The care they provide the children in unmatched. I travel over a bridge each day to drop my little ones because I haven't found other places with equitable services. The communication is great. We use a Pro Care App and the teachers check in throughout the day. My 6 y.o. loves the summer camp and looks forward to going each day. 4 of the 5 days the children are out of the building, and they go swimming each week! The extra meal service is helpful so I don't have to worry about prep. The program provides trip shirts, so aside from her shorts I don't have to worry about wardrobe headaches. My daughter loved making new friends in camp. Last year we attempted another camp for a few weeks that was closer to home and quickly switched back because she hated it. For my youngest who is now 2, he too participated in the summer program. What I liked about his program is they have an awesome backyard and have outside water time daily (weather permitting). They also get to have inside gym time to keep their bodies active and moving. His bookbag was always full of activities he completed in school and my pro care communication app, always up to date showing me the fun activities he was engaging in. The best part for me, since I am always running is I could communicate with the staff when I was in transit so they could being to prep him for departure at the end of the day. As far as the cost, it's worth it and comparable to other programs that have infants and toddlers. The program we attempted in 2023 with my middle child was a bit more expensive, and just didn't work out for us. We will be back next year!

A genuinely positive culture is shared among their administrators (both Julia and Maria are simply amazing) and teachers (all of whom our son adored). Our son has many allergies, and we always felt 100% secure in knowing that his safety was their number one priority. Our children have been to numerous daycare centers over the years, but none stack up to Mushroom House. When our youngest turns two (the minimum age to enroll there), we have zero doubts about where to take him.

As for the curriculum, my baby learns new numbers and alphabet every week and brings home wonderful art that she did in class. Pros: Small Class size - Student/Teacher Ratio is high. Four teachers to about 22 kids per class. Although, I am not clear on what licenses/permits each have. After School programs and camps - I have heard good things about them and the fact that they have them is a plus for many families. Large Classrooms - large classrooms with lots of light, many books, toys, and learning/ activity centers. Great Location - Located in Forest Hills Gardens. The school also has ample outdoor play space. Excellent Enrichment - The *PA WAS fantastic at fundraising, helping to support substantial enrichment opportunities (e.g., visiting nutritionist, visiting Noguchi Museum staff, winter/end of the year show, yearbook, etc.). Great Community - My experiences with the families has been extremely positive. The Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, and neighboring communities are replete with a diverse group of pretty friendly families who are very involved in their children's education. Cons: Non-progressive curriculum - If you are looking for a "progressive" curriculum that is "positive discipline" focused, then, in my opinion, you will not find much of that here. It is a problematic issue if they tout themselves as "progressive" school, which they did at the open house we attended. The school is play-based, in part, but with a lot of "structure" and "discipline" weaved in. There was a lot of prescribed art (not process based) and, overall, it's not child-centered enough. They like to say that they "borrow a little from here and a little from there" but, at its heart, it remains traditional. Punitive discipline- As in old traditional schools, they make the nursery kids line up and wait for their teachers before having them walk quietly into their respective classrooms. Kids are also separated based on gender, depending on the activity. Nursery school kids who were "disruptive" or "crying too much" or "emotionally distraught" were regularly taken out of the classroom, so as not to disturb the "learning" of the other kids. If you want to continue to tout yourself as progressive, then take a page out the DOE's mandate. Its two very helpful Early Childhood Learning Benchmarks effectively state that the learning in a nursery-school and pre-school should solely be focused on normalizing and validating kids' feelings and emotions, setting gentle limits to help kids develop a positive sense of self so that they can learn to manage their behavior positively when they are developmentally ready to. To enact a one-size-fits-all punitive approach has long been established as useless and harmful. Once we realized that our child was being regularly punished, we were only then told about their punitive behavioral management approach, which involved giving the nursery kids a "choice" to either comply or to sit alone in either a red or blue chair (deceptively called "cozy corner"). This "choice" would be given to the kids when they were unable to "get a hold of themselves," were disruptive by talking or calling out during say circle time or when they otherwise needed to "calm down." Such unreasonable expectations virtually guarantee, if not sets them up for, failure. What 3 year old do you know that can sit still or stay quiet on command? These approaches single the kid(s) out in front of all of their peers. It's a dunce cap 2.0. Such approaches can inadvertently teach kids nothing but shame and that they are "bad." It's false choice which essentially amounts to a "time out," is counter to progressive education, and it undermines nursery school kids' nascent sense of self-esteem. Leadership issues - Leadership needs to be reconsidered, and the school must give families a voice. *Dismantled PA: Unbeknownst to many, at the end of the year in which my child attended, the school just dismantled the PA. By most accounts I got wind of, parents were shocked and had zero say in that decision. Confusing Admissions Process - In my experience, admission requirments were poorly and inconsistently communicated. They do not have the same age cut-offs the DOE. Plus, you must submit a waitlist card for each program the year before to be on the waitlist to get in. Cost: I think it's expensive!

Milk is promised for lunch but confirmed by multiple staff members it is often SPOILED and snacks are EXPIRED. We caught Mya lying regarding many issues and the one we cant overlook is having an illegitimate UPK class. She lied to parents about having a DOE approved UPK class when DOE confirmed she did not have one. Now parents are stuck mid year with a class mixed with 3 and 4 year olds and a teacher who is not certified. Do NOT be tricked! She will promise things she wont deliver!!

They engage the children and my son just glows at the sight of them! I was so sad to see Ms. Leah leave- she was an incredible talent who was able to make each and every baby smile- but the other instructors are wonderful and the classes are interesting and fun. My son (16 months) is in Music II, which encourages toddlers to play with real instruments, and provides them exposure to written music, as well as experimentation with different rhythms and volumes. It is delightful, and there is obvious care into what is being taught (there is a method behind the lessons). I also love that there is a theme each week (ex: African music, Elvis Presley, Queen, Samba, Broadway Tunes, etc) as this gets me shaking my bum as well! The one drawback is the scarcity of open gym time. It would be fine if the gym were only open to members, but since it is open to the public (a person can pay a one-time fee to attend the open gym) it gets PACKED- even on weekdays! I mean, toddlers running into each other, parents tripping over each other packed. And....because there are some people who come here and there and have no real loyalty to the business, they can be quite rude and obnoxious during open gym. For instance, one mother sat on the floor with her legs spread out, texting, not watching her child, consequently making children and parents have to climb over her to get to the play station she was blocking. Ugh! This type of thing is not uncommon, but only during open gym (baby gym is much more peaceful). I would definitely suggest that there be 1 or 2 open gym sessions per week that are JUST for gymboree members, so that we can get our $102/month's worth. Other than that, this place is awesome, and provides great educational entertainment to my little guy.

As a parent, I make decisions about my child's schedule -- not a business owner. If there were operational limitations, that could have been communicated professionally. Instead, the reasoning was judgmental and paternalistic. Families seeking therapy services deserve respect, flexibility, and professional boundaries. Unfortunately, this interaction showed a concerning lack of all three. We chose to take our business elsewhere.
