I've tried plenty of Italian ice creams served from this type of shop (it must be a Glasgow thing) but Newlands Café wins hands-down. Just don't forget to get some raspberry sauce on top! There is something nostalgic about this cafe, which is why I always order Bovril to drink and vanilla ice cream, despite the range of other drinks and flavours. The menu isn't extensive, and this is more like a sweet shop with cafe attached at times: it never gets busy, and isn't that great to sit in with more than three other people.

The Queens Cafe is a nice wee cafe too, with little red booths and an art deco set up that automatically makes you think of the 50s when Glasgow was littered with little places like this. The cafe is all but the same as it was when my dad was a young man, and the food, drinks and ice cream are all much the same as well. A few years ago the Independent did a list of the top 50 ice cream parlours in Glasgow and there was the Queens Cafe, pride of place in the list. Grab yourself an ice cream and take a nice wander in the Queens Park. A summers day gets little better than that.

Every time I've passed it previously, it's been mega busy. And last night was no exception. They have quite a fair selection of weird and wonderful ice creams and waffley type things - ferrero rocher, cyrly wurly, daim ice creams for example. I decided on a scoop of curly wurly, strawberry cheesecake and mint choc chip. Not the cheapest ice crem I've ever had - but well worth it. All of them were awesome - not too creamy, not too icey. And tasted perfect! When you go in, it's really dark - but by no means dingy. Once you order, you'll be given a ticket number which is called when your order is ready.

The only way these could have been better is by having streaky bacon rather than British bacon, but still tasty. I love that they hit brought the jug of maple syrup to the table, usually you have to beg borrow and steal at places to get more! Ben got a side of macaroni cheese because, why not. And he enjoyed it thoroughly, just the right amount of creaminess to the cheese. Very reasonably priced, great food, lovely staff. It's such a quaint little place, try it if you haven't already, you won't be disappointed!

Be it a roll and sausage to cure your hangover; a cold roll as a packed lunch for work or a selection of sweeties to bribe someone's kids with - this place will have a very good range of choice for you. The prices are excellent so you won't be breaking the bank. This will also allow you to get some breakfast/lunch rolls as well as a cheeky quarter of lemon sherbets. Oh yeah. From my experience, it's always fairly quiet. This is slightly odd considering how tasty and cheap the food is (I put this down to the quietness of the area in general), but it does mean you'll get fast service. It also has a good range of opening hours (I got up at crazy o'clock this morning, thus the very shut look of it in my photo) so you'll have ample time to get your supplies for here. I managed to find the Southside by train to Queen's Park Station and it's only a 5 minutes hop, skip and jump to The Rum Shack. I was unfortunately in still a bit of pain from the Kiltwalk so think I didn't get to enjoy the experience as much as I had hoped. We were seated on stools at 2 separate high tables. I think I was craving a normal seat, which are available by the way. The menu had a fairly nice varied choice of Caribbean dishes, some with a Scottish twist. So I opted for the Haggis Balls to kick off this food night. The starter was absolutely delicious, the sauce wasn't too hot and with a pleasant amount of sweetness to compliment my balls. Oh yeah! OK, so they were actually "fritters". I felt some of the menu for me was a bit on the spicy side so opted for the vegetarian dish of Cuban black bean and rice with fried plantain and sweet potatoes. I have to say it was very different but quite palatable. It was lovely décor and the staff could not be any more helpful, they were very accommodating and polite. I'm not sure I would venture back here as I felt there was nothing else on the menu I would really try, I think it would be nice to swing by for some drinks as they have a fully stocked bar and I'm sure there's a rum lurking in there somewhere that I may like. The service was quick and after ordering the waitress brought over a bottle of their house chilli sauce with a warning that it was incredibly hot - she wasn't lying! It was lovely though, not sure if they do, but they should sell it by the bottle. The menu was small which I find a welcome sign, I always hope this means the kitchen have perfected the few dishes they list and I was not disappointed. To start we had Accra and Popcorn Prawns, the prawns were nice and came with a tasty sauce but the Accra was the definite winner for the starter. For our mains we had Jerk Pit Fish of the Day and Jerk Pit Pork belly, both came with corn on the cob and rice and peas. The jerk seasoning was great, and had a good heat to it, as you would expect. The rice was well cooked and well seasoned and the fish tender and flakey. I could have done with an extra corn on the cob - that dipped in their hot sauce was a highlight for the veggie lover in me. Not eating meat personally, I never tried the pork belly, however I was told it was delicious. It's not far from a top rating for me (I'd give it 4 and a half if I could), the only downfalls I found were the atmosphere little a lacking, probably down to the time of day we visited, between lunch and dinner. I think it would be a great evening trip. I found the material of the plates a little distracting, it felt a little like eating off of paper plates. Over all I'd recommend it, I'll definitely be back to eat here again!

Less than 10 minutes later I was almost £10 poorer and was carrying a huge bag of goodies that would actually have fed an entire family, not just me. I manfully struggled through most of it but alas, I ended up leaving a fair bit of it as I was full to bursting. Tasty food, great portions, friendly and helpful staff. The food is traditional, authentic and vegetarian and hasn't got that restaurant taste to it. What I mean by that is that it tastes like something you'd make at home (if you were any good at cooking curries that is), which, for me is the best!! Everyday the Dhaal and Sabji's change which ensures the food is fresh and seasonal. The portion sizes are huge and for the money its outstanding value. If only this place was a little closer to home, I'd easily be there at least once a week for my dinner. Yum!

The menu in the main restaurant changes regularlty but usually has quite a strong seafood theme. On our recent visit the food was quite simply from the very top drawer. Huge tasty scallops, a delicious salmon steak, but best of all was the halibut, which I'd never tried before but can be best described as a really meaty fish, and superlatives can't really describe how good it tasted. It was topped with these caramelised shredded onions that had it not been for my low embarrasment / awkwardness threshold, I'd have asked the chef how to make at home. From the rest of my review you can probably tell what I'll say about the iced coconut and bitter chocolate dessert, and even though the restaurant is undoubtedly quite expensive at about £18 a main course, I'd still say it's definite value for money, and a lot cheaper if you go earlier for the pre-theatre. As well as the main restaurant there's also a new wine bar which offers a slightly less fancy menu, and does lunch and breakfast as well. Although it's nice to sit in (I've only had drinks but have little doubt the food will be excellent), I'm slightly worried they've over-extended themselves by opening up this area. It's in a huge, brand new extension, and has effecxtively tripled the size of the place. For a restaurant that was doing well as it was, I'm not really sure why this was needed, especially as it's location in a quiet suburban part of the city means you have to really be making a conscious effort to come here rather than simply be "passing trade". Anyway, it's one of the best places I've ever eaten anywhere never mind Glasgow, and is a couple of doors down from Cathcart Station. There's no excuse not to try it.

I have dined in here a few times: once in the main restaurant section and two or three times in the wine bar section which has a more basic (e.g. bog standard) menu. My first experience of Barbarossa in the main restaurant was fantastic, if a bit pricey. Admittedly, the I am not used to forking out quite so much for a nice meal out. But, it really was worth it! I had an amazing prawn starter (and trust me, I've eaten prawns in many a restaurant). The prawns were cooked just right - not rubbery at all - and in a lively subtle but tasty sauce which didn't over power them nor leave them bland. For a meal, I had steak with perfectly cooked vegetables on the side. Absolutely delicious. Meanwhile, my companion had a lamb chop with veg which I was lucky even to taste. Hence, why if I was going back I'd be very tempted to opt for the lamb. However, the other occasions I have eaten here have not been so great. The wine bar section offers a decent selection on the menu (though it is mostly pasta, risotto and the basic run-of-the-mill Italian stuff) for a much more reasonable price. This should make it ideal for a relaxed and decent budget lunch towards the end of the month or when you're saving up for that holiday. Instead, you end up paying around £8-10 for a dish of poorly cooked pasta (soggy, anyone?), in a rather bland sauce. This gives the strong impression that the ingredients are not the freshest or the highest in quality. Meanwhile, for the bistro type experience, you are paying around £14 for a bottle of wine. Hence, it's still a bit too pricey but in this section the food is definitely not worth it. Furthermore, the staff seem to make a very clear distinction between diners in the restaurant and bar sections. Having dined in both, I was shocked and rather annoyed by the customer service the staff executed in the bar and, indeed, the manner in which they did. So, to conclude, if you are after a pricey but amazing meal then the restaurant area in this venue is probably the best around locally. However, if you are looking to spend a little less and still receive a good quality of cooking then give the wine bar/bistro section a miss. Instead, a preferable less pricey and good quality alternative would be The Battlefield Rest about a ten minute walk away.
