Although I am a traditionalist, preferring my choc brownies with nuts usually, this one was pretty bloody good. It was fresh (always a good start!), crunchy on the outside and gooey soft-fudge-like in the middle. It was a pretty decent size too; I have a sweet toot but still had to stop half way and give myself a break before continuing! Boldly displayed on the window it is written that this bakery has won awards (quite a few years back), for 'European bread', croissants and most recently for their quiche.

But these kind of guys know the best places to go for a alcohol soaking feed, so I fearlessly jumped on. That's a lie, I was scared and hung on to him like we were going on a hot date. When we got to top well I was impressed. quite a large selection, nice looking pies, friendly employees. The food I got lived up to both the praise heaped on it by my friend and the initial impression it made on me, with the pie I got full of meat and cheese, instead of a terrible lumpy gravy. Unfortunately I dropped my pizza bread right in the dirt so never got a chance to sample it, but it looked pretty good.

We love fresh bread rolls for lunches and Top Well Bakery have a good range, of course there is always a French stick thrown into the order. Meat pies are second on the list for the ravenous teenagers after school and never are they disappointed here. Their pizza bread isn't something we like to buy because, as I mentioned there is the opposition across they way, well they have the best pizza bread. However this one redeems itself on the sweet side as their cakes and pastries are second to none, yummy. Saturday morning when we are out and about after sports or dancing, a trip to the bread shop completes our lunch.

We required a hangover pie and some healthy eats one day so I really enjoyed my chicken sandwich on yum bread, with generous portions of lettuce, chicken etc. I did not enjoy my pizza stick, finding it dry and just generally lacking in yummy taste. The pie however was a hit, curing the boyfriends hangover, and helping him get on with the day. Pretty well priced for a bakery these days with sandwiches costing a nice $3.20 odd. I would not go out of my way to visit this bakery, but I will happily stop in when passing by.

So was the free muffin with the coffee! They have a good range of pastries like sausage rolls, pies, quiches and cold sandwiches and a lot of people come here for breakfast and lunch because it's the only real bakery close to a lot of businesses in the new area. I was pretty happy with the service and prices, but it's by no means 5 star. It will fill you up happily though.

Everyone in the Mt Eden area knows how good this place is and I think that's why it gets so busy over lunch time. It's also very popular around 3pm when all the schools in the area finish. I always make a beeline for their finger buns every time I visit Golden Bakery. Soft yeast buns smothered with a thick coating of a pink or white icing sugar glaze and topped off with dessicated coconut, it sure does its job of satisfying my sweet tooth. Their cream donuts are good too but then again, when are cream donuts ever not good? The contents in the pie warmer cabinet contain your classic sausage rolls, mini savouries, and mince pies. At less than $4 for each item, it's well priced (though I've never had the chance to sample their pie range because I always get distracted by the finger buns). A loaf of freshly baked sliced white or wholemeal bread will set you back a mere $2, but they're nothing to scream home about, so stick with your supermarket varieties, I say. The usual hot drinks, and fish and chips (say what) are also served here. An alternative to the $5 meal deals offered by the fast food chains, Golden Bakery offers a combo of a sandwich, donut and Coke for $5. The $4.80 combo gets you a large coffee and a donut or danish. Cheap, on-the-go meal fixes for when you've got a real hankering for bakery treats. Golden Bakery is a little awkwardly placed, adjacent to a liquor store and a scungy river, and with an internet cafe on the level above, but on the plus side, there's plenty of parking. Family-owned and operated, you'd be hard pressed to find anything really unique about Golden Bakery but if you do happen to stop by, I leave you with two words, and two words only: finger buns.

I picked up a cream-filled one on a whim, just cause I felt like something sweet... almost had to pull over to the side of the road to keep from hyperventilating when I took a bite. Wow! These are proper 'European' style pastries! Totally took me by surprise, as they look so unassuming. The other stuff there is pretty average. I got a duo of quiches, which were okay; and also a sandwich for the following day's lunch, which was dry. But the donuts cured all of that. And the lady there is so nice!
