Aside from Sub-city, the only place you should really bother looking for comics in Dublin is Forbidden planet. They have a huge amount of stock, mostly comics, but they also stock manga, novels, t-shirts, magazines, dvd's and toys. There are signings on every few weeks and the names they get in are fairly big. If you're not a huge geek, don't be intimidated by the shelves upon shelves of comics, just ask a member of staff and they'll point you in the right direction. They're all really nice guys and if you're a geek they'll have an aul chin wag with you about comics. Drop in on a Thursday, that's when new stock arrives. read more

This is not a shop that I have ever frequented before and will probably never frequent again, the main reason being I am not a geek / nerd / vampire slayer. Walking in to this 'comic' / 'geek fest' store lived up to every stereotype I had in my head. The guy at the counter ways playing with and creaming over a new Star Wars toy, no I am not making this up! I nearly walked out of the place there and then! It is not that I think I am cooler or that my interests are some what better than the ones catered too in this store, it is just that I don't 'get' the fascination and obsession that people have with sci-fi, fantasy, comics, etc, but then again I have never seen Star Wars, maybe I would like it if I don't have such a narrowed minded view on these things! But any ways, I am in this store to buy a Zombie gift for a geek I know! But this store doesn't have much in the ways of Zombie books or toys or games or stuff like that, but they do have a few comics. However, the staff were so nice and helpful and really went out of their way to help me, gave me a list of cool Zombie stuff to buy my friend, wrote it all down for me, plus the names of stores and websites I could buy them in and then told me they would order anything in for me that I couldn't find. This is the greatest service I have ever received anywhere. They genuinely wanted to help me! I felt so looked after. The store itself is well stocked and orderly and has a really cool vibe to it and now, well, I might be tempted to go back in, even if I don't have a gift to buy for a geek! read more

Nerdalert!! Its forbidden planet, named after the 1955 Leslie Nielsen movies, he's a fair age now. This comic warehouse was the original occupier of what is now Sam Sara, before Dawson street went all Ross O'Carroll Kelly. They've been down on the quays for years now. I went in here expecting it to be a bit sad really but its actually kinda entertaining, theres loads of toys infact, my personal favourite were the talking Chewie and Darth vader heads and who could resist Jack '24' Bauer shouting quotes from the tv series, all on handy keyring. Back when I was younger and embarrassingly nerdier, hard to believe I know, I was in here every weekend, I'll stop now before I incriminate myself further. Anyway the place is full of books,comics, sorry graphic novels,toys, signed merchandise, the aferomentioned toys. Nerd culture has become "the culture" so quickly in the last few years that places like Forbidden Planet now intimidate me in a way I never thought possible. If my spotty 14 year old self could flash-forward to today, he'd have just one question: "When did we win?" Forbidden Planet freaks me out because the dusty comic book shops I just to trawl through are now a thing of the past, and they've been replaced by places like this. They're now more cultural hubs, that are gradually reaching out the wider public. Instead of hiding away, they're throwing their doors open and have found the world to be very receptive. Forbidden Planet caters to ever corner of nerdy ephemera: comics, manga, movies, gaming, toys. As it is more of general store, you might know better places for the more hardcore fans of particular genres. But if you're just starting out, you're really lucky to have a friendly spot like this to start in. In fact, you'll never know just how lucky you are. read more

Hmmm maybe I was a bit hard on the place last time. I found out the place got flooded only a few years ago which makes the smell forgivable. On that note it's not even smelly anymore. It now has that nice aroma of paper and plastic you'd find in a toy store. I also went into Sub City a few days ago to find a particular TPB (trade paperback for the uninitiated, basically a collection of single issues normally covering a story arc spliced into handy graphic novel form) and the place is an abject mess! It also smacks of elitism. Sure FB may have Twilight posters and Phantom Menace toys by the barrelful but it's still a damn good bastion of Nerd and they display and organise their comics well. read more

This is actually my least favourite comic book shop in Dublin. I'm not saying that I don't like it at all but thinking of the few comic book shops in this fair city Forbidden Planet is at the bottom of that list. Yes, they do have a decent selection of comics on offer and yes, they do stock a huge amount of collectible figurines and that sort of thing, but Twilight?? Especially people who don't like to read (those people scare me), because comic books are basically picture books for grownups, mostly with really cool drawings and sometimes they're kinda porny. What's not to like? Forbidden Planet will satisfy anyone in need of a comic fix, and delight perusers like myself as well. Forbidden Planet will cover all of your nerdy needs. Comic books, manga, nerdy merch and so on. The staff in here have usually been very helpful and they will help you find whatever you need. A large portion of the store is dedicated to pricey merchandise and toys, which can yield some excellent stocking stuffers for christmas or gag birthday presents (Star Trek Enterprise baby spoon! A tin of Unicorn Meat! ect).This is great if you are looking for a GoT Arya Stark figure or a pun-tastic GoT shirt for a teenage fan of the show, Not so great if you are in your mid twenties, searching for the entire collectors edition boxset. The manga section downstairs is excellent, only problem is that there is just a little bit of a funny smell down there. The upstairs section needs a major facelift too.. the dusty, old carpet really needs to go. read more

Forbidden Planet is for sci-fi nerds but it's okay to be a nerd. A lot of sweaty men that looked like Comic Book Guy (Simpsons' character) were in here drooling over toys. There was a whole wall of wrestling figurines, a Manga DVD section and posters downstairs. It was kinda fun getting lost in all the crazy merchandise. I really did feel like I was on another planet. The more I looked the more I found decent stuff that was kinda cool. After being in here for 20 minutes, I spotted these little Japanese cartoonish figurines that I wanted to buy. I think most people will make fun of this place but in the end there's something for everyone. read more

As a nerd this place is paradise on earth. It can be a little intimidating looking from the outside but don't be scared it's an awesome shop They seem to have a really good range of comic books and can order pretty much anything for you. Personally I think they could do with being a little less pricey. What I love most is all of the "stuff" they sell - it's an amazing place just to browse around from toys to clothes and all sorts of cool things you can easily loose track of time there They have a big collection of used comics downstairs if you are trying to complete that old collection and who knows maybe you can find a gem there. Unfortunately they are not that good with RPG witch can be a little frustrating when you are trying to upgrade your MAGIC deck. They also have a big catalog on line but not nearly as fun read more

I love Forbidden Planet!! I can stay in there for ages!! But the only down side is it has way way way too much Twilight merchandise, like who needs a life size cardboard cut out of Edward Cullen?? He's too pale and his hair is a mess!! And it kinda smells like damp!! But other than that I love it!! And the prices are pretty reasonable!! But the Twilight stuff does get my goat!! Nerds of Dublin, roll up, roll up. Comics and comic book paraphernalia (posters, figurines etc) covering three floors. Grown men have been known to openly drool. It's cheaper to buy this stuff on the internet. Also they sometimes run out of stock, but the staff are friendly and don't seem to like their employer much, so if they don't have what you want, they'll usually direct you to that other comic book shop on Exchequer Street. read more

This is a great comic book shop. First, it is in a fantastic location in the center of town. No hunting down back alleys and getting accosted by gypsies. They are right on the Quay. Second, the people who work there are knowledgeable and they enjoy customers. They always have a good attitude, even when they don't have some esoteric item you're after. The selection is pretty darn good. They have the most Doctor Who merchandise I have ever seen in one place. They also have some Japanese character merchandise, so even the hard core Japanophile can find something with Domo Kun on it! I am glad this shop exists. Forbidden Planet is a well stocked comic and "geek" shop frequented by the "nerds" of Dublin. The prices are extortionate for all items, even during the sales you'll never find a bargain. Some of the staff have a mightier than God attitude towards people they sense haven't a clue about comic books (like myself). Nonetheless it's always fun to browse and laugh at the prices people spend of comic books and related paraphernalia. read more

I love this store and always try to make a trip to it when I'm in Dublin. They have great stock that my wallet can't handle!

If you've ever watched the OC - think of a place Seth would be found... you've got Forbidden Planet. Dorky stuff like anime, comic books, toy figures, sci-fi and pretty much whatever else you can think of that would fit into that category! And the thing is, it's not just one small room, it's 3 full floors of this stuff. The place is packed wall to wall with geek goods so you're sure to find something that will make you smile, or it'll make you think back to when you were younger and really wanted your own Batman comic book! If that's not amazing enough, they also stock costumes :) I'm sure we're all sick of seeing Twilight paraphernalia everywhere, and needless to say it is stocked here, but if you can ignore that there are so many other things worth your while that aren't seen in Easons or other book shops! So if you collect or you just like authentic comic books, manga, or especially if you know someone who does - think Christmas, birthdays... - this place would make a great place to browse around for gift ideas. As Shesells said, it is cheaper to buy things on the internet, as is a lot of other things, but it's always nicer to have a shop that sells everything all at your fingertips. read more
