These guys are solid! I was passing through from Washington,…read moregoing home to the San Francisco bay area where I train in Kyokushin. I've found that MMA gyms tend to be more in line with the training we get in Kyokushin than most traditional martial arts schools of other styles here in the USA, because they train hard and fight full contact. While I didn't get a chance to spar these guys, the padwork was excellent, and then there was a bunch of MMA-related balance ball stuff that kicked my butt! I went for the Muay Thai and MMA class, and I was glad I showed up. Everyone was super nice. I was the only woman there, but I didn't feel unwelcome, nor did I feel coddled. I have a lot of physical disabilities (being female isn't one of them) and the coach accepted when I said I wasn't able to do an activity safely, but he also gave me something else to do, which I appreciated. All of the students were polite, friendly, down to earth, and fun to train with. Super nice guys. They don't put on airs and there isn't a bunch of bowing and standing in certain position type protocol, but don't get the idea that they are thugs because of that. MMA people are just as chill as TMA people. Actually, they're kind of MORE chill than a lot of TMA people. The gym is huge and very well outfitted. There are a couple mat rooms, there's a room with heavy bags, there's a boxing ring, and there's a cage. Lots of striking pads, focus mitts, gloves, shin guards, etc etc. The place seems clean. There are a lot of different classes, and they are very welcoming to new people. Check them out. I'm glad I did, and I wish I had more than one day here so I could go back!

If playing racquetball and swimming laps are important to you, then it might be worth it. They just raised their rates and I'm not able to see any upgrades. Very few spin class options. The bathrooms are very run down, especially the men's, where there is no privacy. The men's open showers are right out of a 1950's military barrack. The ventilation is bad, so the smells coming from the one toilet stall mix with the steam and fill the whole bathroom and changing area. And though it's not the gym's fault, some of the gym members have very bad hygiene standards in the bathroom. The age demographic generally skews 65+. You can potentially save hundreds of dollars per year elsewhere.

So let me start by saying this - I'm by no means some fitness buff. I was always athletic & have…read morehad some good runs at the gym here and there, but it's really be a good 5 years since I've had any sort of regular exercise routine. In other words, I'm just your average 30 something mom who has not made herself a top priority and has gotten a little "soft". I have tried CrossFit twice before but didn't have a good experience so I didn't last long. I felt intimidated by the moves, the cliques within the gym, and the pressure to always be increasing weight when I knew I needed to focus more on form. For some reason, I decided to give it one more go because, well, it was time to do something for me. I heard about CF Steelhead and wanted to give it a shot because a) I had heard really great things about the owners/trainers, 2) it was close to my house, and c) I finally admitted that I need motivation to work out. It's now been two weeks and I finally feel that passion (albeit not the culty obsession) about CrossFit. I credit it entirely to Laura and Ty who have been so welcoming, friendly, and inspiring. You can tell how dedicated not only to their new business venture, but to their customers who they obviously care about. This morning I could barely lift my arms to take my shirt off after my work out, but it is a surprisingly good feeling. I look forward to taking a peek at the website every night to see what the workout is going to be the following morning and don't get discouraged when I see that there will be elements like push ups, pull ups, and double unders because even though I suck at them now, I finally feel confident that I will one day master them. Perhaps one day I will even be one of those dorks who is constantly posting pictures of themselves of Facebook doing 150 lb. over head squats. Okay, probably not, but I am still pretty ecstatic to have found this place. Thanks Laura and Ty for doing what you do. You guys are the best and am ecstatic to be a part of your crew!
