Spanish Experience Center new location in Centro Guanajuato…read more Javier, Val and Rojelio are excellent Spanish teachers with lots of creativity and expertise. Likewise, Lupita is an essential guide for exploring the cultural activities in GTO and learning key everyday things (like getting your Mexican phone chip the first week, hailing a taxi and going to a hacienda for brunch, bank accounts, and going to the doctor's office). It is a full immersion experience, as advertised. Every one of the teachers has a fantastic personality and sense of humor making it easy to hang out with them and learn the language to the best of your ability. I go back to them again and again because it works, and I truly believe I'm learning Spanish much faster at the SEC than anywhere else here. The reason for that is because Rojelio teaches the individual rules behind trickier parts of Spanish way better than you'd get in a typical highschool class or university one. One day I realized, "This is way more comprehensive and insightful than those classes I had as a youngin!" [because it was.] If you don't understand the "why?" part, you're just guessing a lot of the time what to say in Spanish which makes you stutter and stammer and conversations grind to a halt. I live in a Mexican family home as recommended so it all sinks in organically just by following the program. They have a very effective and practical system of teaching Spanish along with learning Mexican culture inside and out. It ends up being fun and challenging, because they gently push you beyond what you think you can do which is where the real advances come from. That is really a sign of respect and the hallmark of the best kind of teachers, which they definitely are.

Although we were there on a nice sunny day, this would also be a great spot to visit if the weather wasn't cooperating. I wish I had brought an extra suitcase, so much great art, items and unique and inspiring pieces.

If you're looking for more of the upscale Carmel-by-the-Sea vibe, you can find it here in spades…read more It's far enough from Zona Centro for you to avoid most of the tourist congestion but close enough to stroll over. Arresting pieces of public art come into view before you get to the entrance of this former textile factory. Too bad they've been placed rather unphotogenically in the parking lot (Photo 8). They've done an excellent job renovating the buildings and sprucing up the grounds. There are three upmarket components to this expansive complex: art galleries, retail stores, and cafes. It can make for a pleasant browsing experience should you be in the mood for it, but if not, it illustrates a rather polarizing divide between the haves and have-nots in San Miguel de Allende. If you're seriously considering a purchase here, you know which camp you're in. There's certainly enough outdoor furniture and ornate bric-a-brac here to fill your summer home. The only items Jamie W and I bought were a pair of iced coffees and an artful slice of apple pie at Geek & Coffee, a charming terrace cafe on the grounds (Photo 16), a pleasant break before we headed back to town.
