    New beaches.

I cannot believe it has taken me so long to write this review. While visiting a friend we took a drive to this beach. It is amazingly unique to any beach I have been to. The forest is right next to the beach and the trees are hanging off the cliff above. There was a huge tree that had falled off the cliff and it was covered in barnacles. The views are outstanding. I might move here. Just kidding, but it is an amazing place to visit. Plenty of parking and the walk down to the beach is equally beatiful. There was large green lawn with deer. You walk past some private residences on the way to the beach. I could live here. if I wanted to do. But nope, I am a California girl. I digress! Next time I visit, I will be sure to visit this beach again. You should too! Cheers and happy Yelping!

We have lived here for over 10 years and this was our first time stopping at this beach! We went one day randomly after the Steilacoom Farmers Market which is only 2-3 mins away. It was a beautiful sunny day and my kids has a blast. I like how you don't have to walk far to get to the sandy beach area. It gets really busy on a nice day but there is plenty of space to spread out. The water is cold but you get use to it. It's kid friendly, the eater isn't choppy. There isn't much shade so bring a canopy or umbrella especially on a hot day! Tip ~ You need cash to pay for parking. You have to cross a small strip of train tracks to get to the beachfront. They have showers to rinse off Playground is fun for the kids Restaurants and I've cream nearby Get there early if you want good parking on a hot day! They have benches and shelter picnic areas near the playground. The water is clean and clear

Sunnyside Beach Park is a great place to bring the kids, have a picnic and lounge in the beautiful sunshine. There is a lot of space at this park. For me, it's a place to launch my kayak. I really enjoyed kayaking from Sunnyside to Chambers Bay and back. It's always nice to get out and stretch at the half way point. It's a beautiful area. The only thing that's a little bit of a pain is having to go down the hill from parking and cross a railroad to get to the beach - it doesn't make it the easiest place to launch - but worth the trouble.

What a perfect little spot to bring the kids and let them play in the calm water. The beach isn't huge but there is enough room to lay a blanket out and gets some sun and watch the babes play. The beach seemed pretty clean. Right above the beach area is two volleyball nets, a pavilion with tables, bathrooms, and a decent size playground. The only downfall is that there is train tracks VERY close to the beach and volleyball nets. There is a train coming every 15 to 20 minutes and there is nothing that prevents you from going on to the tracks when the train is crossing. It is extremely important to keep an eye on the little ones who might want to venture closer for a better look. Parking is not free and will only set you back $5 for an entire day. I will be back again!

Sunnyside Beach Park is probably one of the best parks in Steilacoom and that doesn't say much because it's the only park I've been to in Steilacoom. You can get a really nice view of the water and can also see chambers bay from here which is pretty nice. The only downsides of this place is that there is pretty limited parking and cars can pay 5 dollars to park here the whole day which can be a pro and a con. This place is also right by the train tracks which gets really noisy every so often when a train passes by. Usually this place isn't that crowded but on July 4th, it was packed during the noon time. You could probably have a better experience at Chambers Bay which is a lot bigger and the view from Chambers Bay is also a lot nicer than the view from here

Absolutely beautiful beautiful very clean me and my family enjoyed it it's right by the water a little dangerous train tracks but just be careful and watch your kids

This is an awesome little park. There is an area for playing volleyball and some grassy areas for sports or for children to run around. There is a covered pavilion area with tables and benches for parties and get togethers. The bathrooms are clean and well-maintained. The best part of this park, though, is the beach. Sunnyside is a beautiful beach for walking. The views of the Sound are spectacular, especially on a sunny day. You can also catch a glimpse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the distance. When a train isn't passing by and blowing its horn, it's quiet and peaceful. The park is scattered with benches which offer peaceful moments of introspection. I would love to come here to sit and write and draw and stare out at the water.

This location is beautiful! It's a wonderful place to hang out during the summer because it's right on the water & there is beach access for those wanting to cool off. It has a volleyball net set up, a covered picnic area (as well as some uncovered tables) as well as a small playground for the kiddos.

    Beautiful scenery!

Water was colder than I would have liked. I guess I need to go back to Lake Samamish if I want to go in the water.

So many water activities going on left and right with people fishing, jetskiing, riding on their personal boat, etc. it was a good time all around. Do not think that you can drink here. Be sure to bring snacks and drinks, especially with the hot weather going right now in the month of June 2026. Pick up after yourself so we could continue to have this beauty, please! Watch out for the military police. Multiple sites to rest at, including summer cove where I was at with my Asian migration group, hehe! Most of the surrounding shore that makes up American Lake looks to be private and this park seems to be more of a boat launching point for the general public to use for utilizing the lake. The park itself is quite small and that also goes for the parking lot as well. The day I went was a warm day so the park was full as well as the designated lots. Filled lots for certain parks often times in neighborhoods aren't really that big of a deal because you can use curbside parking that is usually nearby but in this part of Lakewood there is no curbside parking at all and it looks like parking in front of someone's house doesn't seem like it's a good idea because one gets the idea you are parking in their yard and not on a curb. So what I did was park in an area that was designated for a school and carefully looked for any parking restrictions given the amount of time it would take for me to walk to the park, check it out for a bit then walk back. This proved to not be an issue parking here but the walk was a bit long. Fortunately the day that I picked to go to American Lake was a clear day and if you walk to the boat docks you can get a good view of Mount Rainier and the the lake itself is very pretty. But don't assume you can get a clear view of the mountain all of the time. Overcast is not unusual. There is also a decent looking beach here as far as lake beaches go but like everything the day I went it was fairly crowded. The boat ramp was in full use as well and a line of cars were waiting to unload as well. Definitely a very busy park the day I went despite it's size. Aside from the crowds this park isn't too bad and if you can enjoy the view of Mount Rainier and the water I'd definitely bump that aspect of the park up to four stars.

There are a few others I feel that are of this good of quality but notable exceptions would be the walking paths at Ruston Way, Cushman Trail (in Gig Harbor) and maybe a trail in Orting, WA which I have yet to go to. I am focusing on the surface of the trails because a lot of Tacoma trails have pretty significant bumps and upheavals in the path caused by roots, frost and time. And seeing them neglected is a bit sad and possible hazards. The views while walking the trail are breathtaking in which you can see the Olympic Mountains, neighboring islands and Puget Sound as well as different angles of the park in which you can get in great views of the concrete structures on one side of the park and the golf course. Definitely a trail I recommend taking if you are into scouting out bike and walking trails and don't mind going up tall hills and a giving up some time to do the loop. This trail is pretty popular as ts in the summer lots of people use it and I can easily understand why.
