The space is a reclaimed TTC barn and has five 'barns' each labeled with giant steel numbers. First is the artist live-work space, 2 is the event space where you will find the market on Saturdays in the winter and various other community events, 3 is the community theatre, 4 is The Stop greenhouse and kitchen, and 5 is the open air barn. There is also a children's playground on the east side of the building, an open field that becomes an ice rink in the winter on the south end, an off-leash dog park at the south-west corner, beach volleyball court on the west side, and plenty of benches and picnic tables scattered throughout. Some additional notes: ** The Market ** During the cold months it is indoors and runs 8 a.m. - noon. It gets crowded by 11 and goodies like cinnamon buns don't last until then. Bring cash, your own bags and if you're really good, your own travel-mug for the wonderful Kurtis coffee. Interesting vendors include the venison guy, sweet potato man, Mennonite meat lady, knife sharpening guy, tofu dude, the fungi, and the freshwater fish people. In the warmer months it is outdoors and runs a bit later until 1 I think (it is still indoors as I write this so I'm not sure). The vendors are spread out over the walkways under their tents. Half the fun is stopping to chat with neighbours so check your usual Toronto sidewalk pace as you might get stuck behind a stroller and wagon jam. There are several vegetable vendors that also sell organic and heirloom variety seeds and seedlings in the spring. Too bad last summer was so cold and rainy - even so the purple tomatoes I planted were wonderful! ** The Dogpark ** It has weird hours and no commercial dog walkers are allowed. It is closed everyday between noon-3 p.m. and opens later in the morning on Sunday. I'll take a picture of the sign next time I'm there because it's confusing. There is a human + dog drinking fountain but the city doesn't turn on the water until mid-May so bring water for your pooches. Best doggy party times (as with most parks I'm sure) are from 5 - 7 p.m. There might be a morning party but I'm never up early enough to find out.

Visiting private art galleries can sometimes be intimidating when you are in no position to purchase. Browsing oftentimes feels intrusive. This was not the case at Twist Gallery. In addition to exhibiting art the large space can be booked for events. It is easy to see how the venue can be transformed by bringing in furniture and accessories for a variety of purposes. An interesting space that is charming without being formal. I was greeted and encouraged to take my time with the art which I greatly appreciated. It was a very nice showcase of locally based Toronto talent. Twist Gallery will definitely remain on my radar for art and as an event space to recommend to friends and associates. Once you enter the door opens into a wide space and you are welcomed by the gallery director. I particularly like this gallery because they are so heavily involved in community and arts education. The neighbourhood is ghetto...it's the equivalent to having a liquor store in the middle of Forest Hill. I got wind of a Chinese artist's exhibition, so I hopped on the street-car and away we go! The further East I travelled on Queen, the tighter I clinched onto my wallet. I got off at a part of town I've never been before, and when I found the gallery I was relieved. The Hangman Artist Gallery is a one&a-half level space of corner store sized floor space. The reception occupied a quarter of the first floor, and the second floor was storage. I was greeted by the friendly ladies behind the counter, and after I explained that I was here to videotape some of their exhibits, I was allowed to do so with no pressure. A humble real estate, but considering where it was in town it was a very calm environment. The brick walls complimented the artwork. It was nice This gallery often hosts social functions for opening exhibits, and from the photos it doesn't look too shabby. Some useless information for the gallery: It is apart of the Artist Network..whatever that is. There are plenty of brochures and postcards of upcoming events available at the gallery, the staff are happy to provide any assistance. Not much to say about such a simple venue. The art were selling anywhere from $700-2500 a piece. The artwork in particular I was viewing were traditional Chinese painting with folklore characters holding luxury retail brand items. The location was a bit hard to get to since we decided to take transit but that is only a minor issue. The real bright spot is the staff that work there. They are super friendly and very efficient. Nothing seemed like too much of an issue for them. You can tell they take a lot of pains to hire the right person for this type of job. The event was a cash bar and they were a bit slow to process people paying by tapping. This could easily be improved with today's technology options but this did not take away from the overall experience.

It was my first time being here and I was impressed with the venue and the service. The name, Parkview Manor, suggests something exotic or traditional, maybe like an old mansion. Instead, it was a rather plain looking grey building with a large parking lot, in the middle of an industrial area. It was clean and in good repair but really had no character to it. Stepping inside, however, told a different story altogether. The reception/bar area was a bit small and cramped, making it a little hard for all the guests to move around comfortably. The passed hors d'oeuvres were plentiful, with a decent variety but tasted a bit ordinary. The main banquet room, with the head table, dining tables, and dance floor, was very spacious and beautifully decorated, with intimate lighting. Our meal was very good, maybe even excellent! We started with soup and salad, both served tableside. The main course had a properly cooked piece of salmon, a very tender steak, potatoes, and veggies. Dessert was chocolate mousse tart and creme brulee, served alternately. Other than the dessert being a tad sweet for my taste, the food quality was good. Kudos to our server, who was very friendly, engaging, and efficient! Having worked at one of the top banquet facilities in the GTA for ten years, the food and service here was top notch! I was teetering into 3-star territory because of how unimpressed I was with the entree. So I'm thinking...meh, why bring down a decent venue over some overcooked steak? Parkview Manor, like every other banquet hall, has a fairly boring exterior, but the inside is clean and well-presented with your typical banquet hall decor and chandeliers. TONS of parking, which is an advantage of being in a bland commercial area. The building is split into two areas so it's highly possible there are multiple events happening at the same time. Food, of course, is the number 1 priority as a wedding guest. As stated up front, the entree was bad. Really bad. The filet mignon was tough like leftover meat from boiled stew. The chicken, already expected to be underwhelming at a banquet hall, was especially bland. I suppose that's the risk of a 2-meat plate. But everything else made up for it, I think. The antipasto was plentiful and delicious, especially the smoked salmon and the giant parmesan cheese wheel. The dessert was a wonderful creme brulee. The oysters at the oyster bar were fresh and shucked before your eyes. Even the sweets table had some tasty cakes. Servers were quick and unnoticeable, which is a mark of a good banquet hall server. You don't want plates clanging against each other during a speech. The bottom line is I had a wonderful time here as a guest; food, service, and coordination being a huge part of that. So I can live with a little chewy beef. If you are planning a wedding at a banquet hall, I wouldn't pass on this. I hear the guy that coordinates the venue is fantastic. (50/100) - 2018
