Lack of Internal Communication & Preparation: After explicitly requesting a DV-informed attorney, I was paired with an attorney ("Mario") for my dissolution case. Despite meeting with him multiple times in person and spending hours discussing my case on the phone, he later claimed during a critical discussion that he did not know why he was my assigned attorney and had to check the retainer agreement. He then insisted on initiating a Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO)--completely unaware that I had already successfully filed and secured a DVRO on my own six months prior. Contradictory and Conflicting Counsel: My case was subsequently reassigned to another attorney ("Tia"). After a consultation regarding my situation, both her and Amanda Hills primary strategy was to advise me to relocate out of state to establish jurisdiction elsewhere. However, during a subsequent court appearance in San Diego, this same counsel falsely stated to the court that she had not heard from me, despite my extensive, saved records of our text communications and receipts. Unsubstantiated and Excessive Billing: The most egregious aspect of this firm's service is its billing. My initial retainer was completely exhausted, and I received an additional invoice for nearly $9,000.00, despite no meaningful legal progress being made on my case. When I requested an itemized, broken-down invoice to account for these charges, the firm was completely unable or unwilling to provide one. The sole positive element of my interaction with this office was the front desk secretary, Sophia, who was consistently kind and courteous. If you are dealing with complex, high-stakes family law issues, I strongly advise looking elsewhere for a firm that offers transparent billing, thorough case preparation, and reliable representation.

In this, they failed completely. I provided them with extensive documentation going back over 20 years, establishing every cent and its rollovers. Despite this, Van Clief allowed me to get "hosed" on a technicality: most financial institutions do not keep detailed statements beyond 10 years. However, they do keep rollover documentation (amounts, funds, dates, and times), which creates a legal trail. Instead of working with the documentation I provided, they caved to the opposing party's demands because it was easier. Critically, they still get paid either way. Van Clief is quick to say, "We're an independent party, we follow the numbers." In my case, this was just plausible deniability. It felt like a classic case of "don't know, don't care, we still get our check." This lack of care became increasingly apparent when trying to finalize matters. and run-of-the-mill questions. Like many clients, I have a Will and Trust. When I asked them questions about this, it took over a week to get any kind of response. And when they finally did respond, it was buried in a ridiculous form of "legalese" that would make a 17th-century law clerk shake their head. In short: Arrogance. The judge had to put her back into her place. I was more than embarrassed for HER. After 4 weeks we were at $18000 and she and her team had not accomplished anything. I could not proof it but I felt that she overcharged and double charged me on a lot of things. She always said that it got more expensive because the other party got a lawyer.... He also criticized "whoever wrote this agreement" but my elderly family member had paid him a year ago to review the agreement in question and had succeeded in getting his recommended changes incorporated into it. He insisted on trusting the opposing party to act ethically while being advised that this was unlikely to happen, and then was forced to concede (by his actions--he never apologizes) that the advice given to him was right. I even had an instance where he argued with me on a legal point in the California Probate Code and he had to admit it was something new to him (but of course no apology was forthcoming). In my opinion Mr Gutman talks over people, imposes his own views on the conversation, and treats questions as challenges. But the bills keep coming!
