Sugar Island is a cozy used book store, that sells pastries, coffee and a few vintage items and antiques. I loved the store from the moment I walked in, with the quirky ceiling and stacks of old books. There are two floors of books with scattered vintage items here and there. Downstairs, I found the coffee and pastries. I picked up a Raspberry Crisp to take home. All the cookies looked yummy. Upstairs, there are children's books in a section and then other adult books. I could have spent hours browsing. The staff as welcoming and friendly. There is plenty of parking in the little strip mall. This is a fun, independently-owned, place for a book lover to come on a rainy (or sunny) day. read more

Leaving a second review because a 2nd visit was a MUST and it was what I was most excited for when we returned. The service and coffee was just as amazing as the first time. The store owner was so sweet and the cookies were so delicious I might have hidden the last one for myself. We purchased some coffee grounds to enjoy upon our return home and they've are not disappointed so far. Kind of a strange place, not sure what to call it. It's a bookstore primarily but they also sell (key lime) pies, jam, cured meats, and pretty good coffee too. Oh and a classic 1950s styled fridge draped in the American flag for $3500. It's weird but awesome. It gets even better if you go upstairs, it's like a treasure trove of books and random toys that you can just browse and try to pick out something unique. It ranges from children's books to Kurt Vonnegut so you can find just about anything. It's like that warehouse at the end of Indiana Jones where they stash the ark of the covenant except maybe it's smaller and nothing will melt your face off. read more

Not sure it is possible to love this Topsail Island gem more. It is magic. Would you like your coffee downstairs at the old mahogany bar, or next to the old upright piano you can plink along as you sip, playing the quaint beginner sheer music provided. Discovered the upper floor hideaway on our second and final trip leaving town. Play Cranium or Scrabble in a booth or pick from the stacks and curl up in a porch swing. Dress up as a pirate, discover science, or visit Hogwarts or Hobbits corner. Pick a second-hand beach-collection Agatha Christie from among the library card stacks, or a new Chris Colfer for the kids. Their selections are curated for the bibliophile in all of us. This is like a reader's church, and I could while away the hours here with a dreamy oat milk latte. Did I mention their pastries are exquisite, from lemon chewies to Egyptian lace...and all handed over by the nicest bakery barrista librarian who may have read their entire inventory and will ask if you'd like that takeaway box "bedazzled" with ribbon. We were utterly charmed. Spend some time at this sugar-dusted treasure and buy lots and lots of everything. read more

Never been so offended and hurt by asking for Splenda in a Used book store with a coffee bar. I had no clue that this business' niche discriminates against medical disabilities. I just came in because I love cute vintage book stores. I had no clue that everything had sugar in it. I saw books everywhere. And the chick responded that i should bring my insulin to her store. I have wanted to pop in here for a while and finally had the opportunity yesterday after the Autumn with Topsail Festival. I went in with a few friends and they were unfortunately sold out of the pumpkin whoopie pies :-( they open at 12 on Sundays and we were there just a few hours later! The gal working at the register was extremely friendly and helpful. She shared with us that people come in right when they open and stock up for the week. She also shared that everything is made fresh daily and from scratch. Each of us indulged in a raspberry jam bar. I had read some great reviews on them so they were an obvious choice. They certainly did not disappoint! There was a hearty bit of jam in there! Pure deliciousness. I cannot wait to go back and try a pumpkin whoopie pie as well as their spicy pimento cheese. read more

This is absolutely the best place on the island for hiding away for some me time! I got a drink from their café and roamed both floors of books, music, antiques, vintage clothing, art, and home goods and then got bakery and snacks to go home with. I'm enamored with their bumblebee coffee and will be ordering more to ship home! Gosh, this is my favorite bakery in the area! I was introduced to the Jam Bars at Brown Dog Coffee in Burgaw and since I frequently drove 45 minutes to an hour to go to the beach at Surf City, I always stopped in for a treat while there! It's definitely worth the drive! Pleasant staff strike up conversation while you're selecting your favorite food items and you leave happier than when you walked in. This place made my day plenty of times! Cheddar Pigs are a must, trust me! Oh my, the Coconut Macaroons are delightful, too! Of course, I always had to get Jam Bars, these lil' treats are a slice of heaven! Truly, there's nothing I've had from Sugar Island that I didn't like. Baked goods, books and gorgeous little things! There's so much to look at and drool over in Sugar Island. Not only are there delicious baked goods on the first floor, but there are cool spices, teas and kitchen/tea decor. The second floor houses a terrific used bookstore, with little vintage items hiding in nooks among the books. They were open on Saturday and Monday in February--we didn't check on Sunday. We'll definitely return when we're back in Surf City! read more

So if you're obsessed with bakeries and baked goods in general like I am, you'll get really excited when this place pops up on your Google search. You'll also get excited when you arrive and see the sign saying "Sugar Island Bakery and Supplies"....Don't be. As I learned from the person running the business today, they no longer are an actual bakery and stopped calling themselves such "years ago". Which was really news to me because not only is the actual word "bakery" on their signage out front. Also, they come up with menus for baked goods and advertise them for every holiday...? Anyway, great baked goods when you can get them, but don't expect consistency. I acknowledge that I am from a more structured area and my biggest problem since moving down here is that I expect too much from the small businesses and owners. I'm working on it. read more

This place is undeniably the best in surf city. The baked goods are always amazing, and fresh. The coffee is THE ONLY place i would pay for on the island. The selection in their store is phenomenal, i am addicted to their farm fresh eggs. But the atmosphere and the welcome is what really gets you, can you sit and read a myriad of books for hours of course, but you actually feel welcomed here. Need a treasured souvenir or gift, come to Sugar Island they sell local jewelry, cutting boards, kitchen towels, etc. If you are on the island this is a must stop. read more

Stumbled across this little gem while in Topsail. Best coffee on the island. Best baked goods on the island and best atmosphere. This is a cute boutique gift shop and bookstore as well with plenty to browse. I had a vanilla iced coffee that had just a hint of sweet and was so surprisingly good. We tried daily grind too and this places coffee blew them away! We shared a cranberry oatmeal cream pie and a cream cheese pastry. Again so good. This place used to be wonderful. They offered a variety of baked good that were delicious. You could order a cake, pie, or cookies ahead of time and pick it up. Not any more. Their selection is "baker's choice" so there's not dependability on what is available. When I tried to order a cake for my mother's birthday I called during business hours three days in a row and now one ever picked up. I emailed, no one responded. I went in and asked and the young woman said, "we don't take special orders and we never did." Not true, young lady, so simply say you don't do that any longer. They've lost a customer. read more

The atmosphere is wonderful and invites you in. I think it's borderline cluttered/pack rating, but it works for the atmosphere they are trying to create. I sampled several cookies and pastries and can honestly say I didn't like any of them. The cookies were too hard and the pastries were way to sweet. I took everything to go because I was too afraid to eat in the place and accidentally ruin the decor. The customer service was fantastic and the owner/Baker was very knowledgeable. Went here twice during our beach vacation in Surf City and had very positive experiences. First time we ordered a caramel cake and key lime pie for a birthday celebration. Second time we stopped in just after they opened and a line had formed outside before the door was unlocked- always a good sign of popularity! Incredibly delicious light pound cake with caramel between the layers. The scrumptious buttercream frosting was coated with coconut. Such a great flavor combination!! We always frequent Sugar Island Bakery when we are in Surf City. This year, due to covid, they are taking orders online for specific pick-up days. We have had fun trying all sorts of items from our usual order that includes cookies, muffins, jam bars and scones to quiche, local produce, and more. We really appreciate their efforts to be safe during Covid. Love Sugar Island! My personal favorite is their ginger cookie but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Me and my cousin went here for a little dessert in the morning. We got a cinnamon roll, which by the way, was absolutely amazing and really big so that 2 people could share it. The lady who helped us was amazing, she was so thoughtful and inviting, and she recommended to make ourselves at home. We went upstairs, and we were in complete awe. This place was filled with classic books, lots of available seating, and it was so adorable that we wanted to take it home with us. We loved the local art, the fish tank, and the little room filled with various natural beauty products. If you took kids here, they would never want to leave, given the whimsy and amount of children's books that they could read. We are so sad that we have to wait a whole other year to come back!
