What a cozy little market! This is the type of place where you'll find necessities and name-brand items, but also local products, gourmet foods, produce (including rutabagas, for some reason), beer and liquor and wine, lots of snacks and candy, a frozen food section, and even a hot food area. Doud's is a small market, but it has lots of stuff. As far as I know, this is one of the only markets on Mackinac Island. There actually is another Doud's down Main Street toward the ferry area, but it's a smaller grab-and-go convenience store, mostly with snacks and coffee. My hotel was right across the street, so I bopped into Doud's a couple of times during my stay, to grab a bottle of wine (they have a decent selection of wine), some candy for my kids, and some fruit because I needed to eat something fresh. The store is tidy and everything is arranged nicely. They also have self-checkout kiosks, so you can get in and out quickly. read more

Since our last visit, Doud's purchased the storefront next door and expanded the shop. If you forgot something, they have an aisle with toiletries and over-the-counter medicines. My niece and I went to this market around 8:40pm on Tuesday, May 12th. The only cashier- was being horrible to all of the customers. A man wanted to check out with her and she snapped at him and said "you can't do that right now because I'm doing a gift certificate." You do NOT talk to customers like that!!!!!! Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite places on the island. There's simply something so cozy and comforting about going to Doud's and knowing you'll find anything you're looking for. Doud's is the perfect spot to get essentials before a picnic on Mackinac! My boyfriend and I always grab drinks and fresh pizza slices or sandwiches before we venture over to Marquette Park. We recently stayed on the island for the first time and we loved how convenient Doud's is! When I say Doud's has everything .... I mean everything. Chips, dip, fresh meat and produce, hair products, baked goods, everything! I went there for breakfast. For under $3 you can get a sausage egg and cheese biscuit. Cheaper than McDonalds but so much tastier. Doud's also is the oldest grocery store so how cool is that??! Prices are pretty reasonable too. This is the only grocery store in town and it's a great one. In addition to groceries, they also have a grill in the back, salad bar and ready-made food. COVID-19 Review- Doud's is a great option for purchasing picnic items or anything you forgot to bring with you on your vacation. Prices are higher (as they must be shipped into the island) but overall, I was impressed with the items available. Highly recommend you go and purchase picnic items and take them to the Mission Point lawn or space at the end of downtown (the 'beachy' area). I felt confident with management as I saw them taking COVID-19 precautions seriously. They refused to serve someone who refused to wear a mask (which is a statewide mandate). read more

Everyone told us to get take out and eat a picnic lunch on the lawn on mackinac for lunch. First of all? They don't tell you there are 2 locations-one in the center of town that is much smaller and one that is at the end of the downtown area near Ft. Mackinac. The one near the fort is much larger and had more options for sure. Highly suggest the larger store for a picnic lunch; however, expect to spend extra. I'm sure it costs extra to ship goods to the island and we didn't feel like it was price gouging. read more

These moldy Ham and Cheese Italian pretzel bun sandwiches were in Doud's Market on Mackinac Island on Tues., 9-20-22. I brought one up to the cashier so she could take appropriate action. When I went back the next day--Wed., 9-21, one of the Doud's moldy sandwiches was still there! (The mold is growing on the ham and cheese.) What amazing little market to grab some food so you don't have to eat out the entire time. It sucks it's on the island because the city doesn't have any markets worth grabbing anything from. The prices are pretty good for it being on an island and so north. It's also cool it's the oldest market in the USA. They have many different things from pizza slices to dozen and great items you can grab on the go. The staff is friendly and very helpful. They have self scans and a cashier if you need one. I would for sure next time grab everything I need the first day from here so I don't have to take the boat over every time I need something. read more

This is an unreal story. So I purchased 3 panini's: ROASTED CHICKEN AND ARTICHOKE, SOUTHWEST TURKEY MELT, HAM AND TURKEY MELT. All were huge and delicious! I also picked up a small pack of pasta salad (fresh, very good). I also purchased 2 waters and a large diet coke with ice. Both cashiers made mention of a lanyard I was wearing and we joked. I spent $39 plus change. I went just outside on the bench and proceeded to wear everything out. I loved it! A guy from Chicago area told me I had to try this place and he was spot on. Ok, so here's the tailspin to this review: I returned to the market 10 minutes after leaving to get another large diet coke. I came to the front to pay for it. One of these same cashiers told me I needed to purchase at least $3 to use my credit card. I asked her how much the large diet coke cost. $2.50 was the answer. Then a stare at me like I am supposed to give you more $$$$Money. GOOD-BYE! Disgusted, I left the drink there and said for her to have a nice day. LOVED Doud's! We stopped here every day of our 3 day trip to the Island. The best part about the market was the variety and prices. Honestly this market had as many varieties of groceries as my local market in Royal Oak! The prices were the same too, which impressed me the most. For being the only market on the island, I was expecting super inflated prices but everything was incredibly reasonably priced. The market had a variety of beer, wine & liquor which is what we used Doud's for twice on our trip. In the back of Doud's there is a grab & go pizza bar (which looks great) and a counter for deli sandwiches and larger pizzas. We ordered two sandwiches (roast beef and turkey) - both were phenomenal but the speed of the staff working the counter was horrible. They were slow, didn't acknowledge waiting customers and had no sense of urgency. The quality and taste were so good I still give Doud's a 5 star rating. We were able to take our sandwiches for a picnic nearby (the park or marina). read more

What a great affordable find on Mackinac island! We discovered the pizza slices at the back of the store. They were less than $4 each. It was very quick service & the pizza was good. We were on a 50 minute wait for a restaurant that was going to be a minimum of $25 each. I went back later in the day for a snack. They have tons of premade sandwiches, salads, and things like that that are perfect for a picnic. Doud's Market has been around itself since 1884 and has just about everything you'd expect to find at a typical grocery store. Cereal, boxed pastas, chips, beer, soda, baked goods, fresh meat in the deli, plus hot food served at the back end café and deli. There are also some non food ideas available for sale, including mops. Brooms, cleaning supplies, and so forth. Stop in for dinner supplies, or a quick snack, they have it. Just know, you're on the island and going to pay island prices which can range from $1-$3 more per item than the cost on the main land. read more

There is a large selection of meat and cheese trays, pizza by the slice, tons of salads and other items to grab and have a picnic in the park which is right next to the market. This is the only market on the island, so of course its a must see! I expected it to be much smaller but they have a great array of options and hot and cold food ready to go. We came in here to avoid a pricey lunch at one of the restaurants on main street. They had a pizza section, a whole salad bar, tapenade station, and a fridge section of sandwiches and potato salad like things. I am vegan and they had a tofu curry dish which I still crave to this day. Please don't get rid of it!!! Really cool to see all the local Michigan food options that they have stoked and support in there. Would recommend if you are looking for a different type of lunch or dinner. Well. You have one grocery store on a tourist island. The least you can do is be nice to people. They came here to have a good time. I 'had to' visit the corner counter ,where they keep liquor, twice. And the experience was less then unpleasan both time consistently. Doud's is a great place to pick up snacks, drinks or those things you just want to have in your room. They do sell a lot of beverages, including Beer, wine and liquor. The great thing about them is if you want to go have a picnic, you can buy sandwiches and salads already made and everything you need to go along with it. Then you just take them along with you on your bike ride or walk and find a great place to sit and enjoy your food. Remember that everything has to come to the island by boat, so their prices are a little higher than you would find on the mainland. You can also find pizza by the slice, if you just want something quick. If you're on the Island, I'm sure you will be in there for something. read more

If you live on Mackinac year-round, you know Doud's. How could you not? As the only grocery store and market on the island operating after tourist season descends, the locals definitely make a point of stopping in. However, you're probably like me: staying on the island or visiting from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. Doud's needs to be a stop on your jaunt around town if you didn't cart food over on the ferry. Tourists overwhelm Doud's throughout the height of the summer looking for the same fare you are, picnic supplies and snack foods to carry you through that long looping route through the State Park on a bike. Don't underestimate your need for proper fuel or anyone else's knowledge about Doud's. They will be at the supermarket, same as you. The aisles contain plenty of non-perishable staples ranging from dry cereal and crackers to pop and cookies. Fresh bread, fruit, and vegetables can be picked up here. The deli is the real star of the show, especially when showing up early. Skip the cafes and eateries around Main Street and slap together your own sandwich for about the same price. Kids in particular can get a kick picking out a few options from the deli, which is always a welcome treat. They've been at this since 1884, one of the oldest grocers in the country, so the formula clearly works. Do be prepared to pay more, however, as Mackinac's lack of proximity to a Meijer or Target obviously impacts prices. Someone has to pay for the ferry/barge service bringing supplies over. read more

I do understand the pricing for items, but some seems to way higher. I know all the foods must travel to island via boat or plane and that adds to the costs. I finally found what could be a "normal" grocery store on Mackinac Island. It answers the burning question of "Where do people who live on the island do their everyday shopping?" They have all the common groceries you would find in a standard convenience store, including a well-stocked supply of alcohol. Some of their items are a tad pricier than what you would find on the mainland, but the markup is not unreasonable considering their supply and location. I wish I would've found this place before I shelled out $4 apiece for a bottle of beer at the nearby bar. They have a full aisle of cold beer and shelved liquor for regular prices. After finding this place, I decided to brownbag my beer for the rest of my evening on the island. I'm not sure how legal that was, but I saved a ton on alcohol. read more

Stopped in here a couple times during my Mackinac Island trip with my wife. This place is a pretty good supermarket and has everything any one would ever need. Overall, as a tourist staying nearby this is a good option to pick up something quick when on a strict budget and bypassing some of the pricier reataurant options further down Main Street. read more
