The Sandhills Woman's Exchange began in 1923 when a group of women got together to help those in…read moreneed. It allowed women to earn an income and sell their handcrafted products, whether it be quilts or jams and jellies or canned goods. They eventually found the log cabin that was built in 1823 that was near a grist mill. It has been operating continuously ever since with the help of volunteers with the goal of helping others help themselves. The Sandhills Woman's Exchange is part of the Federation of Woman's Exchanges. There are currently 15 of them remaining in the United States. There is a parking lot that I missed as the spots in front were filled. It is to the right, soon after you pull in, before the cabin. I ended up in a different lot and walked back up to the log cabin. I will know for my next visit. Besides the gift shop filled with wonderfully crafted, unique items from pottery to crochet to garden items, to wood crafts and so much more, there is a café. The café is cute and rustic. The menu has soups and salads, sandwiches and quiches. I went with the special which was a shrimp pasta salad. I chose a side salad and it came with a flattened roll that had cheese on it. Everything was delicious and remember to save room for dessert. I got a slice of hummingbird cake. This was such a special and unique place to visit.

During my most recent visit, the woman I spoke with...who had glasses and shoulder length hair...was in the middle of making soap, which I understood she couldn't immediately stop. However, when I explained what I was looking for, instead of offering assistance or even a bit of understanding, I felt completely brushed off. This same dismissive attitude has been present every time I've visited. Because of these repeated experiences, I will no longer be a customer, and I won't be recommending this business to anyone...

More than retail, it seems the place is now more of an artsy crafty place than a retail store. The entire place looked bigger...more space, since less retail. I thought they should have had some overhead music to fill the empty space, and give it more of a vibe. They still had this bar area, where they served wine (aside from the Jackass Cafe in the back). Still, I love the big, wide, open space that this place has to offer...and its Bohemian vibe. And did I mention their awesome artwork on their walls - both inside and out?
