Two days before the event, my father in law unfortunately passed away and we understandably wanted to cancel the hotel. Via phone the contact was very difficult - they had to start the computer first as they told us and then they did not find the reservation apparently via the booking.com reservation number. Via booking.com message the contact worked finally with 12 hours delay an a lot of troubles A cancelation finally was not possible even for the such a case. I am asking myself what reason this hotels needs, if not for an obviously unexpected and unplannable death in closest family.

Used to be Diamond with Hilton, who graded my wife and me down as they do not credit me for group bookings. Also, reception says no status upgrades for HHonors members - as they are Hampton Inn, part of the Hilton group but with no obligation to honor the status. Fair enough. We canceled all further stays at the Hampton Inn on this tour. The hotel is OK, very clean, with great beds, and mediocre breakfast - basically what you would expect from a Hampton Inn. So if you are looking for a budget stay in the area, it's an OK place to stay, hence the 3 stars.

If you get a room on one of the top floors you'll get a grand view over the city and the rolling Schwarzwald hills - and the views will be quite mesmerizing from morning to night. My room was a queen sized one, nice and clean with what you could expect from a standard room. The obvious minus would be that the floor is carpeted with one of those old-fashioned carpets that are both yucky, non-allergy or environmental friendly. The bed and pillows are a bit soft plus there's something a bit mouldy smelly in the shower, the ventilation needs looking at. Also I miss sustainability efforts like the possibility to source separation your litter, a reminder that you needn't change your towels every day etc. Friendly staff, free wifi (although it's quite slow if you chose the free option) and the public transport ticket is included for all guests, which is great! Never tried the breakfast, not sure how well they could accomodate vegan options, I generally find hotel breakfasts boring and I love having breakfasts at cafes. So I'd sat opt out of the breakfast when you book your room and have a great breakfast at a nearby cafe instead (for example Huber or Café POW). With both pros and cons my overall rating will land at a strong 3.

It s a typical and traditional German Black Forest style and design (Schwarzwald in German, it s the mountain. A lots of wood, old furniture from the area, but nicely arranged, it s not heavy. It a all in one, restaurant & bar, hotel and spa (see the pictures). The spa is brand new with a fitness room, sauna, swimming pool, jacuzzi, in spa bar... The food was very good, fine and tasty, like the fois gras soup with chanterelle mushroom and pork meat. The service was nice we were very well looked after. There is a nice ambiance around the bar. A nice taking care, fresh air weekend ? Go there.

And the hotel provides guest passes to the train so for example you can hike 10km to Schluchsee from Aha (literally) and hop the train back - or hop the lake boat back. Or vice versa! Our only complaint was we had to change rooms to the back non-lake-view side since the busy main road in front (not pictured in any of the brochures) is very busy and loud with German motorcyclists! Overall friendly very informal atmosphere and good food and outrageously good breakfast buffet that will make your day. The 4-course dinner is expensive and too much food- the servers discouraged us from doing a la carte.

And because of the walls are stone, they radiate the heat back into the room all night long, so even with the windows open, it never cooled down. That's right, no fan in a room, because the owner/manager was too cheap to buy enough fans for all his guests, so only the early guests got fans. Seriously? At $200 USD per night, you'd think the clown could spring for enough fans for all his guests. But that's the issue when the manager is also the owner - he's more interested in his profits/income than he is in the comfort and the safety of his guests. When we went down in the morning to complain about the unsafe conditions, he couldn't have cared less; no concern, no apology, no responsibility - he just wanted to be paid and for us to go away. Look - if you don't believe me, do a search for other similar reviews. This place get's lots of good reviews, because it's a cute hotel in a good location, with a mostly friendly and helpful staff. Just avoid it in the hot summer months, which are getting hotter and hotter. Unless, of course, you like sleeping in an oven.

The room was very clean and bright, and the door was extra thick which might be a noise reduction measure. The hotel breakfast is a delight, with a wide range of heart-healthy options, plus more traditionally satisfying bacon-and-eggs-type choices. The breakfast layout is impeccable. Their breakfast is just a very pleasant experience; first class. It seems a lot of German speakers stay here. We took that to be an indicator of quality. Wenn man selbst Deutsch kann, ists natürlich zum Vorteil, aber die Belegschaft spricht gern Englisch. There's very little shelving, & not a lot of space, in the (immaculate) bathroom, nor in the shower...where are you supposed to put your stuff? This is a complaint I have about hotels all over Europe. It's a small price to pay for this otherwise great place. And it's only a hop-skip-jump to the highlights of the very charming town of Freiburg-Breisgau.
