An industrial hostel is what I would call it. The place is huge…read more You have to pay for everything: breakfast, bed linens, towels. The hostel has no personal touch and is stripped of all personality. It feels sterile and cold; it's not a welcoming place. My favorite hostels are places where you get to meet and talk to other people travelling, in a safe and relaxed environment. This place is the opposite, and the sense of "temporary" is really breathing down your neck never letting you feel at home. The place has a big bar, paid coffee machines, an ATM, a big seating area (near the bar). But I don't really care about all of that. The place is just fine if you wanna have a place to sleep (which is what I needed), but comparing to other hostels - the experience is lacking, which why I give 3 stars.

This is the worst hostel I've ever been. Location…read moreThe hostel is very close to the central station but also in one of the most dangerous areas in Hamburg. One of the drug stations is close to the hostel. I stayed three nights in this Hostel. And the police was every day there. One night, the police hammered at every door in the hostel to search for someone without even having a warrant. Close to the hostel is a more expensive supermarket, called Real. The police was every day there, too. Facilities First hostel without a kitchen. The hostel offers a kitchen online, which was just opened for breakfast in the morning. And it is not for everyone to use. Breakfast cost 5 euro. The hostel has a coffe machine in the lobby, which cost 1,90 euro for a coffee. You have also to pay for bed facilities such as a duvet etc. you pay automatically 3,50 euro for bed facilities but when you enter the room there are free duvet etc on the bed. Furthermore, you have to pay a tax of 54 cent per day, which is also not included in the booking. The hostel has a bar with overpriced food. They warm up a small frozen Pizza and sell it for 5 euro. Rooms The cleaing servicve came 9 in the morning before check out and woke up everyone in the room. The heater was not working one night. and it was winter. The rooms are clean but full. The hostel has 8 floors but opens a female room just when the other two are totally full. The bed is very expensive for what you get. I paid around 14 to 15 euro for a bed in a female six bed dormitory. Guests Due to the location and maybe the bad reviews there are less tourists in this hostel. Most of the guests are foreign workers, who live in Germany or German residents, who have no home or travel. I was wondering why there are no international tourists in this hostel. Reception The service is as less as possible. To summarize, this hostel is just a money machine. Additional and hidden costs are not unusual in this hostel. Less service for high price. Would never stay here again.

But I got off the Berliner Tor underground train station elevator at street level for something else, and there I saw the words Mac City on the upstairs windows. So I decided to go in and up and see what it was like. There I met Mr Cheng at the consierge desk. He's very nice. He's part owner. The place had a family feel and looked good for handicapped and had a kitchen where some people use the equipment and some bring their own pot, blender and dish etc. I've stayed at Mac City in three different rooms, two stays. I can't say enough about them, except try it yourself if you're looking for low cost accommodations in Hamburg. Of course be aware, as maybe anyone is staying in such a reasonable place. I do definitely recommend this establishment, for youths, workers, families, students and anyone else who wants easy transportation, easy access to shopping etc. They have parking behind the building too, with an entrance directly into their building (of course there's a fee to park but this is a major city so you're very lucky to be able to park by your place). A couple of their rooms also have a mini-fridge, so see if that's available, if you don't want to come out of the room to eat or you need to chill medication or your jar of bee pollen etc. The mattresses are nice, as are the pillows and quilts, the bedsheets are crisp and clean (and don't smell like detergent nor any other smell), radiators not a speck of dust, clean thick dark curtains in the rooms' windows, windows open nicely for the breeze and don't you even think of smoking! As they will charge you a 200,00EUR fine for one puff! I like that. I like places that smell deeply clean. And if you want to keep something super safe, everyone gets there own keyed locker to use, return the key the day you check out. Sorry no pics, as i'm writing from the room, using my laptop. The only cam I have with me is a little difficult (I'm used to and miss my mobile phone). Maybe i'll buy another at Media Markt Hamburg, it's nearby and sells you what you need, you can even use your PayPal card.

Also, I've been to a number of hostels in Europe through the past 6 years, and this was the only one that allowed me to tell you this litte story: we left our Go Pro batteries charging during an afternoon, and we left the hostel to go on the city tours and attractions we planned to go. Hostel staff came to clean the room, and removed the charger from the plug! So, when we've arrived back, the charger was out of the plug, and the batteries were not sufficiently charged at all. This was simply ridiculous coming from the hostel staff. If this is the kind of measure they take to save money, I'm pretty sure this already tells any of you about what to expect from the rest of this low end hostel.

Oh Gush! If i knew…read morethis before. My God this Hotel was catastrophic. This never happen to me. horrible, worst and the most crazy in the story is, i have hear that someone was kill in this hotel. I was there and there is no privacy, you have to ring the door anytime you come in and always different face of people in the reception, who are asking you who you are were you are going to. You share a toilette with different people and that toilettes wasn´t clean at all... smelling all the time and you might need a lot of courage to jump into the shower. You have to pay 20 € deposit for the TV´s remote control. They say the check out is 11 am, but at 10 am the cleaning woman just open the door without prevent and say you are to get out... for me it was a bit barbar and hilarious... never made this kind experience before.... I prefer to keep this way, because i get sick when i´m thinking about the time i have spend there...

A…read morebit of backgroundI have been in literally the worst and dingiest hostels in North America and worked in a virtual slum tenement of a hostel for a year. So I know what a crappy hotel looks like, and in most cases, I even welcome it, because I can never fully relax in an upscale hotel, even if I can afford it. Around the internet you'll see reviews about Hotel Nord talking about the area it is in, which, admittedly, is full of drunks and prostitutes. This, for me, was about the most charming thing about the place, but again, as I said, I have seen enough to not be put off by such things. On our first night there, we bought some beers and sat at the Hansaplatz; it's not for people who worry about getting pick-pocketed but if you've spent some time in the rough parts of town you'd be fine. The hotel is located practically on top of Hauptbahnhof and is within walking distance of most things you need to see. Location-wise it is top, if you don't mind the ubiquitous hookers and African dudes standing around smoking and staring. My real beef with Hotel Nord comes down to two things: 1. The light in the toilet is one of those ones with a motion sensor attached and an extremely short timer, so if you don't wave your hands about every three seconds, the light will go out. 2. I don't know what sort of other people stay in this place, but they scream at each other in the hallway, smoke in the hallway, smoke in the toilet, slam doors at 6 in the morning, and clomp around on high heels while coughing like they were on their death bed. I never actually SAW any of them, but I heard them constantly any time we were in our room. Also, when a door opens practically anywhere in the building, our door catch rattled, which was startling especially in the middle of night or early morning when you think someone is trying to get into your room while you sleep. As a side note, the beds were really uncomfortable and both mornings I woke up feeling like I'd been run over by a truck. I sleep on a futon at home, so springs are no good for me anyway unless it is in a proper mattress. These were far from proper which in itself did not bother me at firstyou get what you pay forit was the waking up in utter pain that bothered me. I like a nice seedy hotel as much as the next person but I really could not relax here and will not be going back. The staff was nice enough, although making the reservation was a bit of a pain in the backside (we had to do it two or three times, and even then, they were not really sure what we wanted). We did not try the breakfast.
