Screwfix

Screwfix first became famous for their mail order business. But with delivery charges at £5,…read moresometimes that is not economical, Thankfully they have opened up branches of counters. 135 in all in the UK, Peterborough is just one of them. Think Wickes meets Argos and you wil have a good idea of what this place is like. To purchase anything, they have catlogues on benches. You fill in a slip with the part number and quanitity of what you want. You then pay at a desk where they check the stock level and then await it to arrive at another counter, a la Argos. It is handy and quiet useful, as if they do not have the item in stock, they will tell you when it is due in and you can pay and reserve the item there and then. Pricewise, they tend to be very competitive compared to the nearby Wickes store and are cheaper than Homebase. They also keep almost anything you would want from a builder's merchants, including work wear and sat navs. I use the website to see prices and then if they are the, most competitive, drop by and get the article I am interested in.
It is excellent that there is a Screwfix on the outskirts of Peterborough. I can look at what I…read morewant from the comfort of my own home on the internet and then pop straight there and get it. It saves on the delivery charge and means that I can get it straight away. The staff are always very helpful there and advise on what you need for the particular job that you are doing. I thought I needed a certain item and they advised that actually a less expensive item would do just fine and would possibly work even better for my needs. I recommend other people visiting here if they need anything for DIY!

I genuinely have yet to make up my mind about Lakeland despite being a shopper here for over 6…read moreyears. Let me explain. Inside this store, you will find lots of kitche and home aids that you won't find in many other places in UK. A lot of them are from the USA, but unless you travel ther or have a friend or family meber who will pick things up for you, this a good place to get those special items. So on that front Lakeland is great. However, when I enter here, why do I feel like I am attending a WI meeting? Probably it's the staff. They tend to look at me, a man, and assume I don't know anything about cooking or housekeeping and that I must be in here on an errand for someone else. This feeling hasn't gone away despite me going in here many times. I still enjoy shopping here, the staff are quite knowledgeable and helpful despite being mildly patronising. Lakeland is not particularly cheap, actually it can be very expensive, but then neither are the alternatives of John Lewis or Westage Kitchenware departments cheap either. I would say that Lakeland runs a successful shop as it is well laid out and does offer good service at a cost of a little bit more that the others.

Stout Ceramics always do a good job of our tiles in our house…read more We had them tile the hallway, cupboard, cloakroom, bathroom & en-suite when we moved into our house (November 2009) and they did a great job. We provided the tiles, but Ben did the work in a day and only charged somewhere in the region of £220 (labour/grout). He did such a good job that we recently had them back to replace the grouting on the kitchen tiles (which the house builders had put in before we moved in), and he did a good job of that without damaging any of the original tiles. Highly recommended family run business.
