The first time I passed by this elaborate display a few years ago, I thought it was certainly bold of someone to hold a holiday garage sale on a patch of public land. Then when I saw it up close, I thought it was the handiwork of a local church since I didn't see any animatronic Santa waving at me. Exactly a year ago, by sheer coincidence, I was in the real Bethlehem which is now a busy, tourist-infested city on the West Bank, but the spirit of brotherhood was resonate and prevalent, especially when it makes economic sense for all concerned. So this year, I walked by this annual display with a more informed sense of what Sundar Shandi was trying to do. As a Sikh, he must have enjoyed conveying the message of brotherhood for others to enjoy because he decided to become an expert In papier-mache in order to recreate the spiritual feeling of the Holy Land. It's an admirable accomplishment for just one person. This is the 70th anniversary of this display though I understand it's been on this hillside only since Shandi's passing in 2001. OK, I get it now. RELATED - Celebrating the holidays? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed in the spirit of sharing: http://bit.ly/39aT63N

I 'm not sure what's more fascinating: The rebirth of the town of Bethlehem on the top of a hill in El Cerrito, or the story of the man, who wasn't even Christian, who created and maintained it for 50 years. I guess it doesn't matter; I enjoy seeing it on cold December nights.

Rescue pigeons and doves, Berkeley Humane with cats and puppies available for adoption, 3-D Theater tent, karaoke, face & body art, an artisan and art fair, massage tents, magic shows, balloon artists, the Big Bubble People (creating giant bubbles for the kids as well as bubble play), judo demos, taiko drumming performances, lots of dance routines, and plenty of live music entertainment, at least one stage/tent on every block with different bands playing throughout the day, in addition to youth orchestras... and there were a LOT of blocks that seemed to never end (I was planning to watch The Long Walk later that day, and felt like I was actually living it here before even seeing the film). Community organization booths included the Happy Day montessori school and Child Therapy Institute, among others. And there was no shortage of food and drink options to grab a snack or meal, a combination of local brick-and-mortar businesses along the street as well as food trucks and vendor tents serving anything and everything, from mediterranean bites to asian fusion to cajun cuisine, along with classic dishes like pizza, hot dogs, and loaded fries. I picked up lunch from Tante's food stand and enjoyed a delicious hot link and potato-spinach knish. The only downsides to this event were the crowds, making it hard to move around at times, and the parking situation which was difficult in the surrounding neighborhood streets.

I took Bart to Downtown Berkeley then walked 6 blocks to the event, it's a good mile or so. Got my tixs at the Tickets & Chalk Registration and inside was 10 tickets that I could use on whatever was on the Chocolate Menu brochure. They had a bunch of vendors that were offering chocolates and drinks for a certain amount of tickets. I got: Caravaggio Gelateria Italiana Vegan chocolate hazelnut raspberry sorbet - 4 tix and Tcho milk chocolate gelato 3 tixs. It's cheaper to buy them instead of the tickets, but since it was Free for me I picked those. Delicious gelato & sorbet, I've had their stuff before so I know I like them. then I should have just gotten the Snicker Bar at Lucky 7 for 2 tix and the last tix for raffle, but I didn't. I picked Lush Gelato Chocolate Cayenne Gelato for 3 tix - it was way too spicy, but finished it up. There was a bunch of chalk art, I didn't stick around long enough to see every one of them. The special artist's chalk is $10 or BYO. Cash prizes were $150, 100, 50 and runners-up get a $25 gift certificate from Books Inc. I think it'll would have been fun to invite a friend instead of having that much chocolate oh well. Thanks Yelp for the tixs!! If I ever get tickets again I would go again!! More chocolate for me.

The 20th Annual Jazz on Forth Festival took place on Sunday 5/17/15 from 11AM to 5PM. I was on my way to have breakfast brunch with my dinner crew and seen all the stages and booth set up! It was such a delight. They had two music stages: One near Bette's Diner and the other near the Pasta Shop. Both stages were playing great music and had a lovely band that had me swinging my hips back and forth. They had tons of food booths even Bette's Diner selling many different varieties of foods such as: Corn on the cob, Pizza, BBQ and hotdogs. They even had a free photo booth from Photolabatory.com which is a photo print lab! Although I didn't get a chance to take a free photo I will definitely look for that booth next year! I will definitely be back to this again next year! It was tons of fun and so many venders! WAY TO GO JAZZ ON FOURTH!
