'Ello chaps! Streets Beach is a 17 hectare park located on the Bank of the Brisbane river. It is an absolutely MUST VISIT. There is green space, restaurants, and a FREE man made pool area. There is the large concrete bottom pool that draws quite the crowd in hot weather, as does the neighboring beach (sand bottom) pool There is also a small kids pool and kids water playground. It's FREE! There are public restrooms steps away that give you a free space to change, plus lockers available for rent. It is easy to spend an entire day here, enjoying the public amenities and pool while having quick access to restrooms, lunch spots, and ice cream trucks. Overall I give Streets Beach Five Stars out of Five. It's a MUST VISIT. read more

When people come to visit Brisbane and ask me "what is there to do here?" sometimes I get stumped. I mean, I'm a local and I've got my places to go, but where are the really pop out kind of spots that are worth noting to a tourist? In recent months I've been building a list of "tacky, weird stuff to do" in Brisbane list. Streets Beach is right at the top of this list. A man made beach, complete with sand, life guards and umbrellas- right in the middle of the city! I used to think this beach was horribly tacky and I used to avoid it like the plague. It was always full of little kids who you could trust to pee in the water, or young buff couples getting sexy in the deeper waters. Am I selling this yet? In recent years however, I don't avoid it so much. I've grown fond of strolling down to the beach of a night time for a dip. You can float on your back and gaze out at the skyline, and watch the lights reflect off the water of the river below. It's actually really pretty. Just maybe take care to not put your head under water. You never know what's beneath the surface. Take this as you will. It's open until 10pm of a night time. read more

For someone who just moved to Brisbane, Streets Beach is a fantastic place to go! We came here to kick off our Easter Break and it was just perfect. The weather was lovely and it was nicely crowded. It was not overly crowded which was super nice. I took a few dips in the water but mainly enjoyed sunbathing and enjoying the entire landscape. We asked a girl sunbathing near us if she wouldn't mind watching our things while we take a dip. She kindly said "Yes!" We ended up passing on the kindness when a group of young lads went for a swim. They let us listen to their boombox too! Score. :) This is a great place to take visitors who come into town because this is one of the spots that make Brisbane truly unique. Even people who live by beaches won't have a man made beach in the middle of their city! You don't have to even go in the water. There are plenty of benches and green space where you can sit and enjoy the space. The river is right in front of you so you can also go for a nice stroll. They had several tents set up where you could go shopping as well as ice cream stands and other food vendors. I had a great time and very happy to be living in the Sunshine State! read more

The first time I was "here" was the time just after the huge storm hit Brisbane. My ex-colleague back then was from Brisbane, so I was updated with the news and was fully prepared, or so I thought. There were (re-)constructions everywhere, and there were still traffic light poles lying on the floor. I knew it would be a street beach to be built there, but I didn't have a chance to see the final form of it. That was exactly why it impressed me so much at the second time I visited the south bank. Completely renovated. Lovely walk from the MOMA down to here. I wish we had the same in HK, but at the same time I know it wouldn't be as good. I can imagine it is not the thing a local would do, jumping into the water mid-walk, but hey, I was a backpacker with a short and a pair of thongs, so with a thought I jumped in. Brisbane was also one of the few stops I couldn't really dive into the sea (among Bryon, Surfers, Rainbow Beach, Fraser Island before and after...), so I appreciate anything that makes me feel cooler. read more

Excellent public and free option for families visiting Brisbane. My kids had a ball - there were so many creative little touches, decent bits of shade (though not over the water anywhere itself), nice changing facilities...a great place to cool off in the heat of summer. Restaurant options nearby weren't great and parking was very expensive, so next time we'll take the train. Overall, though, very pleased to have visited Streets Beach on our first day in Brisbane. read more

The man made Beach in South Bank is something that in its own right is quite impressive, the thought of a man made beach that's right above the Brisbane river is quite cool specially when you go and see the location for your self. The Streets Beach was sadly washed away during the floods last year due to its proximity to the river and was out of use for most of the year. It however back in action and seems to be at its former glory with people using it more often now during the summer period. I am never entirely sure personally about swimming in these public areas just because i don't like sharing a small amount of water with that many people. This is just a personal thing and should in no way reflect the beach because it does look very clean and it is controlled. If you do stay in Brisbane or are here for a small period of time then you should take some time go chill out in the sun and have a swim. read more

Beach in the city .... If you have never been here you would think it a bit of an oddity. A man made beach in the Southbank area which was constructed with sand that had to be trucked in. I can definitely see the appeal here as it is quite a cool and original idea. I have yet to see this anywhere else. If you haven't witnesses anything like this before and are in the area you should definitely have a look. Helps if the sun is shining! read more

I come here a lot with kids! So much fun on a school week when no one is around to snatch up every possible seating option on planet earth. Saturday- don't bother. There's lots of water, lots of sand and local cafe's around the place to grab a bite to eat. If you want to play in the sun and do something a little bit different streets beach is a cool alternative than driving to the coast. Come with some mates if you don't have kiddies to muck around a bit (i'm guilty of coming here with some adult friends and perhaps splashing someone a little too much, people get annoyed about that, so try not to have too much fun!) Watch your personal space because sometimes people can get grouchy, that's Sara's hot tip. Put that aside, it's a good spot in south bank, even if you're not a swimmer! read more

I have a confession to make, I have NEVER swum in the south bank pool! The place seems like so many kids would pee in it which just grosses me out. I do like to hang out in the area by the pool though, especially on a sunny afternoon. I must admit, the fact that we have a "beach" in the city is kind of cool! It is an interesting experience at first; to be "at the beach" and seeing the view of the CBD buildings right in front of you. In the past 5 years or so, a lot of work has gone into making the area children friendly. I am particularly fond of the area right next to the pool with all the fountains. It is obviously fun for the kids during the day time but it is also beautiful to look at night- the way the small lights reflect of the water is just beautiful. So even if you are not a fan or swimming in the pool, you can appreciate the space without the risk of exposing yourself to children's pee. read more

This man-made beach is not for the faint of heart. A definite tourist trap, I have heard many a tale regarding this chlorine pond. I admit an actual beach in the CBD vicinity is pretty cool, the water certainly looks picture perfect and oh-so inviting on a balmy Brisbane day. ...However it gets jam packed on sunny days. This beach is constantly littered with toddlers in floaties, screeching families, courageous speedo-wearing europeans, attractive semi-naked backpackers, seedy semi-naked backpackers and the odd local who doesn't quite know how they got there. At night make sure to watch for the U.F.O (Unidentified Floating Object) and the odd homeless person taking a bath. Be sure to also play a round of Safety Beach Eye-spy before parking your towel. (Otherwise you'll find yourself sitting on needles, poop and other fun things.) Streets beach is a pretty picturesque walk at night, or If you are in charge of ferrying your visiting friends or family this place makes for a unique intro to Brisbane. read more

Crowded, but fun. So scenic, on the river. Watch the world go by and cool down on a really hot day. Sure, it smells really chlorine-ey but I wouldn't have it any other way - there are just too many boods by far in there to get fussy about that. read more

Despite the many complaints, Streets Beach is a fantastic destination on a sweltering Brisbane day. With an awesome water play area that has water shooting here, there and everywhere from many different sources, a shallow paddling pool, a sand bottomed pool that is up to 2 metres deep and a massive waist high rock pool with a tiled bottom if you're adverse to sand, it's irresistible when the temperature soars. Being in the inner city suburb of Southbank, it's only a short trip for anyone and is easily accessible via public transport if you don't want to search the streets for a carpark or pay exorbitant fees in the underground parking lot. The pool has an incredible view of the city and Brisbane River and is of course surrounded by the lush Southbank Parklands. The pools themselves are monitored by several lifeguards for safety. The beach is very small, but if you can't find a spot on the sand amongst the hundreds of other people, there are plenty of grassy areas along the man-made pebbled creek which runs from the lagoon areas to the end of Southbank and its usually much quieter away from the crowds and perfect for sunbaking and picnics. Everyone whinges about how many kids probably pee in this pool but seriously, its so full of chemicals and is so thoroughly cleaned all the time that its not going to do you any harm. Head into Southbank on a 40 degree summer day and see how long you can resist the cool, sparkling clear water. As for complaints of dead bodies, syringes and other weird and wonderful items found in the area, Southbank is far too popular and well patrolled for anyone to consider doing anything shady in the vicinity. There are plenty showers to wash off the chemicals afterwards and lockers if you are worried about losing your belongings while you're in the water as well as plenty of great places to get food and drinks. read more

I have very conflicting feelings about this beach. Why I love it: I've never seen a man made beach like this anywhere else in the world, let alone one so close to the city. The Streets Beach underwent renovations after being affected during the Brisbane floods last year and it's great to see it's back looking bluer and cleaner (hopefully) than ever. On scorchers, it's comforting to know that there's a large body of water nearby. There are also events held here regularly, including the odd sand sculpture exhibition. One thing I'm particularly happy about is the renovated toilets. When I used to walk around South Bank I'd try to hold it in if I was busting because the toilets here were so gross; the ground would be sticky with water and sand, and the toilets were old and couldn't handle the constant influx of swimmers. But new, modern toilets have since been installed, and they are cleaned regularly. Why it's questionable: You have to wonder about the water to urine ratio in this pool. If you're swimming here I'd go by the same rules in spa baths: never duck your head under. The last time I swam in here, a few years ago, the amount of chlorine stung my eyes, and there were cigarette butts strewn all over the sand. Also, my friend once strolled by the Streets Beach in the early hours of the morning and saw the cops fishing out a body (o_o) But don't let that deter you - this is an incredibly family friendly beach and has cafes, restaurants, and grassy areas where you can unwind on a weekend if you're unwilling to make the drive to the coast. read more
