And I have to say I had no idea what I was missing til we stayed at the Garden Cottage this time. From the time we parked and walked through their amazing and vibrant gardens up the the most adorable ivy-covered porch, to being greeted by the most warm and gracious hosts. The parlor is filled with vintage chairs of the most comfortable and interesting variety, the shelves full of books with old classic covers and the smell if years gone by when you open them. The kitchen is full of every delightful china and crystal you've ever seen, and all arranged in honey ways, like someone has very carefully designed every cubby, every wall, and just about every square inch. We stayed in the Morning Glory room, which has a separate entrance from the main house, which in itself is very nice and private. Even better, it's located right next to the backyard garden--through the most beautiful flower-adorned arch you make your way into the fairy tale-like gardens in back, which are exactly as magical as you thought they might be by the gardens in front. Just like everything else in this place, every inch is carefully laid out with the most beautiful flowers and plants, and the most adorable seating, including the perfect vine-wrapped swing. I took the liberty to bring my oil pastels out to the garden this morning to let the sunshine and vibrant scenery inspire me, and I recommend everyone else do the same! There's something about this place that will inspire you to take up colors and try to create something beautiful yourself! I could go on forever about the delicious breakfasts and delightful company, or the room itself and the fine furnishings and adorable flowery asornments, but I feel like I've given you enough now that you need to stay here a few nights and find all of the treasures out yourself!

Upon arrival we were greeted by the owners Brian and Donna and offered a complementary glass of wine. The owners are very personable and excellent hosts willing to help their guests have a memorable experience. We reserved the Lucy Belle room on the first floor which has a separate door to the front porch. This room has a king bed, spacious bathroom with shower. The bed was comfortable, plenty of hot water in the shower and and the room was nicely decorated. The porch is a perfect place to relax overlooking the flower garden. Morning coffee, juices and homemade breakfast is also included. Behind the Inn is the IG winery. Tours and tastings are available. We have previously stayed at other B&B's in the Cedar City but now that we have experienced Iron Gate it will be the first choice on future visits.

Our room was the "Joy Darlene" and featured a king bed and a three-head walk-in shower (tilt the middle head all the way down before turning on the taps!). The breakfast area is charming and opens onto a patio, which would be a lovely place in warmer temperatures for a cool drink. The food is scrumptious and homemade, as befits a quality B&B. Our first breakfast: individual quiches (bacon, cheese, artichoke), cinnamon muffins, fresh fruit, and juices. Our second breakfast: banana bread pudding, sausages, fresh fruit, and juices. You will not leave hungry! The hosts even provide a happy hour at 5pm with wine and appys (we were served bacon wrapped brie-stuffed dates, chips and homemade salsa, crackers/cheeses/meat plate, and jalapeno olives). If you have any food allergies, let the hosts know a few days in advance of your visit and they will modify the menu for you. I am lactose-intolerant and they were gracious enough to make my quiche without cheese and my bread pudding with Lactaid milk. The house is within a few minutes walking distance of Southern Utah University (where the Utah Shakespeare Festival is located during the summer) and the downtown core. Despite this, the evenings were VERY quiet, ensuring a good night's sleep for all. Susan and CR said that they will be opening up a winery in the next couple of months, which will only add to the quality and decadence of this already fine establishment. We plan on visiting again for the Shakespeare festival later this summer and are looking forward to it! Only 1 quibble: although there is wifi available, the connection doesn't seem to work with Apple products.

I stayed at Hilton Vacation Club Cedar Breaks in Brian Head as part of acclimatization before…read moretackling Colorado 14ers. At roughly 10,000 feet, it's an ideal place to adjust to higher elevation. Personally, a long stay here noticeably reduces the effects of altitude, improves my breathing, and translates into about a 30% faster pace for me above 10,000'. Sleeping at 10,000 feet versus somewhere closer to 8,000' isn't a subtle difference, at least in my experience, it's significant. The accommodations felt much more like a compact suite than a typical hotel room, which made the stay especially comfortable. Brian Head, or Cloud Head as we renamed it in conversation (I understand locales with last names, but am not necessarily a fan of those centered around first names) isn't trying to compete with places like Vail or Aspen, and frankly, that's refreshing. It's understated rather than overdeveloped, with a level of peace and quiet that's becoming increasingly rare in mountain towns during summer. Nearby Cedar Breaks is genuinely spectacular and, in my opinion, every bit as beautiful as better-known prime destinations of the West, just without the crowds or self-importance. I'm used to spending extended time above 8,000', so I really appreciated averaging closer to 10,000' throughout my stay. That extra elevation makes a meaningful difference for acclimatization. If you're coming straight from sea level though, expect your body to need time to adjust. The first week or two can be an adjustment, even if you're otherwise fit. As others have noted, this probably isn't the destination for anyone who's uneasy with steep mountain roads, dramatic elevation changes, or a high density of deer casually appearing alongside the roadway. That's simply part of being in the mountains. I've seen complaints about the lack of air conditioning, but honestly, that feels like people applying city expectations to a high-alpine environment. At this elevation, it simply isn't necessary. Crack a window, let the mountain air in, and by nightfall temperatures are usually in the 40s, making for some of the best sleeping weather imaginable. Nearly every staff member I interacted with was friendly, capable, and professional. My only minor criticism is that one younger employee didn't set clear expectations, which created some unnecessary confusion and additional follow-up. It wasn't a major issue, but it stood out because everything else was handled well. Overall, this is an excellent choice if you're looking for a peaceful mountain escape or high-elevation base for hiking, peak-bagging, or spending time outdoors. It attracts people who appreciate the setting for what it is rather than expecting a resort experience, and I would absolutely stay here again.

The road to the hotel is picturesque but can be harrowing, especially at night when there are no lights and deer and antelope (I saw both on the way up) are plentiful. I had emailed the hotel a week before the stay to make sure that our visit--complete with 16' moving truck would not be an issue, but I never received a response. We arrived late but front desk staff was very friendly and got us to our room relatively quickly. The room was spacious but the thermostat was very finicky, resulting in a fitful night of sleep due to the temperature. There are some updates to the room that could be made as it is starting to show its age. A major reason for selecting this hotel during our cross-country move was the spa options, but there the facility fell quite short of the mark. The large hot tub was empty and roped off, the small hot tub was cold, the dry sauna was not operational, and the wet sauna was underwhelming. Staff was notified but it takes quite a bit of time to heat up a hot tub and thus we had to move on to our final destination without the benefits of the hot tub. The gym is incredibly small for a hotel of this size and price point as well. Coffee in the lobby was appreciated and the library/game room is a nice touch as well.

It's a RV park on an industrial site with a warehouse converted to a 'hotel…read more The "resort"amenities two hot tubs that are not working, a swing, a small fire pit, and property with broken down equipment, Continental breakfast consists of a few four-packs of store-bought muffins, a bag of store-bought bagels opened the prior day, bread, pop tarts, and coffee. These amenities are really for RV park users. The hotel rooms are upstairs and were previously offices. No elevator. Walls are very thin. From my room, I could hear all the goings-in in other rooms, including dogs barking and kids yelling. There was a lot of racket, people shouting in the lobby and common rooms downstairs in the evening, so I was afraid to venture out of my room. In the morning, from the hallway, I could actually hear someone snoring. The room was large and had floor rather than carpet, so it was mostly clean. Although there was a small pile of hair on the bathroom floor by the shower. By the way, the shower was not designed well, so much of the bathroom floor got wet after it was used. Also, the toilet did not have a lid! That's unsanitary. For around $250 for one night, I would have been much better off staying at a real hotel in town.
