It is a…read morelittle pinky and girly but the interior has a feel of spring even though it was still wintery weather outside. Identical chandeliers and the organised mismatched furniture has a certain charm. The decoration was quite sparse; the kind of place where echoes were almost possible, so after awhile it made the place feel cold when there was no one else except us. If it was not a restaurant, I would have thought that it was a tea house. The cleanliness makes the place feel like a new establishment; clean open kitchen and nicely built bar area. It would be perfect if they had baby changing facilities as well. Ben's restaurant was started with a dream of a man who is concerned about the source of his food. With an acute entrepreneurial sense, he brought the restaurant, Ben's, alive. Ben's is a restaurant with it's own lifestock. The menu boasts the providence and quality of the ingredients. But Bury St Edmunds is in the countryside. So, apart from the chain restaurants, restaurants like this are sort of expected, isn't it? Taking pride of their ingredients, Ben's menu is hence very British. For example, sausage and mash is not just sausage and mash. It has additional accompaniment and a touch of finesse that lifts Ben's restaurant to quite a sophisticated eatery. The main has quite a large selection of meats; game, venison, beef, pork, lamb, fish - and the accompaniment and sauces is also tailored to each separate main. The amount of work in the kitchen, before and during service, must be extensive. On Sundays, it is traditional Sunday roast and pie of the day. Desserts are quite a list as well. roast beef GBP 14.95 - An enormous serving of beef, together with potatoes, yorkshire pudding, peas and a side of cauliflower cheese, served with gravy. The dish looked delicious, but unfortunately the meat, while not bad at all, was nothing special, and the cauliflower cheese was tasteless. salmon salad GBP 12.45 - this was a starter dish but they kindly upgraded it to a main dish portion. It had abundance of smoked salmon and the wasabi mousse was delicious perfect with the salmon. ginger cheesecake GBP 5.95 - very creamy, and not enough of that ginger, obviously home-made, but tasted as if it was mass produced. caramelised pear and spiced ginger sponge, with custard GBP 5.95 - texture was very light and the pudding was warm. However, the ginger bit needs to be a little more gutsy. trio of ice-cream GBP 4.95 - chocolate, elderflower with apple and tayberry. The flavours were very, very good but shame that there were just too many ice crystals in the ice-cream. It wasn't pleasant eating it. Service was very polite and friendly. The meal was very enjoyable but slightly expensive. Each plate was presented well. Mains and desserts came in generous portions. There are little things that could be improved and I thought overall, the meal was mediocre.

The dishes change based on what's available seasonally and it's always great. At lunch the sandwich and soup or salad combinations are always delicious and flavorful. I got duck almost every time it was on the menu and was always amazed with how perfectly it was cooked. We celebrated or engagement and wedding here. We came for dinner after all the craziness with the celebration was over and relaxed knowing we had a great meal coming our way. Every server is kind and helpful if you have any questions and they make amazing recommendations. I always recommend people eat here anytime they mention going to Bury.

The serving staff didn't really know what was being served from the menu. Not once was I asked how my meal was nor did any of the staff really seem to care. Probably won't return based on this experience as the food was not only below par BUT it was expensive. The saving grace was that the Chancellor picked up half of the tab :-)

Sauce was a little salty but went great with the pie which needed salt (probably by design). Cocktails were well made and delicious. Overall not too pricey either. We did not stay at the hotel but it looked lovely. The reason for the missing star was that our server was painfully slow and inattentive. This is not just by our American level of impatience (not proud of that but it's of course true), the locals at tables around us also complained. Bless her heart I'm not sure this is the right business for her to be in. But the eatery is a great place to stop for a bite and a drink after an Abbey Gardens stroll.

The brussel sprouts and bacon were nothing more than a dessert spoon sized dollop of liquidised mush, not the brussel sprouts and bacon that I had asked for, the only dessert I could have was sorbet, which consisted of three teaspoon sized portions two of which were tasteless and one having intense fruit flavour and was very pleasant . the drink I had ordered was Aspall cyder ,a favorite of mine , when I tried it I found it to be extremely dry and sharp certainly not the Aspall cyder I was used to,But this was all they had so I had to put up with it, I believe it is called harry sparrow! well what can I say not the best culinary experience . The cheesy bread was remarkable. The kids loved the oversized sundae with brownie chunks. The birthday girl got a huge brownie, with two scoops of ice cream with the most delicious raspberry coulis. Staff were spectacular, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Free parking is in an adjacent lot.

It's very edible as well, just unexpected. While normally it would be something to avoid it actually maintains a silky texture transforming it from vile to a bit lovely. The Cappuccino, on the flavor side is a little weak, but it's very light and airy, like drinking a cloud. Most of the food has Greek or French roots, and is quite simple. But, that's not a bad thing by any means because the focus seems to be on quality, not extravagance.
