I stumbled upon Absolutely Outer Banks a handful of years ago and I was impressed with the selection of locally made arts and crafts. Ever since, this is my go to spot for legitimate and tasteful Outer Banks souvenirs. In addition to locally made items they also have some vintage items and even some new items for sale. One item that this store specializes in is really cool resin windows that are unique and exude happiness. Absolutely Outer Banks has artwork in all mediums and in all price points. They have jewelry, wood signs, candles, prints, glass work, textiles, metal work, etc.  On my most recent visit I enjoyed looking at a vintage pin ball machine and eyeing up the beautiful array of Fiestaware. There is plenty of opportunity for ooohhhing and ahhhing.  The owner is super friendly so that adds to the overall great experience. The exterior of the building is nicely maintained and upon walking in the store I was totally mesmerized at all of the stuff to look at. The prices are mostly fair, and you can go high or low, depending on your situation. And yes, everyone hates that hermit crabs are kept in filthy tanks for clueless tourists to buy - many of which are no longer even alive. It's cruel and grotesque in this day and age. So here's hoping the evil overlords will see the numerous complaints and stop torturing defenceless hermit crabs.

At least a hundred hermit crabs in one small cage with no substrate, something they need to properly live. Overcrowded so badly they couldn't even move with the smallest and dirtiest water bowl. For those who don't know, the sale of hermit crabs is incredibly inhumane to begin with but these conditions were heartbreaking. These animals are meant to live 30 years in the wild, but they will die within weeks or months in these conditions. Do not support this business or the sale of hermit crabs, they are not as easy to take care of as these stores want you to think. If the treatment of the crabs wasn't enough to turn you off of this store, then at least listen that the merchandise was crappy and the store dirty.

Went to counter with 4 shirts plus other items, paid & realized as walking away from counter that a shirt wasn't removed for sale. Cashier got manager, Julija (I assume... since that's the name on my refund receipt), she tells me there's a sign that has a price on it... we walk together to the shirts & there is a sign w/ the price but NO WHERE on the sign/shelves does it say they are not included in the sale. I tell her I want to return 2 shirts then, she tells me store credit. I literally, took 2 steps from counter & that i'm not accepting store credit. She reluctantly gave me a refund & mumbles "next time you should read the signs"... I tell her "next time your signs need to be clear". Never again, will I spend money at a Sunsations! If manager isn't Julija... it's whatever manager was working June 25th. Such a jerk!

I like the fun collection of flags and banners on the exterior. On the inside, I appreciate how well everything is organized and displayed. They have USA flags, state flags, college flags, sports flags, etc. They also have lots of yard flags, banners, flag accessories and such. They also have samples of custom flags so it is nice to know that customization is possible. Regarding the garden/yard flags, they had some really nice quality ones for what I thought was a very reasonable price. I personally liked the mermaid flag and Cape Hatteras lighthouse flag. Since Islander Flags is located right next to the bridge, I wish I had known about it earlier in the week when I was driving past it on check in day. I worked retail for a long time and was always taught to greet customers but that seems to be a thing of the past. There wasn't any acknowledgement of our presence as we looked around for about 15 minutes and that seems to be a common experience in the retail world these days.

When I looked on Google I was mistaken by the car show that they had last week thinking there was gonna be cool cars to look at. They have metal signs, t shirts and all sorts of cool stuff though. The clocks they had were amazing. And the other half of the shop has a bunch of super cute stuff that cater to the beachy theme/gift shop.

The store itself is REALLY cramped - very crowded. I kept knocking into shelves and stuff. Kind of wish there were more spaces to sit and browse, relax, read - it's more of a get what you want and get out kind of vibe. Plus, I found it kind of hard to find things I was looking for. Several authors I follow I couldn't find in their sections. Maybe they have a different niche than what I'm typically drawn to - but there was a nice selection of books in the kids section including a decent showing in teen fiction. Staff was super friendly. Oh, and there was no bathroom. Part of why we had to leave is my little one needed to go, so we had to cut our browsing time short.
