secluded. Check in and out times are reasonable and the prices are great. There are bears so just be w smart camper and the chances of encountering one are slim to none. I would definitely recommend this place for a peaceful escape. read more

Do not pick site #16 to tent camp if you don't want groups of people hanging out and walking through your camp site from 6am to 7pm!! We had 0 privacy. We picked it for views of the stream and closeness to bathroom.. instead we got inconsiderate campers from different sites ..15 people at a time . We called and complained and they said they shouldn't be there when the camp site is occupied but they never came down and did anything about it nor did these people care about intruding on our space . Apparently they add fish to the stream water and this is the best spot to fish ( even though there are other options where other non disrespectful folks were ) We came in April ..Easter weekend so trees are not green yet and it was still chilly at night . the ponds, streams and hiking trails are beautiful and all close. the bathrooms and showers are run down. But some bathrooms do have running water. No running water or electricity on the camp sites we had. We ended up moving our camp site to #12 which was super private and huge with no Neighbors in sight... It was on a semi busy road across from pond but my god was it peaceful compared to where we came from. I would definitely recommend this site if you like privacy. Only 3 stars due to neighboring campers and bc we were not warned this was a fishing site... either should not be rented out or there should be a warning about it. They did make up for it by letting us switch sites but it was such a pain to reset up. We have been camping in at least a dozen spots in NJ and PA and this was the most bizarre experience we have ever had. read more

This was one of the best kept, cleanest tent campgrounds I have been to in none tri-state area. My family enjoyed site 1, which was close to restrooms, but totally secluded. Our friends were on site 3, making for an easy connection and shared meals and fire. We hiked the Sunrise Mountain trail and around one of several lakes. This is my kind of roughing it. We stayed a few nights at lean-to site #28 - the site is: - Semi-private: there are nearby sites, but they can't see you and you can't see them. - Rustic: the site is located on gravel and has the typical "amenities" (fire ring with grill and a table) - There's a bathroom located nearby (about 100 yards away). The bathroom was heated, clean, and nicer than the majority of campsite bathrooms that I have been to. - The campsite prohibits alcohol (I cannot confirm or deny if our beverages contained alcohol). If you are discreet about it, you won't have any issues. - The lean to is a no frills cabin with a wood burning stove inside (there was even a lock on the door). We had 3 guys and could have fit a 4th (I don't know how they allow up to 6 people). Be sure to bring a sleeping pad or air mattress. - We hiked on Tibbs Trail near the lake (its a short linear trail, not a loop). - Reservation for a lean to is $35/night (NJ resident) or $40/night (non-NJ resident) on reserveamerica.com read more

Your eyes aren't deceiving you. I went camping. And this isn't the first time I've ever gone camping, before, either. So there. Alright, so I'm not the most avid camper - but I do have hiking shoes and a sleeping bag. This particular camp site happens to be my favorite (of the two I've been to) because I like the grounds, they're fairly well kept, the park rangers aren't all up in your business, and if you're up for it, there are plenty of places to go hiking, wandering, splashing around. One thing I've noticed is, there can be some weird people at the different sites. I'm sure they say the same thing about us, but every time I've been here there's either some weird religious group chanting or some "unsavory" characters. This weekend cars kept flying up and down the road playing "La Cucaraca" on their car horn. It was strange. read more

Nice place. Stayed at site T218 at Steam Mill in May. There weren't many other people at the time. I wouldn't call it "secluded", but it was better than some other places. Could easily see car and tent of next door neighbor, and would easily see people across the road if they were there. The sites are about 45 yards apart according to my GPS. Site is 65 yards uphill from Big Flat Brook, which is beautiful and nice to sleep with the sound of. Strangely there weren't any mosquitos at the campsite, but there were a lot when we visited Raymondskill Falls. Bathrooms are regular toilet seats over a hole in the ground. No running water. (Keeps the annoying loud people away.) There's an artesian well you can drink from. Since it isn't on Google Maps: North entrance is at 41.24107° N, 74.73434° W Well water is at 41.23935° N, 74.73587° W Bathrooms are at 41.24023° N, 74.73630° W There are a few honor system firewood places along Grau Rd, such as 41.22676° N, 74.76985° W $5 for a bundle. Also note that Crigger Road is one-way. Didn't see any bears. read more

Just spent a weekend camping here and i left, well a happy camper! Our group reserved Ste 20 in Lake Ockuittunk weeks in advanced through Reserve America. By the way i highly recommend using that site, it gives a descriptions of each campground and availability dates. We first had to go to the main entrance of Stokes and check in. The woman behind the desk was very sweet and helpful. Gave us great directions to our camp site. PRO TIP: The office does sell firewood for 7 dollars but as you drive to your campsite, some of the locals have firewood outside their house for 5 dollars, using the honor system. This comes in handy when the office closes at 4pm. When we arrived we were happy to see that we had privacy and our campsite had more then enough room. Each site comes with a picnic table and fire ring. There is a bathroom within walking distance, its a pit toilet, and it was foul. There are bathrooms located just at the entrance of the camp site, about a 2 min drive. Those bathrooms have showers also, and are more up to date. Our site was close to the blue mountain trail. Its about 1.4 mile and has pretty scenery. There is no end view there, at the end of the hike you end up on a road with a deserted barn. Other hikes you would have to drive to, but the drive is short less then a mile. There are quiet hours from 10pm - 8am. And everyone in the area respects it. People did have there fires going past 10pm but no one was being loud. Park rangers are constantly driving around the area to monitor things. Alcohol is not allowed because it is a state forest. I am not saying if we brought any or did not. Besides tent camping, they have cabins for rent, lean to's and rv camping. read more

Stokes goes down as one of my favorite, easy-to-do car camping places. I've been going here a few times a year for a couple years now, and it's always been an adventure--in the best way possible. We generally come as a group, minimum of 10 people staying at the 30 person group sites. The rangers are generally very hands off and unintrusive (unless you are an idiot and attracting attention to yourselves), and the sites are pretty well maintained. The bathrooms and showers are surprisingly clean as well. The only reason I cannot give this five stars is because you aren't really in the wilderness. The noise of rt.206 near by at night can detract from the "wilderness" aspect of it all, but all in all a great place to go. read more

I came here camping/hiking a random weekend in March and loved it. Since it was early in the season the campsites were relatively open, and the ability to reserve online is very convenient. When I called the office to say I'd be missing my first night, they actually moved my reservation by a day so that I wouldn't have to leave until the evening on my second day! The staff here is always very friendly and knowledgeable too. We ended up staying at Lake Ocquittunk Site 7, which was right along the lake with a short walk to the bathroom, and close to some trails. A warning though is that some of the trails have been changed around since the last time my map (NYNJ Trail Conference) was made and it got a bit confusing - stick to the major ones and you'll be fine. If you have a chance to hike to the appalachian trail from there you'll see some gorgeous views too! Overall had a great experience here! read more

Crazy Bernie camped only once as a child. Stokes was where it was! The father took all 3 of us boys one weekend dragging a tent trailer to this awesome place in "the woods". I was around 6 because I remember very little. I do remember that the food he made sucked and it all started at breakfast. He must have taken all the partially empty cereal boxes and mixed them together. He made milk from powder that wasn't even cold and poured the sick shit fluid over this crappy mix of stale cereal and made me eat it. This is my only memory of my time at Stokes. I hope to camp here as an adult before I die but I live 3000 miles away now read more

Been to stokes several times always in winter as it's one if few parks that's open year round. Stayed for 3 nights last week - first day record high temps second days crazy rain. The park is well managed and exceptionally maintained. Hiked Tillman ravine and buttermilk falls - about 4 plus round trip but worth it. Suggestions if you stay in a lean too - bring a broom to sweep up - you'll need a cot or bedding - the lean too's are sparse a camp table and chairs are in order - suggest ax to spilt wood for stove. The park offers endless hiking and recreational opportunities - jumbo land dinner has solid breakfast. I'll be back again. read more

Stokes state forest is one of the most beautiful places I have EVER seen, and I've been around, kiddo! I can't remember when the first time was that I came here, certainly my dad drove through the park with us in the late 1960's, around the time the Tocks Island Dam was planned to be built. (Look it up, it is an interesting piece of history. http://delawarewatergap.org/TOCKS_ISLAND_DAM_PROJECT.html, the lake that the dam would have created would have been about 25 miles long and would definitely have affected this landscape). I like to come here on weekdays and in the off-season, when i often get the whole park to myself. I enjoy winter camping in the closed lean-to's. They are equipped with woodburning stoves so you can keep warm. THERE ARE BEARS HERE so you must behave with respect, and follow the long list of rules and tips provided by the forest service! These rules were created to protect both humans and bears! All the trails are different, with different scenery and different levels of walking ease. If you love nature, botany, biology, geology, trees, rare wildflowers, streams, this place is for you! There is also an artesian spring where many locals line up with jugs to collect drinking water. Be aware that hunting goes on here, so you ought to call the office because I can't find any dates online when hunting season actually is. Be safe and wear red! read more

We had campsite 108 at Shotwell Campground. It was a beautiful, very private site, surrounded by forest and close to the flush-toilet bathroom. There were no showers, but we did use the Stokes Group Campground showers which is just a 5 minute drive, and also swam in the Delaware River every day. Shotwell is a very quiet, beautiful campground. We didn't have any problem with bears, and the campground actually provides a food locker which is nice. Firewood from the camp office is $7, but there are places nearby that sell it for cheaper. We were able to do some biking on the country roads in the area, hiking in Stokes and High Point, as well as lots of swimming. There are a few ice cream shops, lots of diners and roadside fruit and veggie stands. We did most of our grocery shopping at the Walmart in Port Jervis. Only complaints are: 1. Sound of the highway can be heard every so often when a motorcycle or very loud truck goes by. 2. The water spickets in the campground weren't working when we were there (July 4th weekend) due to a broken water pipe, so we had to wash dishes in the bathroom, and fetch water from the "depot" which is close to the entry to Shotwell campground.
