Came to Barre Body Studio for the first time this weekend as part of Yelp's Club Fit! The facility was beautiful with Barre studios (one larger than the other). The atmosphere was beautiful, bright, and clean! Glow Juicery is just inside to the left for a pre or post workout treat! I love that everything is made right in front of you and totally customizable! I love ANYTHING with ginger and kale - Yummy! Erin was the instructor for my class - super friendly and knowledgeable. She gave alternatives for lower impact options when it came to the cardio section. I was really surprised at the intensity of the class given the small movement/range of motion. I am confident the class could kick the fittest butt around as well as being modifiable for someone just starting to work out. Class was broken up into warm up, upper body with weights, lower body with a squishy ball, cardio, and ab work on eco friendly mats. They provide everything you need, including lockers with a key! They sell special footy socks that help you grip the floor if you like. I noticed on the wall that they were in the midst of a 30 day challenge, too! There were three large washrooms and beautiful vanity sink area complete with personal hygiene items if you needed to freshen up. If you are looking for a women only fitness class, definitely give Barre Body Studio a try! read more

Oh I am so in love with Barre Body Studio! It is just such a total body work out. Seriously, it works out muscles I didn't know I had! I love that there are many different classes, including the quick 45 min power workouts over lunch! Ya baby! The instructors, and especially the phenomenal owner, Megan, are so helpful and encouraging - these women rock! As do the women in the classes. I always feel very comfortable going solo to the group classes, there is just a great mix of all ages, and all body types. After being introduced to barre last year, it quickly became an integral and favorite part of my regular fitness routine. Barre Body Studio has a fantastic location, right off Gateway Boulevard and the Whitemud freeway, making access from most parts of the south side a breeze. The studio offers a variety of classes, with the regular class (Barre Fit) supplemented by classes focusing on stretching/abs, resistance bands and more cardio. The space has two studios, and showers/bathrooms that double as changing rooms. As far as the classes themselves go, I feel like there is more emphasis on the aerobic component than perfecting the form and the movement of the exercise. Barre uses small isometric movements to isolate and tone muscle groups, so form is key to getting the maximum benefit. The classes move quickly, and it can be difficult to keep up if you can't see the instructor. When the class is at capacity, the main studio feels crowded, and it is difficult to find a space where you won't hit someone with an arm swing. There is less stretching than the other studios I have been to, which gives more exercise for the allotted class time, but I found I really missed a long deep stretch at the end of the work out. After going 2-3x a week for two weeks, the classes got really repetitive, which made me less and less excited about going. I did the two week unlimited introduction pass for newcomers at this studio. I didn't like that there isn't a full time receptionist to ask questions of at the front, and that there isn't a place to sit and wait if you come early for a class. I also wasn't given any introduction or orientation to the studio when I first arrived. My friend and I were left to figure everything out on our own, and this was a little frustrating for the specialty classes, where we had no idea what we should grab for the class (Which resistance bands? Do we need weights or a ball?). I am fairly comfortable with barre, but I can't imagine how intimidating this would be if you had never taken a class before. There is also no water fountain in the facility. If you forget a water bottle, you either go without, or can purchase a room temperature disposable water bottle from the front desk. What's the bottom line of this review? The classes are good, but not great. The overall atmosphere of the studio is lacking in terms of user-friendliness and welcoming of newcomers (especially considering the cost of the classes). I wanted to love Barre Body, but I'll be sticking to my regular barre studio. read more

I had the opportunity to try Barre Body studio this long weekend through Yelp's Fit Club. Walking into the studio I was immediately impressed with the look of the place. They have a big change area/bathroom and a bunch of lockers to lock up your bags (complementary) too! There are two studios for classes. The class itself was a little bit different than I was expecting; I thought it'd be a lot more stretching than working with weights, balls and matwork. But, holy moly this was a more intense work out than I thought it was. I'm really glad I was able to check it out! If you're looking for a different, women only work out I'd say you should definitely give this one a go! read more

I attended Barre Body Studio for my first Yelp Event; it was a wonderful experience. The staff was incredibly friendly, the decor was clean, modern--and nothing looked cheap. Beautiful lighting fixtures, functional racks for boots, etc. and best of all---lockers (for free)! I had no expectations going into the class but I was pleasantly surprised. I was nervous that I might need a bit of dance experience, but don't worry: this class is perfect regardless of your level of fitness and dance experience. The instructor (Megan) gave tons of modifications for all levels of fitness (low-impact options, etc.) We worked with balls, bands, and the barre to strengthen and tone our bodies in the places we ladies want to see it most (butt, abs, shoulders)! There was also stretching and cardio components incorporated throughout the 1 hour class. If you're anything like me and you have trouble finding motivation for the gym, give Barre Body Studio a shot. The atmosphere was fun and supportive, the facilities top-notch, and yes-- my glutes are burning (bring on the beach bod)! read more

I am obsessed with Barre. I've been going with my mom and it's so fun. It's tiny isometric movements that really kill the muscles. Great music gets played, the instructors are nice and patient, and its such a good workout!! I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it was actually really fun! :) They offer $40 unlimited for 2 weeks after you have your first class. I think that is a good enough incentive to get into the program. They say you need about 3-4 classes a week before you start seeing results. So I am excited to see what happens to my body after doing this consistently. Unfortunately I am very inflexible, but I hope after some work here I will get a little bit better! read more

This was a pretty fancy fitness class. Now, I had never done a barre class before now, and I'll admit that I was rather pleased with the kind of workout it was in general, but I did feel a bit self conscious about my overall lack of flexibility, especially when people were putting their feet up on the bar to stretch and I knew I couldn't even get my toes onto the bar (I'm short and that doesn't help). Unfortunately there wasn't even an alternate exercise for this one provided by the instructor (whereas she did provide one when she noticed that I was having issues with my wrists doing some moves -- and I really did appreciate the alternate exercises as they allowed me to participate when it was clearly not an option with the original exercise. Still it didn't feel like a class where I would likely be able to consistently keep up in the future because the rest of the women are just so much more skilled than I am -- even in a beginner class. But who knows, maybe this would grow on me in time? The facilities are in great shape and the lighting is gorgeous. Indeed, even the locker room is beautiful. They sell fitness garb and toe socks (which are normally required in class). This is a location that is reasonably transit accessible as it is only a 15 minute walk from Southgate mall or a brief bus ride. There is also a lot of parking. The instructor was great and she had a good attitude in general. If you're into a ballet inspired workout, barre might be the right thing for you! read more

Awesome barre body fit class! The studio is absolutely beautiful and the staff is so nice! The class is low impact but wowza do your muscles ever burn and your legs shake!! This ballet inspired workout had me feeling like I had a great workout and I was even feeling it the next day. The 9am saturday class was 100% full proving that this is a very popular workout in the city! I cannot wait to take more classes here I had a blast! They also have a glow juice bar inside the studio for a little treat after your workout - but be warned the juices are very expensive ($9 for one juice) read more

The workout was effective and comparable to bar classes I've attended in NYC (pure barre, barre method) for much less! The studio is roomy, spotless and has lovely showers, towels, and personal items to use. There's also a great juice bar to go to after class (loved the pear cucumber juice for cooling down!) I have a dance background and thought it would be similar to an intense ballet workout or something. I was very very wrong, but in an awesome way. The class was super fun and I had a good sweat going on nearly the entire time. It's a full body workout! Biceps, triceps, shoulders, back, glutes, quads and calves. I'm so glad I tried this class, I want to come back with my friends :) Also the instructor was really positive and pushed you to keep going but not feel like you need to sustain knjuries. read more

I'd been wanting to check out this new fitness "trend" for some time now so I was pretty excited to come here. Barre Body Studio has 2 locations in the city, Whitemud Crossing and Holland Plaza. I visited the Holland location which I found to be in an odd area but it wasn't hard to find. The studio itself is very modern and clean. It's very spacious on the inside. There are a lot of lockers to use. So what exactly is barre? It's a workout that uses yoga, pilates, and dance techniques with the ballet barre as a prop for balancing. A lot of isolated movements are used to tone and increase strength and flexibility. Even though there are a lot of dance related movements, you don't need a background in dance! Classes are taught with energizing music to a group of people. Grip socks are recommended for classes (also sold in the studio) but you can go barefoot as well if you're testing out your first class. There are a few different types of barre classes taught. Barre is a good workout for those who struggle with motivation for exercising. It doesn't really feel like a workout because it's fun. Personally, I didn't find it to be challenging but everyone has their own different levels of fitness! read more

Worried you don't have the vocabulary of a ballerina? Worry no longer! You will soon have the first position mastered and have a fun workout. Barre Body Fitness was a great experience! From the friendly staff and knowledgable instructor you will be pleasantly surprised by this new fitness experience. The facility was really nice (including free lockers and Glow Juicery available on site). The workout itself was engaging and allowed you to target your whole body in a low impact yet effective way. We used mats, bands, balls and weights throughout the workout. I particularly enjoyed the amount of time given to stretch between sets. If you are expecting to dance it is more focused on the muscles and your self awareness with lots of options to modify. Good luck at the barre! read more

The barre class was awesome - a really great workout. What turned me off a little was the atmosphere. The first time I checked this place out during open house, everyone was really friendly. Recently, after a great workout (and my first here), I was excited to talk to the instructor about the class but nope, she did not want to engage in conversation and instead just went on with whatever she was doing at the computer. Granted, they did open only a month ago and probably have a lot to catch up on but still, if a student is looking for advice or whatever, an instructor should take the time to listen. I'll probably check it out again but depending on how that goes, for the price, I'd rather go somewhere with a warmer and friendlier environment. read more

I have done Barre Body 4 times in the last 2 months...and I am a man! And I am sore after every time. This is a true full body workout. My wife is addicted to Barre Body Studio and I am glad because it is getting her in amazing shape. The studio is beautiful and there is a glow juicery attached for a nice cold juice after class. Yelp Fit Club had an event at the Barre Body Studio today, which was a great opportunity to check out the facilities. I have taken a couple of barre classes before in other cities but by no means am I a pro. First off, Barre Body Studio is the most upscale and luxurious barre studio I've been in. It's clean, elegant and modern for such a small space. Registration and check in was easy. There are free lockers with keys for your stuff. The bathrooms (with showers) were clean and had lots of amenities. There was a water cooler in the back too that does both hot and cold drinks. There were even chandeliers hanging in the Barre rooms!! There's also a glow juicery in the lobby for a healthy post workout drink. The only thing I'd change (and this is probably due to lack of space) is that the bathrooms weren't really in a separate private area; it was more of an extension of the main studio. The locker area got quite crowded too before and after class. Megan was out fearless leader for the hour, and she worked us hard! I got a well-rounded workout, from arms, to abs, to legs, to butt (and a smattering of cardio too). The hour just flew by! I will say that the room was a bit crowded though with over 20 people. Sorry to my neighbours that I inadvertently hit! Hopefully their regular classes aren't as full. There were a couple times that I found it hard to see the instructor because of everyone there. Megan was great at accommodating all levels with modifications, and helped one on one with technique too. Compared to the other barre classes I've taken, this class had less emphasis on the barre, and more on weights, ball, floor, resistance band exercises. It was a bit less cardio than I've experienced in other classes too. She did mention that every class is different though. I personally like more time at the barre, because this is what makes the workout unique! Barre Body Studio has a $40 for 2 weeks trial offer, as well as monthly, 5 and 10 class pass and drop in rates. I decided to try an alternate to the gym. I have a work out routine but sometimes going to the gym seems more a chore. I had a sports injury and was told by physio therapist to try Barre. It emphasizes toning and strengthening muscles added bonus- sculpting. It isn't easy but the ladies at both locations are friendly instructors with vast variety of styles. Classes are intense but you see results. They cater to all types- beginners , intermediate and also provide options for private classes . Coed- baby and child friendly as they provide an assortment of classes. Very clean environment - well kept. Whitemud location has Glow Juciery right in it. Deals are always available and they are very accommodating. Attached to the app - mind body - so keep track of everything . I learned about "barre" on my honey moon last year in Hawaii, so I have been patiently waiting for a studio to open up near my house....this is a great location with quite a few time slots to choose from. The workout is very different from anything I have ever done. Your legs get very sore from a 60 minute workout & the instructors are very knowledgeable. The studio is clean, bright, and very welcoming. I will definitely incorporate this class into my fitness regime. read more

Tried this studio through Yelp ' s fitset. I was expecting more barre work and more stretching. I did enjoy the class, it was a good workout. They do have more of a stretch class which I think I will try. The studio is nicely decorated and has two studios. The studio I was in was full and it was a little hard to see the instructor. I really enjoy this studio. It's an incredible full body work out, that's fun and challenging. I like how much the classes vary from instructor to instructor.
