Since it is located on the 5th floor of Kamppi Square and has floor to ceiling windows, the views are reeeeal nice. The boyfriend and I came for lunch at 11:30am on a Friday and were seated without a reservation after we placed our order and paid at the counter. I tried the Kalua Pork & Tiger Prawns (14€) while the boyfriend went with the Salmon Teriyaki (15€) after reading the glowing reviews on here. The Kalua Pork dish was super tasty and had more broth than I was expecting; I was glad it came with a bowl of rice. The salmon was SO moist with a teriyaki sauce that wasn't too overbearing! Needless to say we finished both our dishes without a bite to spare. The portions are medium-sized. If you come starving, it may not be enough to make you feel 100% satiated. However, the sophisticated atmosphere and unique & flavorful dishes made Hoku a great experience.

That aside, the interior reminds me of the sushi shacks in San Fran or NY. It's awfully zen in there and at the same time manages to be warm and cozy enough that you forget you just almost froze your tits off walking a block to get here from the shopping centers. It's super close to Stockmann, Forum, and Kamppi but far enough away that there aren't irritating crowds and lines to wait in (why are there always lines in this city?? Shrimp was very good with vermicelli and fresh coriander! And there are too many times I've had a half-assed miso soup but Mizu's was great. I also ordered Matcha Latte (€4,50) with soymilk (+€0,50) which was perfect and came with some green tea and ginger-flavoured crispy rice snacks. I don't normally enjoy puffed rice but I could easily eat a bag of these. All of the gluten-free and lactose-free menu items are marked. Two of my friends got the teriyaki chicken donburi and pork donburi and both said they were happy with it. Looked great! We also tried the An Danish (€3,50) which was sweet red bean paste in a flaky pastry. I am not a fan of red bean but this was perfectly moist and not too sweet. Makes me feel like I'm back in Japan. Do yourself a favour and visit this cafe!

The Ebi furai is my favorite, so definitely get an order of it with whatever you are getting. Great California rolls as well. I had the fried Gyoza which were perfectly crunchy and juicy inside. Can't wait to go again and try some of the main dishes (Beef Tataki sounds great!) I wish we lived closer as we would surely get take out all the time. I'm sure our wallets thank us though. It is perhaps not beautiful but it does have some rugged charm despite the hockey memorabilia put up here and there on the wall. I like the small booths as well as the seating on the tatami mats. The service is to put it nicely typically Finnish. I would not per se say that they are rude but you could almost believe that they would die if they smiled or looked as if they were enjoying their jobs. That said they served the food, made sure to answer any questions and made sure beverages were refilled and all that at a good pace. The menu has all the Japanese dishes one can expect so not only the boring sushi and yakiniku options but also some good stuff like Katsudon (fried pork with egg and onions on top of rice) as well as Tonkatsu. These are the real highlights on the menu, some of the other dishes are disappointing so stick to those as well as some of the sushi and the delicious Tamagoyaki (a sort of egg roll) and you will be happy. The food is by no means superb Japanese food but good enough for me to perhaps return. Prices level is fair to be Finland.
