I was looking for some quality (no phone) time with my teenage son so I booked us a local horseback ride! Quite out of the way from south of the Intercoastal waterway but well worth the trip. Steve and Kathleen are lovely people. We are locals so we booked a two hour ride in early February. The weather was perfect and the horses were great. I rode Jimbo and my son rode Elvis. Elvis was perfect for beginner riders. Very gentle and easy going. Jimbo was cute and had a touch of a teen ager attitude which was fine with me. The two hour ride through the local forest and wetlands protected Forrest. The vista were breathtaking white sand and local flatland. Their website makes great recommendations for water, hats etc. very accommodating and all around pleasant experience. P.S. We had an amazing experience at Sunshine Riding Trails! Our guide Annabelle made sure to pick horses that matched our riding abilities perfectly. My wife's a novice rider & it's been years since I was back in the saddle, but the horses were calm & gentle, which made us feel completely at ease. Annabelle was incredibly friendly & knowledgeable, sharing stories about the local area, pointing out different things about the nature preserve while sharing wildlife updates along the way. The scenery was woodlands, hills, with road crossings, & beautiful views. We never felt rushed & even got some fantastic photos taken by Annabelle herself. The horses had their own personalities, loved treats & were clearly happy & well-cared for. A HUGE shout-out to the star attraction Max, the black lab who was our scout for the entire two hour ride. This whole experience was the highlight of my first day of scheduled vacation. We highly recommend this stable to anyone looking for a memorable, safe, & fun excursion in nature. Great experience, great instructions, and great ride. It was my son's first time riding and he loved it even though he was hesitant at first. The trail weaves in and out of pine forest leading down to a spring fed lake. The horses were friendly and well behaved. Tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and led us on a wonderful ride. Was worried it might get too hot. The temperature was around 85 degrees but a little overcast and never once got hot on the ride. Would definitely recommend for any of those Red Flag days at the beach. About a 30 minute drive from Hwy 79. read more

Took the 2 hour guided Trail ride Pros: - Lots of trails on state land. - Trail guide was friendly, informative, but not overly talkative. - price was reasonable given length of time on ride. - Trail guide was attentive to the one non rider in The group ensuring he was ok to go faster etc. - Horses we're ready when we came up. She had Done her due diligence and read the info I had given about each rider. Especially a rider that nerve Issues in her leg/foot. She was able to assist with mounting and dismountingp to ensure this rider was safe. - Horses all wore hackamores. Gentler than a bit With someone who doesn't normally ride yanking On a horses mouth. - There we're plenty of "carrot stops" where we would give our horses carrots that we were supplied with. - Being Florida and HOT, can't think of a better break spot than the freshwater lake that you are allowed to wade the horses into. Cons: - Although the horses coats were shiny and the horses looked to be well fed. The only thing I noticed were the cracks in my mares hooves. Ouch. read more

We had a wonderful experience doing the 2 hour guided trail ride. The guide was very welcoming and friendly. You can tell that they love the horses. They are well cared for. I love how they bring treats for the horses along the way and stop for "treat breaks" along the way. The 2 hour ride was perfect. We stopped at some very beautiful spots. We rode through wooded areas and by several lakes. I rode Thunder and she was beautiful. She would reach around and nuzzle my leg begging me for the treats. Of course I gave in!! I haven't been horseback riding in YEARS (like 25) and I was really nervous about getting back on a horse. My best friend set up an excursion for horseback riding for a two hour trip while on a girls weekend in PCB. The price was incredible $50 for two hours, and we were all pretty eager and excited. What I liked most about Sunshine Riding Trails was that you could tell that not only were the horses well taken care of, but Kathy (owner/guide) loves them all and sees them as her pets. They're not just money-makers that she's using to bring in some income. She truly loves them, cares about them, and can tell you about their personalities. She was able to match each of us and our comfort levels with a horse that would be a good fit. We had an amazing time on our horses and we each got a pack for our saddles. Inside the pack were some carrots to feed to our horses, a bottle of cold water, and a granola bar. Not only did Kathy care about her horses, but she was very helpful and wanting to make sure that we all had a wonderful experience on her horses. I have never had an experience like I had at SRT and I HIGHLY recommend them to anyone traveling to Panama City Beach for a vacation!! This was an outstanding experience. Do not judge this place based on what you see when you pull up because you will soon learn that this group of family, friends, and young volunteers are fun, kind, friendly, and caring people that make you feel like you're family. I've only ridden a horse one other time before this but I felt like a pro! The trails are beautiful. We got to take the horses into the water and even got to ride in the dark!! We were late to our 5 o'clock appointment and rather than cutting our ride short we still got to go the full three hours and experience riding in the late afternoon, during sunset and dusk, and in pitch black night with nothing but the horses to guide you. We live about two hours from here but will definitely be making the drive back before the summer ends. read more

I never went horseback riding before coming to the sunshine trails but now I'm trying to figure out why I haven't done it sooner! I went for my birthday today and our tour guide "Grandpa" David did an amazing job teaching us how to ride my horses . The trail we rode on was beautiful and he manged to answered all of our questions as well as educate us on the land the whole time. He made us feel absolutely comfortable and welcomed. I don't know how this place doesn't have any negative reviews, so I guess I'll be the first. We called 2 days in advance for a 3 person 2 hour trail ride at 3:00. When we got there 20 minutes early no horses were ready and they weren't ready until 4:20. The ride ended up only being an hour and half long. While on the ride we had short sections where we would trot, that was fine by all members. After about 30 minutes into the ride on the short trot my saddle came undone and I fell off. The guide couldn't care less. All she said was I must have leaned too far one way. I have been on 25-30 different trail rides at numerous locations so I know what to do and that wasn't the case. Also she knew in advance that this type of horse wasn't suitable for trotting because it will be very bouncy unlike the other members horses, so why did she even offer that option? Another thing is the place is basically someone's house with horses and doesn't seem like a real business or a real horse stable. It was very confusing as we pulled up where to park or what to do until the guide came out of the house (Should have been getting the horses ready knowing we were coming at that time). I defiantly shouldn't have been charged for my ride and the others should have got a discount for waiting that long for them to be ready and for shorting the ride 30 minutes. 2 people paid with cash and one paid with a card and she then said he would have to pay an extra $10 for processing. However we all just paid because we didn't want to cause a scene. Highly recommend to anyone not to go to this place and find another location for a trail ride! read more

Sunshine Riding Trails is absolutely amazing. This was my first time here, but I've been on a few trail rides before. However, this was by far the best one I've ever been on yet! Cathy is so outgoing and friendly, from the moment I met her you could tell how much she loved and cared for the horses, which doesn't happen everywhere. It was my friends first time riding in over 20 years and Cathy made her feel less anxious going into it and by the end of the ride she was confident, happy, & hooked. Friendly horses, friendly staff, best riding experience ever.

I decided to do the over nighter ride and camp for my daughter's 13th birthday. We could not have been happier with the entire adventure. First, we groomed our own horses which I thought was a great way to bond with our horses. We then rode some awesome trails followed by a swim in a beautiful cold water spring. We got back on the trail for an incredible sunset ride until almost 9pm. We arrived at camp where Dave had an awesome steak dinner waiting for us on the grill. We ended the night with smores by the camp fire and some good conversation and laughs. In the morning we had hot coffee and biscuits and gravy for breakfast. We hopped back on the trail and had another incredible ride and a much needed dip in Williford Springs which was gorgeous. Kathy was so accommodating through the entire process. She completely left it up to us in regards to how much we wanted to ride. My daughter just couldn't get enough. As far as Kathy, David, and Dawn you would be hard pressed to find better people. Kathy has such a passion for the horses and what she does. She was such a joy to be around the entire trip. David was a great guy and a heck of a cook and Dawn brings a great sense of humor and we had some good laughs. These folks truly love what they do and it shows. I would highly recommend Sunshine riding trails to all. I know we will be back again! read more

What an awesome find! This is where you want to ride if you're looking for a family atmosphere with great people and prices. Yes, it's a little bit of a drive if you're coming from the Destin/Niceville area, but then again, you're also escaping the tourists. Whatever riding package (ex. 1hr, 2hr, or overnight camping) you choose, the friendly staff make sure you're completely comfortable with your horse before you leave for the trail. Once on the trail, you'll have a trail boss in the lead, with another expert at the end. They both make sure you're safe and riding correctly the whole way. My wife and I had a great time and our 7 year old boy had a blast. Enjoy a nice ride with these guys and don't forget to tip if you think they did a good job. read more

It was a good activity for the money, but I would almost pay a little extra for a more professional atmospere.
