Sub City is for all those comic book fans out there - a treasure trove of material. They focus much more on the printed matter than on the toy/collectible end of things. The shop is narrow but packed and reasonably priced even in this age of internet shopping. Whether you've read all the Frank Miller stories out there or you've just heard of Alan Moore, this is not an off-putting nerd-paradise that you might expect. The world of comic books is one that I have never delved into. I am a big fan of reading, and of looking at pictures but comics have just never interested me. Combine that with the fact that anime scares me, and you have the reason why I have never, ever been inside a comic book shop. But, I decided to be brave and check Sub-City out, for the sake of adventure and boredom. Now, having absolutely no knowledge of comics, going into a lion's den of this sort was extremely intimidating. I really didn't have much to look for or at, because I wasn't looking for anything and didn't know what I was looking at. But, the guy at the desk greeted me like he would any other comic book dork and I was enlivened. I perused the comics, marveled at the amazing artwork in some and checked out the models, which are probably a lot of fun to put together. The guy was tied up with another customer, but when they were done I knew he was going to come talk to me and I got all panicked. Lo and behold, he sauntered over and chippily said, "how's it going?" "I don't know what I'm doing, I'm just looking around. Huuyuuuh thanks!," I blubbered. He laughed and proceeded to say it was totally cool and to let him know if I needed help. He handled my dork meltdown well, which makes me think he probably deals with that a lot. read more

I haven't been in a comic book shop in years but since it was across the street from the hotel, I thought why not. It's not that I expected something to have changed but it was more of a wanting to have that trip down memory lane (which the smell alone can trigger it). Sub-city did just that for me, seeing old school comics filled me with joy (thought the prices did not, I won't tell you how much they used to cost) and being surprised at the talent in today's comics artists. What really impressed me was that Sub-city carried a whole section of local artists. It was really neat and exactly what I was looking for. I proceeded to ask the store clerk about them and though he gave me a little attitude at first but then he quickly changed his tune a little when he saw that I was actually interested. He told me how his friend was one of the local artist and that he himself does the story telling, he even showed me himself as his character in a few of the comics. As I purchased a few, I asked bashfully if he would sign one (You never know, so I always do it), he chuckled a little as he was writing. I thought for sure he was writing something mean (as I nervously stood there, awaiting to read something about my age or that I was uncool for bothering him). Ever since going here in March of last year, I've been going back ever since at least once a month for my comic books. While it may look disorganised at first, I found that it was quite easy to find the right comic books. I have also found the staff very helpful and friendly. With a large emphasis on Irish comics, it has a good variety of comic books, but sadly doesn't offer a large selection of action figures and other collectibles. Altogether, this is by far my favourite store in Dublin for comics and is always my first stop on my frequent trips into town. read more

Five stars for a super-small, sort of disorganised, pretty unassuming comic book store? Sub City takes home the gold because not only is a great place to pick up something good to read, but it's also doing important work for those poor souls trying to make a living from comics in Ireland. Sub City have been publishing Irish comics through their Atomic Diner imprint for a few years. I picked up issue one of their newest creation "League of Volunteers" this weekend. The fact that Sub City are willing to put their money where their mouth is a good enough reason to spend a few of your hard-earned here. read more

I have a confession to make: I'm a bit of a comic-book geek. I love Sub-City because the guys working here don't make you feel like an outsider when you're not wearing dorky clothes and the store has a wide selection of comic-book series including ever single one of my personal favourite Neil Gaiman's Sandman. The best comic book store in Dublin, much better than Forbidden Planet if you're actually looking to buy COMIC BOOKS. They have everything from Archie to Dark Hole. Although a bit pricey, it's a niche market in europe. They have great vintage silver age comics and not a bad selection of back issues. Sub-City also has trading cards and an (unnecessary) stock of DVDs. Great for Frank Miller, even better for Mike Mignola. read more

Sub City faces alot of competition within Dublin, for new issues Forbidden Planet offers a wider stock and is cheaper on a wide variety of the graphic novels and on back issues the shop in Temple Bar (can't remeber name or if it has one) has far more range. However Sub City has very friendly staff and is run by just two guys who are always willing to help and don't have the common resentment which seems all to common in comic shop workers. While it doesn't have the largest range of back issues in Dublin it does have excellent prices on single issues but also they have implemented a system where you can buy entire story arcs in one package which is great. read more

A really good comic book store if you want overly priced back issues and to be ripped off with whats on the wall because they are more than likely 3 times the price as the comic book price guide. There nice once your buying there overly priced stock But when it comes to you having to stop your pull list for financial issues,Trying to get a decent price for your back issues and not get robbed then your in the wrong place. Because years of business has made them greedy and rude and let power go to their head.Because they think they know it all because they own a shop but there comic knowledge has faded or there playing dumb to rip you off.They take things to personal and they need to be nicer to their customers or theyl go under in this recession. read more

Decent selection of back issues. Reasonably priced, although they have seen an increase of late. This has been offset by regular sales that they hold. Good, solid selection of trade paperbacks, some on discount. Always a deal to be had somewhere. The manager will often point you in the right direction when he gets to know you. It would probably score higher if not for the manner of the manager. The other guy who works there is a man of few words but is ok, he's just naturally quiet, but pleasant enough in his own way. The guy that runs it, has a pretty nasy habit of looking at you in the shop with a contemptuous sneer on his face. He tries to be nice through gritted teeth, but hasn't quite got the authenticity down. At least he makes the effort. Although he has growled at me on occasion in an over-familiar fashion. The name of the game is to 'SELL' not alienate. Both members of staff are extrememely knowledgeable and their love of the comic book medium shines through. They both know their stuff which is a huge plus. Store is attractive inside. Lots to hold your attention. Great comics on the wall dating back to the 60's etc. A pleasant shopping experience. read more

I go in at least once a month to look at the toys and ask questions about the newer comics. The staff is very knowledgeable and will answer even the most off the wall questions about the newer versions of characters I grew up reading in the 80's and 90's. For the selection of vintage toys from the 80's alone, its worth a look. It is a pretty good selection without having to dig on the internet and pay insane amounts of shipping. read more

I've been coming here since it opened in the mid 90s and by God do they take their comics seriously! It's a comic shop, a proper one with a good quality second hand selection, all the latest titles, tpbs and collections. If they don't have it, they can order it but be prepared to wait for a bit. I popped in today with a pile of tpbs to trade for shop credit and got a very fair price (and Rob didn't mind that one of the Shade The Changing Man comics had got some sticky soya sauce on the cover). I picked up a few new comics and went on my way happy. read more

Reviewing bad experiences is not something I normally think of doing, in fact I created this account just to write a review about this place specifically, great collection of comics and novels and a pretty cool place altogether. I prefer going to smaller comic stores and paying a bit extra for a novel or two because I really like having them in Dublin even though as smaller places go Sub-City is one of the more expensive. I have gone into this store on three separate occasions and each time the same guy behind the till has been nothing short of rude to me each time, firstly giving the shortest possible answer too a question and acting like you're wasting his time, secondly the bored and couldn't care less attitude he gives off is really uninviting and the general close to passive- aggressively way he conducts himself is just pretty unnecessary. through out my interaction with him I found him to be rude, short in his answers and flippant in his responses. Treating customers like that is pretty uncool especially considering they are going the extra mile to buy graphic novels in a shop and one of the more expensive shops in Dublin at that. read more
