Then there are places that you go to of a night out for some scran because you just bloody love the place. Harun's is one such place. Despite recently painting the shop a rancid orange colour, Harun's remains the best takeaway in Southport for you to greedily stuff your mouth with greasy goodness in the early hours of the morning. The food there is well made and delicious albeit not particularly cheap (damn you Southport) and the staff there are friendly and will happily talk with you for hours about good Turkish footballers (believe me; it happens every week when we go). They also have a punching machine in there (perhaps to curb the violent enthusiasm of the Southport residents) which causes much hilarity at three in the morning when my mates decide to show each other who can hit something the hardest. Harun's je t'aime.

It has recently been refurbished and now offers a larger seating area - it can still get very busy though and often the queues are to the door and people trying to enter and exit can have to battle through small crowds. Recently it sported a very interesting (?) display of red pop bottles at the counter - not sure quite what that was about, but I had noticed it and others around me were commenting on it to - maybe the refurbishment budget hadn't quite stretched as far as they had hoped and they'd had to resort to something extra cheap and cheerful! For such a busy outlet, it is still small even after it's refurbishment and it is a place I would rather choose to do drive-though than sit in (and be seen in!).

And let's just say..I love English food, whether it's take away, pub food, or a posh restaurant!! My frist trip to the Starving Man was the day I arrived from a month study tour in Lucca, Italy and was desperate for a burger....SOMETHING that wasn't pasta or pizza! I had a burger and chips and it was pretty f---ing fit! I think I had fish n chips later in the week! MY FAVE! The other visits have been purely in search of one thing...a kebab! YUM! You can't really get anything like a good kebab in America (that I've found) and I enjoy them! A little lemon juice, ketchup and mayo! It's the great ending to a night out or sitting around my friend's kitchen table having a few glasses of vodka and a spliff! Im back in a week and I'll be sure to spend some of my "pound-age" at the Starving Man!

The reason being is the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. On the weekends it can get busy after hours as the pubs and bars empty and punters look for a quick bite, but everyone always seems in good spirits. The highlights for me are the pizzas, which have a thin, crispy base, and the lamb kebab which is very simple, served with naan, fresh salad and yoghurt sauce. It's good, honest food that you can't go wrong with.

The food quality and service is exceptional and the fact that they don't do deliveries in no way detracts from just how busy this place is. My fave is the Tandoori Mixed Grill with a Dopiaza Sauce (you can have any sauce you like). The price of fame of course is that at busy times you may need to be a little patient. The trick is, phone your order in, if they say 20 mins, turn up in 20 mins and you may wait another 5 mins, Trust me, the food is worth any wait. The other alternative is order when you get there and go to the boozer across the road for a swift one ! The sister restaurant next door "Gatley Cuisine" is also well worth a visit. Check out the website/menus and enjoy.

Both places do have a great reputation and, while they supply reasonable, good quality food, my personal experience is that they are just a little bit average. I think that the reputation stands from a number of years of being a *bit* better than those around - while, especially recently(ish), the target has moved with the opening of new places in Cheadle and others who are providing a more authentic menu rather than the anglicised selections that became popular in the 80's and 90's I'm being a little bit scathing, perhaps, but it's just that I find many of the dishes lack any genuine variety. I have been quite a few times, though, so it's not bad - just not amazing. Portion sizes for the takeaway are huge - those standard takeaway carriers being packed to the brim - and plenty of actual content, it's not all just sauce. I find ordering from the 'exclusive dishes' section tends to yield the most interesting and tasty results - obviously that's just personal. They have also messed up my order on a couple of occasions - so listen carefully when they (rather maniacally) shout what's in your bag. So, worth a go - and still one of the better takeaways in Gatley - but given the various delivery options out there I would say try a few others and looks for the more specialist (e.g. south indian) takeaways and restaurants.

I wasn't too impressed with my experience overall, I found the staff to be a little rude, originally refusing to accept my voucher code despite it being valid as "I had left feedback for a different Subway store", which has never been a problem before. They did originally accept it but said they would never give me a free drink again, which made me feel rather uncomfortable. They seemed to act like they were doing me a favour, after spending a couple of minutes at the till (while my food was going cold), rather than actually honouring a free drink deal which all other Subway's offer. My usual order of a gluten-free tuna, ham and cheese sub with salad was much messier than normal too, prices were a little higher compared to my usual store in Manchester city centre, but this is common with Subway stores tending to charge different locations based on the franchise. They do have an outdoor seating area within the retail park, which is handy if the weather is nice. 2*

Looking fairly banal, but inviting all the same we decided to give it a whirl. And actually we were pleasantly surprised. The kids all had home made pizza's (which were huge especially considering they were child's portions) - no frozen circular cheese on toast you get in some establishments, these were the real deal. A friend had the lasagne (again a nicely sized portion) which they confirmed was tasty; I had a standard burger but even this was cooked really well and satiated my aching tummy within seconds. I laid off the alcohol (slowly recovering from a night out) and chose a really good coffee instead. Service was top notch, nothing was missed and the timings were perfect (I've been to high end restaurants who cock this up with surprising ease and regularity). The kids all had desserts and from the 'empty plate in seconds' routine I guess these hit the spot too. Est Caffe is situated on the top floor of the Arndale and is itself is spread over two, open floors. Good spot to people watch then and of course you get all types of life's rich tapestry wandering through the arndale (the new bitthe bit that works remarkably well). If you're ever in the area and fancy something a little more substantial than a sandwich and coffee, est might just sort you out. It's a chain and they're mostly confined to large shopping malls and airports but I've eaten (and been treated far less well) in far worse places.
