We needn't have worried, its open to anyone, we went in and chose a dragon each to paint, and were sat down at a table with paints and brushes. The staff in there explain about what you need to do first to ensure the dust is off the item, and then about the colours and layering, and they leave you to it. It's really relaxing, and you can have a hot drink and cake while there, they do monster cappuccinos' which are well worth the money. Once you've finished painting you leave your item to dry, then pay for the pot, the paints and depending on whether you are collecting it, a postage fee. We've always collected ours so you get a day when it'll be ready and you go back and pick up a fired shiny pot. We've done it twice as its so relaxing and we love, and I would recommend it especially on a damp day!

The family history department is a must for anyone researching about this area. The archive contains hundreds of files on local families. Family History can be done online or by post too I think. Walking up the staicase feels good and there are great paintings to see.They own some lovely paintings by great artists but also host some fantastic exhibitions.You can stand and stare in silence but if you want to know anything when I went there was a really helpfull and knowledgeable man.

They have a full range of sewing and other craft items, with lots of lovely nick nacs. It is a very expensive shop and not somewhere I could afford to shop on a regular basis. The lady that owns the shop is lovely and very helpful when you visit, she is very knowledgeable about many aspects of craft and sewing.

The craft centre itself is based on a victorian street and it really does feel like you have been transported back in time. The street noises playing out including church bells it was quite surreal at first. There are 16 different shops which sell a range of goods including jewellery and candles as well as a bakers. I bought some buns from the bakers and they were lovely and cost 75p each. Also there is an icecream palour and I have a yummy icecream which cost £2. Great place if your after something different to do and looking to buy more unique good rather than off the highstreet.

They have a theatre, a cinema, a cafe, a bar, a conference space and various other spaces. Plus the view of the beach is fantastic and there are steps in the building that lead to the path to the beach. Although this did lead to ditching a boring session and having a paddle and loaf on the beach instead.

It has been improved many times since with vast entertainment and display areas added. I have only had experience when Whitby Folk Festival virtually take over the complex for one week in August. Wonderful dance and music sessions in the Exhibition Hall and the downstairs pavilion hall and top class performances in the theatre. All ground floor areas have dedicated bars with a good selection of drinks and the main area has a cafe/coffee bar which serves a wide variety of snacks and meals at the appropriate times. The views over the sea are spectacular I am told this is one of the few places in Britain one can actually watch the sun come up and go down over the sea and I can well believe it, having seen some spectacular sunsets and dawns.

All in all, worth a visit, but don't plan on spending all day there -- there simply isn't enough of it to last that long.
