The lake becomes filled with fishing shacks, quads and snow machines but also the annual festivities of Winterfest on the Saturday of the Family Day Long weekend. All around town, businesses have Winterfest specials and the day is kicked off with the annual Polar Dip, where brave souls dive into the icy waters of Sylvan Lake for charity and then a game of hockey. The lake is busy with skaters on the prepared ice rink, sleigh rides, burgers and hot dogs. The local community centre holds and indoor farmer's market. The day is then finished with a firework show that is usually pretty good for a smaller town. From an adult perspective, it's one of those things you can take or leave, but with kids in tow, they have a blast taking in the festivities and in turn, the adults get a kick out of them enjoying themselves.

One of the funkiest live music venues/dive bars I've ever been to, The Vat is funky, eclectic and altogether charming and welcoming. No wonder it's a hit with diverse people ranging from college students to old regulars. I wish I could pick it up and take it with me, up north to Edmonton. The server was friendly, the beer (house draught) was ultra-cheap and cold, and even though there were only a couple of rub-a-dubs around on a Sunday afternoon at 2, it was a blast. Definitely drop by if you've never been. A great way to break up the long drive from Edmonton to Calgary, or vice versa.

The centre offers pretty much any class or program that you can think of. Best of all the facility is entirely family friendly: the pool complex has a waterpark for the kids and programs run for all ages. In the summer, there is plenty of outdoor field space as well. It certainly is a boon for the whole city to have a facility like this.

Parking is large and located around the building when driving in. There is a shared business next door Ctrl-V but entrance appears to be separate from the cinema entrance. The two tier seats are neat and next time I will take upper seats to see over the glass. For $90 a family pack will get the whole family out for an evening. The concessions are poorly planned and have insane lines. Kinda expensive rink food too.
