It's a great spot to enjoy the weather, the ocean, but mostly.. for people-watching. The beach was also surprisingly clean in spite of the huge crowd on a random mid-August weekend. Grandma Hilly tells me that if you walk down a little, there's also a nude beach.

There is a long clean beach where you can sunbathe, or the more adventurous can try out some of the watersports on offer. Also for the adventurous there is bungee jumping from the tower on the end of the pier. Behind the beach there is a Sea Life centre that is supposed to be good, although I haven't been there. There are lots of cafes and restaurants on the streets behind the beach, as well as quite a few nice ice cream shops. It is quite a touristy place but it's still a nice place to visit. If you are visiting Scheveningen over New Year then you can take part in the Nieuwjaarsduik (New Years Dive) on New Years Day , when there is a swim in the North Sea. In the summer there are weekly fireworks displays.

Which by the way, I finally experienced for 1 full week in the middle of June after having visited the Hague 3 times thus far this year. It's perfect for running either on the boardwalk or on the beach along the North Sea. However, if you do opt for a beach run, be prepared to trek lightly across a wide body of soft sand before getting to the wet-firm sand, otherwise you'll have loads of sand in your running shoes! I'd also suggest running in the early mornings so you can practically have the entire beach to yourself, including a view of the sun rising and if you are lucky, maybe even a view of a chariot rider with his/her horse galloping along, it makes the run that much more enjoyable IMO (coming from a person who has never lived in a town with an easily accessible beach)! Not only does this beach offer a scenic run, you can do lots of other outdoor activities (e.g., biking, rollerblading, kite surfing, fishing by the red & green lighthouses, beach volleyball, regular beach stuff, amusement rides on the pier) and plenty of dinning options literally right on the sand, with cabana-type patio seating. Weather permitting, I am totally visiting this beach again when I am in town!

But, I do like this beach better than it's next door neighbor Zandvoort. Bloemendaal aan Zee is nicer because there is much more room on the sand to spread out. It is not all covered by chairs that are owned the the cafés that you have to pay to sit in. I find that there are more Dutch people and less tourists here. Also, Bloemendaal has a lot of the popular beach clubs so when you are on the beach you can hear the music from the clubs. Just sit in front of whichever club you like the music best from. If you walk a bit further down, you also have wide open beach, no clubs, stores, cafés, chairs, or umbrellas, this can also be nice as well depending what you are in the mood for. Lastly, you have much better looking people at this beach than Zandvoort. Instead of fat tourists, grandpa in a speedo, or kinds running around wildly, you see more of a young adult crowd here.
