We love Owen's Beach! It's a great park to spend the day with friends or family, or to get out and enjoy your alone day. There is a grass area and a long strip of rocky beach to sit near the waterfront. The restrooms are fairly clean. They offer daily kayak rentals. If you find your perfect spot on the beach you may see some wildlife, like various seabirds and seals. Overall, it's a clean and family friendly beach that feels safe. There is lots of parking but it does get filled up quickly on a nice sunny day. Go early to get a good parking spot! read more

What a great and fun beach. It's very clean and appealing to the eye. There is a bit of a drive to get to the beach but there is plenty of parking available. Although you may not be able to get anything close to the beach. There is a nice "boardwalk" to walk or bike along and offers a scenic view. The beach area is a decent size and can accommodate many families but be warned that it is rocky and pebbly. There was a private event happening in a building there. They also had several bathrooms. A cute little cafe and a place to rent kayaks. It was just a nice vibe. If you didn't want to sit on the beach area there were plenty of benches to just sit and enjoy the view as well. read more

Relaxing place to walk my Boston boy. There's a combination of paved walkways or a dirt trail to walk. A lot of spots to sit down and enjoy the wonderful views of Puget Sound. I went on a weekday and was able to miss any crowds. And there was a herd of seals playing in the water near the shore. Owen's Beach is a great place to go and connect with nature. read more

Owen Beach is a lovely PNW beach in Point Defiance. The beach is definitely rockier rather than sandy. Owen Beach offers great views, opportunities for wildlife sightings (like seals), amenities like bathrooms, kayak rental, pavilions/tables, and an excellent paved path right along the shore. LOVE Owen beach!! This is easily one of my favourite places to walk, mostly because of the chance to see a lot of awesome sea life and it connects to other areas so you can easily walk allll the way down to the Chinese reconciliation park if you are so inclined. There's a lot of parking right by the beach, or you can park up top and find yourself a staircase to gain access. The trail is paved and flat so it's great for people with disabilities. The park has been recently renovated and has a new playground (which is pretty lame and best suited towards littles), pavilion, kayak rentals, and a concession stand. There's also a large panic shelter which is great for any events! read more

Our Tacoma friends took us to check out Owen Beach. Parking is not a problem because there are so many parking stalls. On the right side when walking towards the beach, there is a kayak rental shop. The restrooms were on the left. Next to the restrooms, there is a Pavilion available to rent for small parties up to 66 people. There was also a little playground for kids. If you keep walking down to the left side of the beach, there's a picnic area. We saw people walking to the forest so we believe that there is a hiking trail. The water looked too cold to swim in, but there were some people swimming and a few kayaking. Also, it was interesting to see that it was a pebble beach because I'm used to sandy beaches. We even saw a seal swimming in the water which was super cool! We didn't do any swimming, kayaking, or hiking, but we enjoyed taking a stroll around the beach and admired the scenery. We could even see half of Mount Rainier (if you look to the right side of the beach). It was so beautiful and relaxing. read more

Since the reno the space looks cleaner and the facilities are better maintained. Everyone hates public park bathrooms but the ones here are much nicer. They added a wash off area so you can get rid of all the sand and the slide/rubber floor is a great addition for the kids! Great spot for being lazy or adventurous with a view of Vashon and the sound. read more

Supposedly, I run now? Yep, apparently I like to go on jogs now, thanks to this place. Not only does it have a wide stretch of sand and an entire lake for you to explore, it has a running/walking/jogging path hugging its shoreline. Definitely makes me feel at home, because you know an island girl needs to see/experience an expanse of water. Beach bathrooms are decently clean too. I went on a weekday morning, and while the bathrooms were locked, a park ranger was nice enough to get one open for me. Was debating getting an inflatable paddle board so I can enjoy this beach even more. But I don't have a wetsuit and actually wanna prioritize my money to be allocated elsewhere, because summer *is* ending in a bit. It was cold and rainy today, but we still had an absolute blast visiting Owen Beach near Point Defiance. We went with the hope of seeing some seals and we got lucky! The seals delivered! The tide was inso there wasn't much beach to work with but we were able to hike perhaps 1,000 feet along the coast, over fallen trees, around little pools of krill, and through beautiful stony patches. The scenery is stunning. The moss covered trees are the best! read more

Some friends and I were looking for something dog friendly and fun to do while I was being a good Auntie and watching my sister's son, Magnus the Great, an adorable Siberian Husky. My friends who do not have any hooman or furry children of their own suggested Owen Beach as place they frequently go just to play with other people's cute doggies. I was pleased that it isn't very far from Tacoma and is located in Point Defiance Park. It was fairly easy to find parking in their large lot. The beach has a beautiful view and crystal clear water. It's a nice place to enjoy with the family with several spots of grassy areas for relaxing, lots of beach to walk, and of course options for water activities. We enjoyed our beach time and were happy for the benches in the area. The beach is a bit rocky and not very comfortable to walk around barefoot on, but other than that its a great spot. read more

This beach is beautiful and great for summer outdoor BBQing. The beach itself is not super sandy like Golden Gardens, but little rock. I prefer sandier beaches. It has a nice long coast for you to walk with your dogs and with people. If you look closely at the waters, sometimes you might see a seal! Generally, I don't spend a lot of time in Tacoma. I was really excited to have a full day to leisurely explore. We were driving by and decided to stop for a break and it was exactly what we needed. There was plenty of parking when I was there but I can see how it would be limited during the summer months. Views of the water and beautiful pacific northwest are always welcome! Watching ferries float by, birds singing, and people enjoying being close to nature is where it's at. There is a path ideal for walking or wheeled transport (bike, skates, skateboards, etc.). There's plenty of seating whether it's a log, picnic tables, or benches. Exploring the beach is fun for all ages. I enjoyed people watching. Good weather brings life to the area...so many smiles and people enjoying the day in different ways was great to see! read more

Instead of heading to the zoo I decided to see what the rest of the Point Defiance park area entailed. I will say that Owen Beach is super grand and there is so much parking. The parking lot is on a hill and the parking goes all the way up but it's still a short walk to the actual beach and really close to the bathroom services. As I walked through the parking lot though, I did notice quite a few used condoms on the ground, soooooooooo....ya. Aside from the abundance of contraceptive devices, I did feel moderately safe. The Tacoma police rode by on a regular too. I'm not sure if the area has high crime or they were just in the course if normal patrol. The beach isn't the only thing that is offered. You can rent kayaks and there are plenty of safe trails, long and short. Bring a friend or your dog and it's a perfect walk or place to picnic. It was a nice place to relax and refresh my mind as well as get some exercise. read more

Owen Beach! Another great point of interest in Point Defiance! I love bringing the dogs down here for a nice stroll. Yes, often times it is very busy and since my dogs can get anxious I usually hold them until we are a considerable distance away from the parking lot. It's especially refreshing coming down here during the summer time as it is always so much more cooler and rejuvenating after wilting for a considerable time in town. lol If you come here during the weekend or early enough in the day you rent kayaks and go strolling around on the Sound. There is also a snack stand as well. Numerous times I have come across aquatic life here even when there are a lot of people they don't seem to shy away from that. Several times I have seem harbor seals hang out here. In a way I think they actually like being around people (at a comfortable distance of course) because it seems like they are showing off on occasion. I have seen otters nearby as well. My most recent visit to the beach was seeing clams squirt water out of the sand. And of course there is the wildlife here that is never too far from the beach and seems to be a staple to Point Defiance... the deer and the raccoons. They are always fun to observe. The view at Owen Beach is fantastic and panoramic. On a clear day you can sometimes see Mount Rainier which is always stunning as well as Vashon Island and the ferry that goes back and forth. You can on see the big cargo ships sitting in the sound as well. If one is a native to Tacoma perhaps these ships aren't much of a novelty but since I come from Middle America they still are a novelty to me. You can stroll for a considerable direction along the beach. If you go towards the direction where Gig Harbor is the paved sidewalk eventually runs out but you have a great beach to walk along for quite some time. In the other direction the side walk remains and takes you to a marina. Either direction you go you are in for a very scenic and enjoyable walk. Owen Beach will always remain one of my favorite spots in Point Defiance. read more

The beach has a beautiful view but so hard to walk because of all the rocks. It was exciting for the kids to see baby crabs, starfish, and other sea animals in the water!! There were a lot of families on the beach but not over crowed. I was worried that parking was going to be limited but we were able to find parking easily. Also what's nice is that they have a concession stand that sells drinks and snacks. We didn't buy anything from there but they also offered kayak rentals, $27 for two people for one hour. If you are looking for a Sandy Beach, this is not the beach for you, but it is clean and nice and have trails! Also right by tac zoo!!! read more

Love love love this beach. You can just come down to sit and stare at the water or walk to Anthony's and all the way to Point Ruston now. We've launched our kayak and gone around to look at the Narrows bridges. You can rent kayaks and paddle boards too. There's plenty of parking but in the summertime it gets crowded and you will get towed if you're not in a marked spot. read more

This beach has beautiful setting, it has amazing views and plenty of beach space to relax. It's a family friendly environment. It was not crowded at all. I'm vacationing from AZ, I spent my last two days all over Seattle, got tired. I wanted to explore the outdoors/wilderness, we looked up tons of places near Seattle. We couldn't choose so many good places, I really wanted to see the beach so I decided Owen Beach, I'm glad it was amazing! Tons of amazing views from the forest to the ocean. We stayed there almost 4-5 hours just walking the shore, taking tons of pictures and videos! I wish I brought my dog Charlie, she definitely would have loved it! The weather was very chilly please wear a jacket or sweater! All in all I would definitely recommend this place and will be coming back read more

This is probably the smaller Tacoma version of Discovery Park where there's logs on the sand with a water background so you can take profile photos. Owen Beach is tucked in way in the back along Point Defiance, you might question if a serial killer is going to pop out driving through all these forest looking roads, but trust the signs and come with a charged phone so your gps doesn't die on you. There's a couple tables to have picnics here. Not sure if this is dog friendly or not, but it's pretty low key so I'd still bring my dog. Brought my two kids and as I pulled in to point defiance was the first sign I saw saying CLOSED FOR RENOVATION UNTIL SUMMER 2022. But it's beautiful when it's open. Per Tacoma parks website, "Exciting changes are coming to Owen Beach! Owen Beach updates are designed to improve traffic flow, parking, and recreation spaces while honoring the park's character. Construction timeline: February 22, 2021 - mid-summer 2022 Promenade access during construction: The promenade remains open for pedestrians with access available only from the end near the boathouse. The rest of Owen Beach, including its entry and exit roads, stairs, parking, beaches and the access point at the north end of the promenade will be closed to the public during construction." read more

Owen Beach has a beautiful view of the water and the ferry dock taking people to/from Vashon. Sandy, natural beach with a lot of driftwood but heavily combed over. Saw some trails that lead into the rest of Pt. Defiance but it was freezing so my visit was short lived. There are public restrooms. A huge parking lot that probably fills up in the warm months, a dozen people were there and a couple dogs since is was 33F. read more

The area is right by a ferry boarding place - but the beach is awesome. Rocks, and sand, and the smell of a harbor. I had no idea this area was so beautiful. One of the many reasons to visit Point Defiance Park, Owen Beach is an excellent place to 'get away from it all' without leaving the city. Of course, when the weather is nice you'll be sharing the splendor with hundreds of other people. There's an easy solution to that, however: either visit when the weather ISN'T great or else just keep walking down the beach until the crowds thin and you're surrounded by trees, seawater, and wildlife. Beauty! Facilities at the main beach area include picnic tables, a reservable picnic shelter, restrooms, seasonal kayak rentals, and a (huge) parking lot. read more

Love this beach! First time here. I got there around 2pm and the parking lot was pretty full. I got lucky and got a spot close to the boardwalk. I walked down the boardwalk with my dog enjoying the gorgeous view of the Puget Sound. I love the fact that this is the only place that will allow dogs on the actual beach.
