I love nothing more than to get on my bike and head off for a ride. It doesn't happen as often as I'd like to be honest as I prefer going without the kids because I enjoy the freedom.
When I do go out I tend to take this ride, which would be really great to do with children too. It's not very long, is mostly an easy surface to ride and is flat with no traffic. In fact the only traffic are boats on the canal and other cyclists.
I start at the bridge on Warstock Lane and go down the steps onto the tow path. If you have the bridge behind you, head left and basically follow the canal to the Blue Bell Cider House. To be honest I don't know how long the ride is but it usually takes about an hour to get to the pub and another hour to get home again. You can't miss the pub as it's on your right shortly after a bridge. When you get to Earlswood Club marina, you're almost there.
On the way you will see some lovely scenery, (I've even seen a heron ) once you've passed The Navigation pub and head towards Dickens Heath, where there's some interesting flats over looking the canal.
The Blue Bell Cider House is a great stop off point for a pint and some crisps (see my review of the pub for more details.). I head back after this, but you can easily go further if you want to.
The people you meet along the way are generally lovely and it's a great way to spend an afternoon, with or without the children. read more
