This is the only Thai restaurant in Monterrey that comes close to meeting my expectations for quality and flavor. You're going to pay for it though, and the restaurant is small and not very comfortable.
Also, no papaya salad, and I think they would make a great one! (Maybe green papaya isn't widely available as it has been removed from other local menus as well.)
Sukhothai carries a good selection of curries, soups, and cold salads. The flavors are good and seem fresh, and in some cases they've added in Mexican ingredients to round out dishes that may be lacking something? Or to seem more familiar to their clientele? They also lack or limit use of vegetables, mushrooms, and fresh fillers and flavors.
I'm a big fan of their shredded cucumber salad (reminds me a bit of my beloved papaya dish). The flavors are bright and fresh, and the ribbons of carrot hold up better than the cucumber which gets limp with the tart dressing. It is served with beautiful, delicious shrimp that hold up well with the sauce. I've had the dish quite a few times, and they seem to have added an excessive amount of grains of corn that don't do much for the dish. I wonder if they would add something if they were grilled, or if they relied less on them? It also has toasted whole peanuts that aren't too flavorful.
I recently had their pad thai which has traditional rice noodles as a base (they advertise Thai "sweet noodles" on their adverts). It can be ordered with shrimp or chicken. It has chopped, toasted peanuts that add a lot to the flavor and traditional lime wedges. The sauce is okay, but seems more focused on sweet than flavor. It may have had tamarind or red chili, but the flavors didn't come out. The sauce may also be too thin to impact the texture of the dish. I missed crunchy bean sprouts and green scallions. The chicken in it was good, tender and not too dry (often the case in Monterrey), and it may have been grilled as there was a slightly smoky flavor. The tofu had a good texture, slightly crunchy on its edges.
The restaurant is in an area with a lot of restaurants and can get crowded, but they do take out, and you can order via Uber Eats. read more
