The business address dropped me into a strip mall with a simple sign that said "massage" and no specific naming. I opened the door to a rousing chiming of multiple bells on the door, looked left and saw a sewing machine ready for action. Hmm...is this the right place? I faint voice called from the back saying ..."you here for the 11 o'clock? Why you not ask for one hour? Only half hour not a lot of time." I apologized as I didn't know how booked she may be, and calling the morning of, often you take what you can get. She guided me into a room decorated on light pink motif and I happened to notice steel pipes hanging from the ceiling forming a "rack" over the massage table...yep this was no spa treatment... I quickly disrobed and got comfortable under my thin massage sheet and waited for Miss Julie to enter. I quickly reviewed my issues with my tight hips, glutes and back. I happened to look over to the table next to me at what could be described as a masochist kit at best. There were blades, knobs and clubs all ready to go. Oh lord.... I laid face down and I could sense Julie climbing up and grabbing the steel poles above the table and starting to use pressure of her toes and heels to work free tension across most all of my body. It felt amazing. So far so good. Often she would find extra tension points, which would cause her to go into her kit and grab a blade and begin scraping out the striations of tissue on tissue to get separation. It looked like the next appointment wasn't showing so I was able to bonus an extra 30 minutes. Julie continued to seek out tension areas and attacked them like a predator after prey. I completed my massage feeling 100 times better than when I walked in and pledged to Julie that I would be back next week. It's not much to look at walking up, and is NOT a relaxation spa experience, but if you need deep tissue massage and want someone to work you over good, Julie is your gal!

Some of the small, thoughtful touches that made the spa special--like being offered hot tea--are gone. Using the locker rooms to store your belongings and freshen up before you leave is no longer an option either. Instead, you're given a basket and required to awkwardly carry all of your personal belongings with you throughout the visit. One of the biggest disappointments was how they handled our group's experience. While some of us were receiving massages and facials, they had booked a private steam and sauna appointment at the same time. Because of this, one member of our party was demanded to leave the spa in her robe and told she could either wait in the public waiting area or leave the building entirely. They claimed they had nowhere for her to relax while waiting for her next service. I find this completely inappropriate for a spa setting. A guest should never be put in a position where they have to leave in a robe and slippers or redress entirely because of poor scheduling. We had scheduled extra time at the end of our day for steam and sauna, specifically so we could access the locker rooms, yet the way the scheduling was handled made it feel like we were being rushed in and out with no opportunity to truly relax. Had we known, we would have happily scheduled additional time in between services to ensure our entire party could enjoy the spa together without being pushed out. Udånder did acknowledge this was an oversight on their part, but it was a disappointing experience nonetheless. On a positive note, the aesthetician, was outstanding--a true expert in her craft, and I highly recommend her (I wish I could remember her name) . However, if you visit, just know that the value of the overall experience isn't what it used to be. Expect to feel rushed, with no real place to transition in between services. Sadly, the thoughtful, relaxing atmosphere that once made Udånder so special just isn't there for me anymore.
