He recommended a particular approach and materials (but was amenable to customer preferences) and discussed pros/cons (options for a rain diverter; shingles vs tar or whatever the other roofing surface was). He's licensed, insured and a hard worker who arrived on time, then worked steadily all through the day. I was equally impressed that he was respectful of my home (wiped his boots when entering the house; quickly shut the door on a cold winter day while we discussed the project; didn't want to sit down because he had been outside on the roof, sawing wood, waterproofing, laying shingles -- things like that). He wanted to go in the attic and I said it wasn't really big enough for him to go into it just like a crawlspace where he could see. The entire process was remarkable in that, unlike others, Dave kept his appointments on schedule. He personally inspected the roof and delivered a review of his proposal in tremendous detail. He has a warehouse with all of the material he needed for my roof, so no excuses about shipping delays, cost escalations or backorders. He promised a mid May installation and actually came a week early. He even got the building permit from the Town, which some other contractors seem to forget.
