It's a bummer to write this review, but this nursery has really declined over the past ten years. I used Stonewall Nursery extensively when I landscaped the grounds of my first house back in 2003. Though the prices were higher than most of the nurseries in the Madison area, this nursery carried a lot of unique trees and shrubs and the quality of their stock was second to none. In addition, the grounds were in immaculate condition with some breathtaking examples of shade gardens that were truly inspirational. Fast forward to the current day and things have slipped badly. The current variety of trees and shrubs is not what it used to be. I can find many of those same items closer to Madison at a lower price and in better condition. The display area is not well-maintained (lots of weeds) and is poorly organized. The bright spot is the staff. They remain friendly and knowledgeable. I used to look forward to my spring visits to Stonewall, but now, I really do not have a need to visit anymore. read more

Peter has been very helpful at Stonewall and I am very satisfied. He has a really good understanding of what he has growing, and usually has something planted in his yard that he can point out so know what the tree will look like when it is mature. I always find something unique-- when I am shopping for landscape trees, I always add Stonewall to my list of places to stop. We have gone here for about 6 years when needed and have had much success with our purchases. read more

I'm a degreed landscape architect and plant lover and I can say unequivocally that Stonewall is back to great form and has an awesome selection that goes beyond the high-volume run of the mill cultivars. Peter is very knowledgeable, his plants are healthy, and he won't sell you a plant that won't work in your spot. I shop the big nurseries in Milwaukee, Madison and even Chicago for my projects and I'll drive 200 miles for a particular plant. Most of the time I don't need to however, because Stonewall has a great collection and the right advice to make sure I don't make a purchase error. read more

I visited this nursery 5 or 6 years ago. There were two owners then and the one I dealt with was personable and extremely knowledgeable and helpful - the selection was excellent and he showed off spectacular display gardens he maintained including shade and rock gardens. The nursery was organized and a pleasure to shop. I returned this year and what a change! Apparently the partner who managed the display gardens was no longer there. The display beds were weedy and most of the really interesting plants gone. Weeds were rampant in the sales area, there were DEAD PLANTS in the sales area and no organization. It was messy and hard to find anything, many conifers were root-bound and in bad shape. An enormous disappointment - I will continue to shop the tremendous, high quality selection at Rich's Foxwillow Pines in Woodstock, IL for the best in conifers. read more

I visited Stonewall for the first time this year and was amazed at the wonderful selection of unique and stunningly beautiful specimen trees. Peter and another gentleman spent over an hour walking me through their yard and telling me all about the growth habits, seasonal interest, and care requirements of each tree. When I finally decided on a lovely korean pine silver ray, they helped me select the healthiest, best shaped one, wrapped the root ball in new burlap, and carefully loaded it into my car for me. I also really enjoyed the rustic wilderness setting of the nursery. The landscaping was absolutely beautiful and inspiring. The whole experience was very positive. I don't know how their prices compare to other nurseries, but I thought my tree was reasonably priced, especially in consideration of the assistance I received from the staff. Besides, I prefer to support a small local business whenever possible. I only wished I knew about Stonewall sooner...I am running out of room in my yard! read more
