Doud's is a small market, but it has lots of stuff. As far as I know, this is one of the only markets on Mackinac Island. There actually is another Doud's down Main Street toward the ferry area, but it's a smaller grab-and-go convenience store, mostly with snacks and coffee. My hotel was right across the street, so I bopped into Doud's a couple of times during my stay, to grab a bottle of wine (they have a decent selection of wine), some candy for my kids, and some fruit because I needed to eat something fresh. The store is tidy and everything is arranged nicely. They also have self-checkout kiosks, so you can get in and out quickly.

Apparently it started off as an IGA, but then broke away from the franchise and blossomed into what it is today. I love going to grocery stores when I'm in a different city, because they always have products that aren't available at home. So the last time my husband and I were in The Soo, I dragged him into the rental car to go check out Pino's and now he raves about it even more than I do, lol. It's huge like a Loblaws or Superstore, but has the feel of more like a Farm Boy or a Whole Foods. It has a great bakery section with fresh baked donuts! The prepared food section has lots of variety. We were growing tired of eating out so much on our trip so we bought a bunch of stuff to eat back at our hotel room. Whenever people talk about The Soo, I always bring up Pino's Get Fresh and The Burger Don as my two favourite places there ;)

Ie In the south, or bigger cities you will find sour cream is 1.99 - this store $2.50! That is just 1 item. Cheese is also over priced with similarly higher prices. Milk & sugar is same as south for obvious reasons. No Name vegetable or bean cans, priced at .99 down south is $1.25-$1.50 here. That is NO NAME! The produce is stupidly high priced considering we are surrounded by Amish & Mennonites who sell cheap at this time too. ie Amish cabbage price -$2-3.00 each any size. However, Value-mart in it's stupidity is 1.29 per pound. Cabbages can be $5-6 or more depending on size. Are you getting the picture here? Farmers markets & roadside stands are much better than these 2 stores. Broccoli & cauliflower as well as more are also similarly over priced. Selections are so so at best. They are both small stores. The same people own the Thessalon Value-mart which has the exact same over pricing & gouging. There is NO value at these VALUE MARTS. NONE, ZILTCH, ZERO. Even bread is 2 for $6.00 be warned, shopping here is a gouge. Neither store is really very affordable by regular folks who have no choice of where to shop if they can't get out of town to a bigger facility, ie Basics. Side note - other closest facility to shop is A No Frills in Elliot Lake at least price the No Name stuff correctly. There is a Foodland aka Sobey's there as well for variety.
