It was based at a local middle school, so I figured it was legit. My daughter was enrolled for 3 days before we pulled her out of the program. On the surface, when we arrived, the program seemed lackluster - I wasn't provided the basic orientation information before our first day of camp, it wasn't clear what my kid would be doing or any of the basics of what to bring or expect. I'm used to peppy camp counselors with name tags and clipboards, helping to shepherd kids where they need to go, and helping the littles feel comfortable. There was none of this. It was held in the library of a middle school (I hope they went outside, but I'm not really sure), and seemed disorganized. But I figured that at worst, it would be a boring but benign 2 weeks of summer. My kid is pretty outgoing, so I figured, what's the worst that happens - it's located at public middle school, it's got to be legit, maybe just underfunded. At least they have field trips?... But then my daughter fell and hit her head and gashed her eye, and the staff did not call me. I didn't find out until pickup, and when I arrived, they told me that it was because they were not given the emergency numbers from the central office, and they were not able to reach the central office. I have worked with children in many places across my career - I have been a camp counselor, and this seemed absolutely implausibly unsafe. I immediately withdrew my kid from the program - called and left a voicemail that I was filing a complaint and initiated a refund through ActivityHero. But that's when the fun began. I didn't hear from anyone until the next morning/afternoon, and really not until I called back saying I was going to file a complaint with the City of Millbrae. But getting in touch with CAM EDU was surprisingly difficult. Firstly, there is no number for parents to reach staff at the summer camp where the kids are. I was only able to reach the phone number of a central hotline, which was rarely answered by a human--I got more response from chat bots/emails. Then, I realized that there are no academic staff listed on their website - the faces I recognized from the summer camp had titles like "Website developer", which made me pretty nervous - who is taking care of my child? The person who was alleged "camp director" isn't listed as staff on the website. And all staff on the website are listed without a last name, so there's no way to actually confirm their identity or role with the company. When I heard back from CAM EDU, I was put in touch with their General Manager/HR person, who is based abroad and has never seen their facility herself. However, she was very understanding, and provided an immediate full refund. But this still doesn't excuse an academic site where the administrators are not involved in the day-to-day programs. The entire company appears to be run through Google Voice phone numbers, and it gave the impression that there is in-fact no central office (the business address routes to a work/live loft in Millbrae), and does not follow basic safety protocol. There was no way I was going to let my kid go on a field trip with them. I now have more questions around the validity of the business, who the owners are, and who were the adults present. I strongly encourage other parents to do their own due diligence before sending their children to this camp.

It was my words against their words without a written contract. The regional director told me as "doing me a favor to be down at the office to meet with me". This was a very arrogant statement. As you can imagine, after they take your money, all courtesy is out the window. My suggestion is to go somewhere else where you can don't have to buy the package in advance. This way it can ensure the quality of services that your kid receives.

All of a sudden, before the school starts, the receptionist told me that my kids can't continue the Tuesday session with Philip anymore because I didn't respond to the email they sent to me. The Tuesday spots my kids have are given to other students. However, there is nothing stated in the email that we as the parents are required to respond to the email if we want to keep the same schedule, or if we didn't respond to the email, our regular session will be given to other students. No one at the center has ever asked my kids if they want to keep the same Tuesday session or switch to a different schedule before or after their tutoring session on Tuesdays. I talked to the center director Norman wang right away, he was very angry and raised up his voice to tell me that your kids have been with Philip for 2 years on Tuesday doesn't mean that they can be with Philip on the same schedule for as long as you want?!! My kids tried to talk to the front desk this evening as well, the front desk person at c2 just told my kids that since your mom didn't respond to the email, we can do whatever we want. I have included the email they sent to me. This is really unfair. I think they treated us this way is because we purchase a big package($16k)from c2 about 2 years ago. Just be very careful parents, if you want to buy tutoring package from c2, pay attention to the hours they subtract as well. A few parents have warned me about this. I will try to talk to the district manager to resolve this issue. Will keep you guys updated as soon as I hear more from the upper management.

Everyone on staff has been incredibly easy and pleasant to collaborate with, and responsive to my questions. The school expanded over the summer to add 2 more classrooms, so that Burkard now has 6 classrooms: K/1, 2/3, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7/8th. Having experienced a few private schools and a public school between my 2 kids, I am confident this is the best environment for my child, for both academic differentiation and SEL support. It's often lamented that parents have to choose the least bad educational option for their 2e kids, but I truly believe this is a great option. We were fortunate enough to be with his amazing 2/3 teachers for 2 years, and have a new set of teachers we love this year, too. Speaking with parents across grades, they also think highly of their teaching teams. My son continues to thrive academically (measured by his overall engagement, as well as MAP testing), and we are very happy with the math differentiation he receives. Each year, I have been pleased with the attention and care the staff takes to make sure he's challenged at the right level. They take great care to plan engaging lessons across ELA, science, social studies and SEL, and incorporate hands on projects regularly to extend their learning. My son regularly shares interesting facts he learned in class! Math is a subject he continues to be passionate about, so I reach out to the school annually for math acceleration. He is given math assessments at the start of each year to determine the appropriate placement, and is given the option of joining a higher level class, or doing independent study in his classroom. We opted this year to have him join the higher level math class on a modified schedule, and we are grateful for the ability to choose the right option for him. The daily SEL teaching is also very well done. Many schools don't have the ability to go in-depth with SEL, but our BT has devised fun games and exercises for the kids to put their SEL knowledge into practice. It was so sweet to hear that my son's 4th grade class taught new recess games to the K/1 class! The BT's keep a close watch throughout the day, so the students are able to learn and play in a physically and emotionally safe environment. When conflicts arise, the staff is there to help the students resolve the issue in an appropriate way. We get daily reports, and twice monthly newsletters sharing what he's learning, so I know he's receiving a high quality education. If your child is at a school that is not meeting their needs, I encourage you to tour the Burkard School. It is truly a gem of a school!

We unfortunately found very little real understanding and expertise along the way, moving from program to program, from school to school, in every case deeply involved with the IEP process. Then we decided to try TBS. The results have been nothing short of amazing. Our student's self-esteem and emotional intelligence started to grow from the start and has continued to grow ever since. No more calls asking us to come quickly, the benefits to our entire household have been pretty incredible, across parents, siblings, and friends alike. When your student talks to you about how the kids at school are 'just like me', when they express a sense of belonging and common purpose to thrive in the face of big emotions, you can only smile and reflect on the journey. ...and imagine what it's like for other parents to understand you, understand your child, and understand so much of the details of the journey. The TBS community, made up of students, teachers, and parents is one that sees your child as deserving, powerful, and good.
