Review stated that the water supply is contaminated by an upstream mining operation and that the fish from the reservoir were inedible.. That was very disappointing to hear. I would love to give this place for five stars because it is beautiful and we had an excellent time there, but because of the possibility of contaminated fish, I cannot do so in good conscious

Quiet hours are clearly stated as 10 PM to 7 AM ,and we all signed a contract agreeing to that. I contacted the park office, only to later be told I should have called the sheriff instead. The ranger did absolutely nothing during the night. This morning the ranger spoke to my neighbor and then came to tell me that I could move -- even though I followed all the rules. The noisy neighbors were allowed to stay. If I wanted peace and quiet, apparently I was the one expected to relocate. When I asked the neighbor why he couldn't control his dog, he said, "What do you want me to do, tape its mouth shut?" That says everything about the kind of pet owner he is. It's unbelievable to punish someone who's been here peacefully for 10 days while allowing a dog to bark all night and disturb the entire campground. If you stay here, bring earplugs -- because management won't help. I'm giving two stars only because I enjoyed my stay before the neighbors from hell showed up.

Gaviota allegedly takes its name from Spanish soldiers who killed a seagull while camping there in 1769, though that story might be for the birds. Of the 2000 acres of backcountry, the steep Gaviota Peak Fire Road (2.5 miles from entrance) lleads to small sulfur springs, open to the public. Overlook Fire Road is a three mile round trip up a hill for a view of the Channel Islands. It's not typical of campgrounds I'm used to (like in Tahoe) where the sites are separate and there is some level of privacy. This is literally just a parking lot and there's some dirt behind the parking spot for you to pitch a tent. I can't really knock it because that's often typical of beach campgrounds. But just not my style. On the positive, it's like a 2 minute walk to the beach and it's nice to be next to the ocean. It does get a bit windy, so be aware of that. As an en route campground it's definitely not worth the $50 unless you need to shower. Probably should have just slept at a nearby vista point. But I can see it being great for families with kids who want to have beach time and then just walk back to the campsite.

A cute touch is the morning juice bar! I only took away the 5th star because the pictures show an ocean view - but 3 years ago an apartment complex was built blocking it. Here, you will stay in a trailer (possibly an Airstream or something like an Airstream) and you are probably a 10 minute walk to the beach. Beat that. If you have ever stayed in a trailer, you know it's tight quarters. But you get your own kitchen and bathroom and it's a heckuva lot more fun than a bland, stale hotel room. The site has firepits. Even better, they give you complimentary s'more kits with all the fixings. They have BBQs for grilling. They give you cookies and yogurt in the morning. They even give you oranges so you can squeeze your own orange juice. I don't drink orange juice normally but the juice here was outstanding. They have books and games available for borrowing. They have hammocks and swings and picnic tables. They have bikes for free rental. They have freshly-baked cookies that are delicious. There is apple cider and hot chocolate. There are a lot of amenities here which you simply will not find at most hotels. The train runs right by here and it's loud and shocking at first but it doesn't come by that often and you get used to it. Inside the trailer, aside from the train, the grounds are extremely quiet. This is a fun place and something different. The location is great and you get a lot of value for your money.

We experienced a high of 84 and one of the nights it was down at 52! We did read that it gets cold at night so luckily we brought warm clothes to sleep in. Having a beanie and warm blankets helped get through the cold nights. Second night was a low of 64, so that wasn't too bad. I like to book my campsite as close as possible to the restrooms to make the trips short, but just an FYI, these restrooms have a really bad smell. The restrooms are kept very clean, but the smell comes from the vent. We could smell that stuff from our campsite, so I would recommend choosing a spot not too close to these restrooms. The campsites looked very nice in size, there was some distance between sites. I like my privacy and I like that there were many small trees providing tons of shade and separation from neighbors. The sites have a BBQ pit and a fire pit. Unfortunately a fire restriction was placed the day before we arrived so we couldn't use either or. They allowed us to use a gas stove. There is no running water as mentioned so we brought extra to drink, wash dishes, and shower. They do sell water at the site, but it is very expensive so be sure to bring a lot of water.
